Curaçao, Dutch Antilles Tuesday, April 16, 2013 Arrived at 8, enjoyed the sailing, lovely, colourful and prosperous A governor had migraines, decided that the whitewash was the reason for his problems and made a law that all the buildings had to be “not white”; imagine lovely Dutch buildings in pastel colours all different, lovely. Curacao is built on 2 sides of a small harbor with a floating pontoon moveable bridge. We are docked between these old and new sides within short walking distance of the pedestrian pontoon bridge. We walked the old side for an hour this morning, came home for a drink, I had to drown ¾ of a liter of lemon tea and wash some clothes: very hot. Terry is reading Shibumi for a little break( thank you MF). We are going back out ... read more

After making it to Panama with the Red Baron and confirming that the Darien Gap is, in fact, a real thing, the best option for getting to South America was to hop on a sailboat to Colombia. Me and Max had booked our spots on the Wildcard two months ago in Mexico and, excited for something a bit different, made the short drive from Pacific to Caribbean coasts, where we met up with our ship, crew, and fellow tourists for a five day sailing adventure through the San Blas islands to Cartagena, Colombia. The San Blas islands are a group of 350 or so small, white sand and palm tree covered islands, inhabited by the Kuna people, making up an autonomous province within Panama on the Carribean coast. I guess some years back they rose up ... read more

South America » Venezuela » Nueva Esparta » Isla de Margarita February 18th 2013

For our Carnival week, Erin, Allison, Dereek, and I headed to Margarita Island. Only a 3 hour ferry trip (if everything is working properly - needless to say, it was not) from the mainland, Margarita seemed almost like a different country. It was clean (the garbage was picked up), the taxi cabs were marked with actual signs and they all charged about the same rate, and there were a lot more imports - I actually saw Hersey's Kisses and a kind of cookie that I bought in Kosovo and was pretty sure was from Turkey. Needless to say, we loved it from the moment we got there. Add to that the fact that we were staying at an all-inclusive hotel on the beach and we were in heaven. Our plan was to do nothing but lounge ... read more

On Monday morning we left Merida with our guide Toto. It was going to take 2 days to reach the cattle ranch. On route we passed through several High Sierra Nevada Andes villages. At 3,900m we took a 3 hour hike to the Black Lake. We were heading for the Hato El Cedral ranch. A vast and remote cattle ranch in the middle of nowhere, run and owned by the government. This was the reason we came to Venezuela – it is one of the best places in the world for wildlife spoting including over 300 species of birds. Accommodation has gone downhill since we left Caracas. We stayed at an average posada (inn) in Merida. Our en route stop to the ranch was a new travel experience. We had to stop to collect the... read more

We arrived in Merida on Friday evening after a short flight from Caracas. Woke up on Saturday at 04.45. The lady in the next room was having a very loud orgasm. When she finished she had a chat with her partner and went back to sleep – as did I. Now that made me think. Was this episode the result of her partner booking through one of the main local tour agents – they are called Fanny Tours, or was it as a result of the 180 earth tremors a year they get in Merida. Our new guides Ramon and Toro informed us that Merida lies on a major fault line in the earth’s crust – a fact that our travel agent managed to omit. Merida town is a bit rough and ready. It’s bit like ... read more

Wednesday was a funny old day. In the hotel lobby for 5:00am for someone to take us to Havana Airport for a 9:00am Caracas flight. The airport is only 30 minutes away but the guide insisted on a pick up at 5. After two heated calls someone eventually shows up at just before 6. Getting out of Cuba is a laugh. It takes 2 hours to check in, pay departure tax, clear emigration, get past security etc. The national airline is broke so it runs old Russian made planes. My chair is broken, the toilets are disgusting and abysmal would praise the in-flight meal. But the plane does make it to Caracas. Met at the airport by our guide Ludwig. He tells us he’ll change our dollars to Bolivars. The official rate is $1= 4.07 Bolivars. ... read more

Day 443 Thursday 27th December Our alarm went off at 4.00am, which is just the most ridiculous time to start a day. Our flight isn’t till 7.30 but the woman at the hotel suggested we should take a 5.00am taxi to the airport, we both thought this was way too early but being a local we thought she knew best. We finalised our packing and got ourselves together just in time as our taxi arrived ten minutes early. The airport on Curacao is on the other side of the island but it was still only a twenty minute drive. The taxi drive once again cost us 70 guilders ($40), which is pretty steep but it got rid of some of that currency. Of course at 5.15am the airport wasn’t operating but there ... read more

Cabo de la Vela to Coro. Monday 17th Dec 2012. We left Maicao for the 12 km drive to the border at 9am via a Por Puesto ( very old ,fallen to pieces taxi car). They drop you off at the border and you go thrugh immigration to get your Colombian exit stamp. Then we walked about 50 metres to get our Venezuelan entry stamp. Meanwhile our taxi drove along side us. After getting our entry stamp we hopped into the taxi and together we drove through the checkpoint. That easy. This takes all of 30 min or less depending on the line up. Then we drove for 2.5 hours to Maracaibo, but don't put your passport away. 5 passport checks later arriving in Maracaibo. Here we got dropped off at the bus terminal and get ... read more
