Hi there - I'm going to be in Sydney over xmas and new year and I'm just wondering where the best hostel to stay is? I'm a 35 yr old female, fun loving and am travelling on my own so want to be somewhere with a great atmosphere so I don't feel homesick. Want to be fairly central too. I've looked at a few hostels and they are booked up already and the ones that are left are US51/GBP25 a night - is that the normal price over the xmas period? Are there any hostels I should avoid aswell?
Thanks!

Reply to this Hi Claire,
Welcome to TravelBlog.
My advice would be to find a place that looks suitable, at a price you think is ok, and book it asap. Sydney is probably the most popular place to be in Australia for New Years celebrations.
A lot of hostels don't even accept reservations over this time.
Reply to this im gonna be booking the YHA central square but cant do it until the end of this month, fingers crossed ill get a space. Have a nosey on www.yha.com.au and see what ya like.
Reply to this I'd agree with Jo - places get booked up so early in sydney (as you've found already), it's probably best to just find somewhere decent enough, it will probably be a bit more than you'll be paying at other times - if you wait around to see if you can get squeezed in cheaper elsewhere, you might miss the boat altogether. Why don't you try Y on the Park - it's the YWCA in Sydney and caters for backpackers so there should be other like-minded people around you (sorry didn't paste the link, but google it and it'll come up) - I just had a quick look on the website and they seem to have space available over xmas and new year - rate is coming up as 42 euro.
Reply to this Sydney Central and Sydney Railway square YHA are just getting to the stage now on the booking system where you can book xmas and new year. ive just got myself into Sydney Beachhouse just out of the centre but most have a minimum of 7 nights as well to take into consideration. Im only stopping for 5 but had to pay for 7 - £20 per night.
Reply to this Not that I want to be the girl who leaves the "negative" post but I don't recommend The Jollyswagman in Kings Cross. Best avoided if you want a happy time in Sydney!
On a happier note, Sydney for new years is AWESOME!! You will have a ball, try to get onto the water on a boat of some form!! The fireworks are amazing from the harbour & you don't have to face the millions of people on the banks while you are partying!
:-)
Reply to this thanks guys for the tips!
Mike/Sarah - have just been reading your blog - it's great. I've saved it to my favourites and am going to have a good read later. I'm off mid July on a 9 month RTW trip and my first stop is the west coast USA for 6 weeks then onto South America for a GAP tour aswell - the Altiplano which is 31 days in Peru/Bolivia and Chile. I'm also doing Machu Picchu - although I'm a bit nervous about the altitude sickness. It seems it's a lottery if you get it bad or not, despite fitness! Maybe I will take an oxygen cylinder with me?! Enjoy the rest of your travels!

Reply to this Sydney Central is amazing! It's expensive by hostel standards, but totally worth it!!
