One week in Hong Kong

Where to stay, where to go.

We are an active senior couple, experienced travellers, who were going to split a week in mid August between Hong Kong and Taipei, and thanks to good forum advice, will now stay in Hong Kong. We do need some help: what area is most convenient for tourists, assuming a mid-priced hotel, how much time to give Macau, and what are the must see/must do thngs in Hong Kong. We know about the shopping, but it is not our greatest interest. Reply to this

Not to throw you back into confusion, and of course this is just my opinion, but personally I found a week in Hong Kong too long - I haven't been to Taipei so I can't comment on what that's like, but I didn't feel there were THAT many things to see and do in Hong Kong to make a week worthwhile - I too was not really into the shopping, which seems to be a big draw for people going there...
That said, I think a trip up to the Victoria Peak is good - you take a tram which goes up at a very sharp angle to get there! but it's fun, and the view at the top is really good.
The laser/light display down at the harbour happens at 8pm every evening - good views from either side, Hong Kong Island or Kow Loon.
And we had a really good time at the Po Lin (think that's what it's called!) buddhist monastery, where there is the famous huge seated Buddha - the monks also lay on very good food for tourists. And you can take a cable car back, about a 25 minute ride, which would have been spectacular, only on the day we did it, it was really foggy.
Like I said, just personal opinion of Hong Kong - some people love it. In any case, you'll be on holiday, so you'll have a good time! 😊 Reply to this

When I went to Macau, we spent a couple of days there looking through the museum and all, it's a very pleasant place to just walk around and everything is pretty much in one place. There are lots of places to see in Hong Kong it really depends on what you would like to see. Mt Victoria I think is a must, there are also other attractions like Ocean Park, and Temple Street. Hong Kong attractions has a list of attractions with maps that might be useful as well.

Hi
I'm a bit biased as we stay in Hong Kong but here goes.....
1. Get the MTR to Choi Hung, mini bus 1A to Sai Kung (Exit C from MTR), get a green taxi to take you to the very top of Chuk Yeung road - keep going until you see a radio mast. Now walk back down the hill into Sai Kung, visit the little Thai restaurant by the temple on the main street and finish with a dessert at Honeymoon Dessert on the Main Street.
2. Visit The Jade Market in Kansu Street (Jordan) and locate the lovely temple nearby. Barter like mad if you buy.
3. Visit The History Museum in Science Museum Road (TST). It's really well done and interesting.
4. Visit Sai Kung again and get one ogf the old ladies at the pier to take you out on their little Sampan for an hour. Again barter like mad!

Good luck!
