Singapore Air Question

Do all the seats on the plane (a 747-400) have electrical outlets to plug laptops and such into?

Flying Singapore Air from Los Angeles to Tokyo in July. Do all the seats on the plane (a 747-400) have electrical outlets to plug laptops and such into? I'll be sitting in Economy (the "way-in-the-back" Economy where I'll be shoveling coal into the furnace to keep the engines going). Thanks!

Also, does anyone have any tips for not going crazy on a 12 hour flight? And please don't say sleep haha. I can't. Reply to this

Hello Matt 😊

I dont know about the laptop question because I dont have one.

But yes, sleep is a good thing to do for the flight. Sometimes if I have an early morning flight I go out all night. Then I sleep for around 8 hours on a 12 hour flight.
Or computer games.
Or have your favourite type of book that you cant wait to read ready.

Hi Mell,

I'm going to try my best to get some sleep on the flight. Too bad my flight is an afternoon flight or I would seriously take your advice and not sleep the night before. Maybe I'll pop a couple sleep pills with my Bailey's and Coffee before my flight (my ritual pre-flight drink; not a Bloody Mary guy). Just kidding about the pills. Fortunately, Singapore Air has a pretty nice in-flight entertainment system so that should keep me busy for about.....4 hours haha.

Have you ever flown Virgin Atlantic? I flew them last year from New York to London and it was amazing. Awesome in-flight entertainment with brand new movies and songs and the food was really good. I'm not very experienced with long-distance international travel so I don't know what other airlines spoil their passengers, but Virgin was a great experience. Reply to this

Hi Matt. I've never known a plane to have electrical outlets for laptops or any other appliance - not in Economy, at least. I've always had to use the battery. Many of them won't even let you use a laptop while the plane is airborne. It's about 5 years since I last flew so maybe things have changed.

Interactive in-flight entertainment which lets you pick movies, music and games is a fairly new thing in economy. Basically, the newer the plane, the bigger chance of you getting lucky. For long haul, later generation 747s and Airbus A330/340s are generally a safe bet (it of course also depends on the type of airline). I'm also one of those poor bastards who has trouble sleeping on planes even though I noticed that if I tanked up on wine (which I normally don't touch) it would help me doze off a bit. My favourite sleeping position is to stack pillows on the tray and slouch forward. Not particularily comfortable and it won't work for tall people but it is the only way I ever manage to get some sleep onboard. I prefer daytime flights, unfortunately most Europe to Asia routes are nightflights. Sure, the biznizmen in first will probably arrive relaxed but I always stagger out of economy like a zombie, and to set foot on the ground early morning knowing you're supposed to stay awake for another day is not too uplifting. Daytime flights on the other hand allow you to go to straight to your hotel bed with a clean conscience...

Talking about laptops, they only thing I know is that some European airlines are experimenting with onboard wifi, mainly on the U.S. routes I think, but I've never heard that they'd supply any electricity. Reply to this

Good move to choose Bailey's and coffee instead of Bloody Marys. I dont know why anyone would want to drink those.

I have never flown Virgin Atlantic. I found the in flight service on Quatar very good the few times I flew with them last year. I think airline in flight service is imporving in general. I heard a few people recently say the service they got on a long haul flights was excellent.

Speaking of airlines spoiling their passangers, I think Ryanair wins. :D
Ryanair trans Atlantic flights

I think these days passangers can use their laptops during the flight but not during take off and landing. Reply to this

I have heard Qantas is absolutely amazing. I think I actually read its the top-rated airline in the world.....of course if RyanAir follows through on their word, I think it might take over as #1 haha. At least among male travelers.

I'm curious if anyone has been able to persuade the ticket-counter person to upgrade them to a better seat for free, like from Economy to Business Class? I've always wondered if I could slip the person at the counter a $50 or $100 bill and they would upgrade me. Reply to this

Yes sure, try checking in at Tashkent airport, where they might even go as far as suggest it to you out of the blue. "You know, the seats are much more comfortable in business" *nudge* *nudge*

I expect it can be done in many of the ol' Soviet satellites where greasing the wheels is more or less an accepted art form, I wouldn't bother checking anywhere in the "civilized" world though. What you can do though, if you want to play a game of Russian roulette, is check in really late; chances are the flight is overbooked and you can get bumped into business or first, or (more likely) onto the next flight or just miss the flight entirely... One time I was put in the first class because somebody else was sitting in my seat in the economy. I think it just happens sometimes. I dont think you can bribe the staff to do it.

Now that I think about it, Johan may be right. Bribing may be possible in some countries. :D I never tried it. 😉

Hi Matt,

I have flied with Singapore airlines San Francisco to Mumbai. Atleast a year back, they didn't have electric outlets (although along with Korean air, they advertise that some of the seats have one!). However, I must say, Singapore Air's in-flight entertainment system is really really good... soooo many movies and programs right at your seat.. and food is relatively good too!
