San Pedro de Atacama, hot spot for the driest desert in the world. I arrived in the morning of January 29, and was fortunate enough to meet up with three great people. First, I met an American couple, Chris and Jess, who are professional climbers here in South America for three months, climbing rock and ice. Maniacs. But very cool. We then met up with Rachel, an English astronomer (she hates when I tell people) who has been working in La Serena, Chile, but is moving to Hawaii this coming Tuesday. I don´t think I mentioned Rachel before, but I had seen her twice. When I was on my two day tour to NP Lauca, I saw her riding her bike through the mountains with the intention of crossing into Bolivia. Turned out the altitide and ... read more

GALAPAGOS BACK TO ECUADOR After our visit to Galapagos, we were to meet the Crystal Serenity at Lima in Peru, the next country south of Ecuador. But first we had to detour back through Ecuador to get there. This was a long trip, beginning with the obligatory boat and plane trips from Galapagos to the Ecuador mainland. The scoop among our group was that Ecuador is willing to donate the Galapagos Islands for research and conservation, but any air travel to and from the Galapagos Islands must first pass through the airport at Guayaquil on the Ecuador mainland, where many tourist dollars are collected from Galapagos-bound tourists. From Guayaquil we were finally permitted to take another flight to Lima on the Peruvian coast, where our ship awaited us at the port of Callao, 45 minutes away ... read more

I hate to always do this, but Bariloche brought me back to the land of “this reminds me of…”, since nothing in Patagonia had reminded me of anything, not even Alaska, I guess I couldn’t help myself. But Bariloche is like Lake Tahoe. It’s a charming, expensive, ritzy town on a beautiful lake surrounded by mountains and ski resorts. Anyway, I cut this from an email to Martha to describe my primary adventure in Bariloche: ...Martha, I might have your missing the bus tale topped. get this. so you told me there was this easy breezy hike up at Cerro Catedral, right? so i tried to book a tour, but all were booked so I just caught the bus (btw, the weather has been AWESOME, so who minded walking around town to catch the bus) I ... read more

COLOMBIA Hola folks! Bit late sending this one...sorry they´re all so long but it will give you a good time wasting opportunity at work to read it all!...those of you that sit and surf all day anyway..Willis and Wren, not thinking of you in particular! Crossed the border to Colombia this morning at 6/7am...remember to wind that watch back 1 hr! Was a bit worried about all the searches and drug planting tales I have heard and thought they might mistake my emergency tooth filler for crack but no need to worry...was not searched or stopped even once, only had to present docs at the official immigration places and that´s it! Got bus Ven/Unitransco from Maracaibo this morning. Was told you can only book a seat direct from Caracas so had to turn up at 4.00am ... read more

The journey from La Paz to Brazil was taken on the Death Train, named such because of the fate of anyone who tried to ride the journey on the roof for free. The journey was 15 hours long starting at Santa Cruz at 5pm and arriving at Quijarro at 10am the following morning. At 4.55 the train was still quite empty which puzzled us as we had not been able to get seats together. At 4.57 there was suddenly a mad panic as the rest of the passengers boarded the train - now it was full. We asked a man if we could change seats which started a swap-shop as many other people in our carriage were not seated next to their amigos. The train was quite luxurious with cama seats, air conditioning and plenty of ... read more

Woh! is all I can say about this city, it's really amaizing, lovely, wonderful. It's all I were looking for, safety... you can go for a walk at 12 pm and nobody is going to attack or robbed you. At first it was a bit difficult to get used to this place, because of the light, I came in December (That is the beginig of the summer here) and the day gets dark at 11:40 pm and appears at 3:30 am really unbeliable. About the people, is very polite and nice, something I realized is that there's no poor people and homeless people, that's quite good. The city is no big (40.000 inhabitants), it's colourful, lovely with an interesting history and an amaizing nature. Other thin I noticed is that there's so many people from ... read more

Well our time in Bolivia is finally coming to an end, as we hope to have our Brazilian visas and be heading towards the boarder tonight. Up to this point, I would have to say that Bolivia has been my favourite country for many reasons including the food, the costs, and the people. Some highlights include learning that Jordan has the power to stop rain from falling by blowing towards the sky (according to our guide in Tupiza) and learning that yes, in fact, I am a Latino. At least the mafioso guy in Santa Cruz was convinced. They told him I was from Mexico, and from there on out my nickname was Chihuahua. Food: The number of awesome, cheap restaurants we found in Bolivia was simply amazing. Yes, two of the restaurants don´t necessarily serve ... read more

As usual I wasn’t very lucky with my flight across the ocean. This time it was the weather in Frankfurt that put an end to my dreams of the Chilean sun. As we were about to go down in Frankfurt we were informed that that they had closed the airport due to snow that had to be cleared away from the landing ground. After a while of circling around the plane was redirected to Cologne - less than half an hour away. Landing in Cologne I couldn’t even see the slightest snow flake, and did all of a sudden feel very cheated. As we were waiting for the plane to reful and take us back to Frankfurt, hopefully just in time for the connecting flights, we were informed that the plane was needed somewhere else. So ... read more

Well I think my last entry was on Saturday. I was not feeling so great so I went to the mall to get a present for the Birthday party that night. There is aircon there. Brought Just chocolates, but it was still appreciated. That night after a nap, yes a cesta we headed out for the evening. The party was a small dinner sort of gathering that only involved a very few people. The party was at Suzanna{s apartment in Neavo Cordoda. It was a pretty nice place and had about as much room as my house does. the evalator only went to one floor with one door. The appartment was the whole floor of this building. Acoording to suzanna each floor had a theme, strange but true her appartment was the Asian edition. It had ... read more

South America » Bolivia » Santa Cruz Department » Santa Cruz February 1st 2006

First of all, Can´t believe today is February, just looked at the date and was surprised. As everyone knows, we are in Santa Cruz for the second time, chilling for a few days until our VISA´s for Brazil arrive, they should be ready in 2 hours if all goes according to plan! Last night we tied one on for Ryans birthday! Started things off right with Champagne and Fillet Mignon for breakfast, then we went to the Internet cafe call center so Jord could phone the FOX in Vancouver, was pretty funny, I had it on the live web cast (although it did cut out at the end -reliable Bolivian Internet) but thanks to Tara we have an mp3 of the whole thing, which I will try and post a link to on this blog when ... read more
