Our ship’s time finally changed last night—back one hour! We are now on central time and are at sea for the first of five days. We will only be cruising by Pitcairn Island, not stopping.

The distance between Easter Island and Pitcairn Island is 1123 nautical miles. We are now on a course headed straight toward Pitcairn Island. We will sail about 415 miles today, through this remote area of the Pacific Ocean. This ocean makes up about 1/3 of the Earth’s surface making it the largest body of water in the world! The average depth of the ocean is 14,000 feet (4,300 meters). See if you can find us on the map and the depth of the waters we are traveling through! The Pacific Ocean claimed its namesake from the Latin name Mare Pacificum (peaceful sea). This name was bestowed upon it by the famous Portuguese Explorer, Ferdinand Magellan. For most of his travels he found this ocean as peaceful as are we are finding it; but this is not always the case! The islands in Pacific Ocean face natural disasters on a daily basis. Many cyclones and tsunamis have devastated islands and destroyed many towns.

Wow! What an experience. Easter Island sounds like a piece of magic way out in the Pacific. May you continue to experience the peaceful sea. Thanks for sharing. We are learning lots from afar.

Questions
Great to read your journal - Particularly about Pitcairn. I keep a record of all vessels calling at Pitcairn, and wonder if you would send me some data I need for "your" entry: Name of your vessel, her tonnage, Captain's name, port called at just prior to Pitcairn, port to be called at following Pitcairn. This, with perhaps a few words from your journal, will be going into the next edition of my book "Pitcairn - Port of Call" which is a running account of every ship that has called at Pitcairn from 1790 to 1990. The new editon will add to those years to date. Thanks for your help as possible. Herbert Ford, hford@puc.edu. Fax: 707-965-6504.
