Medical checkup for Chinese immigration

Looking for details on the required medical checkup for entry into China (Shanghai specifically)

I am travelling to Shanghai with my spouse in August and I\'m hoping to get more information on what the required \"medical checkup\" entails in order to get our residence permit. I\'ve asked the relocation agency that my company uses if I can have the checkup done at a Western expat medical centre and they said there is only one place where we can get it done, but it isn\'t an expat hospital.

I\'m a little leery about this checkup, for three reasons. I\'m hoping to get someone\'s insights to (hopefully!) allay some of these concerns...

1. How invasive is this checkup and what exactly does this entail?

2. I have asked if my wife can have hers done with a female doctor and they said you can\'t choose who conducts the checkup. How \"intimate\" is this checkup and is there a potential she could be put in an uncomfortable situation?

3. In Shanghai does the medical centre at least use Western-standard medical equipment and (assuming they need blood tests) clean needles?

If someone could shed some light and maybe share some of their experience (both men and women here) then hopefully I can feel a little better about this. I certainly don\'t want to be put in a situation where my wife and I feel uncomfortable or unsafe.

Thanks! Reply to this

Hi Olivier,
Been based in Shanghai for the past 5 years and if there is one thing you dont have to worry about it is really this medical check up...have done it three times already and to be very honest with you the only thing that they care about is HIV... so most important of all, you wont have problems to get your residence permit sorted out.
As regards to the facility itself, it is really clean, every single medical staff is wearing mask, needles (blood test) are obviously single use only and it definitly match the western standards :-)
Should not take more than an hour during which you will shortly meet with different doctors/ nurses: echography, torax scan, blood test, cardio, eyes/ ears check up & medical history write up if any,

Dont hesitate to let me know if you need more info,
Cheers,
Laetitia
