Finally!! South America. Well, Caracas is'nt the friendliest place on earth. Just dont stare and don't acknoweledge people who won't to help you. Ha, find that pretty ironic. 12 hour layover here in the airport. Pretty boring. We leave again at 5:00 P.M. to get to Quito, Equador and that's our last stop. I will blog again when we get to Quito....... read more

When we enter Caracas we are welcomed by Hugo Chavez with a big smile on his face. It is a huge billboard strategically placed on a spot where the traffic tends to congest, so that you cannot come away without looking at it. Actually the billboard could be placed anywhere, because you hardly cannot find spots where there are no trafficjams. And indeed the billboards are everywhere. 'La Patria, la Revolucion o Muerte', we read. 'Welcome in Caracas' would be a bit friendlier. But we are not welcome, as we will experience during our two weeks stay here. It is even worse: we simply do not exist. It seems that no one exists here. Though we have met some friendly people, we have seen nowhere such a high density of asocial, intolerant and blunt people per ... read more

Just before I start... 2 little things. First of all, apologies for my disappearance and lack of blog over the last couple of weeks, but I've been a very busy bee. Secondly, this is very much a blog about being on the road, so I hope you don't find it too boring! When I left Coro at 9am on a Sunday morning, I knew I was in for a long ride... But first, let me explain a few things: Venezuela and Guyana are neighbouring countries. However, due to the geographic conditions and border disputes, going directly from one to the other by land is not really an option. The choices range from: - Going Venezuela to a selection of islands (Trinidad being one of them) by plane or ferry, followed by a flight from said island ... read more

Today was the day I was going from Colombia to Venezuela. I knew it was going to be a long trip, as I was aiming to get to the town of Coro, on the North West coast. My first task was to catch the bus from Riohacha to the border. The hotel owner explained how to get to the bus stop and I set off shortly after 7am for the 30 minutes walk. The bus was already there and it wasn't too long before we set off. The journey was taking me to Maicao, the nearest town to the border. From there, I shared a taxi with a retired German couple (I'd met them in the restaurant the night before and they were also going to Coro). The husband haggled spectacularly with the taxi driver, getting ... read more

Internet access in Venezuela has been sparse but here we go with my latest blog update and as ever, if you just want to look at the pics, here are the links: Part 1 - Angel Falls etc http://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.10150225978870236.348656.691995235&l=3c05252651 Part 2 - Catatambo, Los Llanos http://www.facebook.com/media/set/fbx/?set=a.10150235473160236.361771.691995235&l=b536f99a11 Victoria, Iguazu, Niagara……the world’s greatest waterfalls and I’m lucky enough to have seen them all. Only one has eluded me…. Angel Falls - the waterfall with the longest sheer drop on the planet; at 979 metres, a ribbon of water cascading down a vertical rock escarpment, deep in the heart of Venezuelan jungle, accessible only by boat... It did not disappoint. Packed and ready for 2 nights in hammocks in the exotically lush national park we were dropped at Ciudad Boliva... read more

I crossed another South American Border today and said ‘chau’ to Brazil and ‘buenos dias’ to Venezuela. I’m officially half way through the 70 day crossing of the continent and the past 2 weeks have been a delightful break from the ardours of travelling on Rosita, our Truck (someone call a chiropractor!). As you know, we sailed nearly 2000kms up the Amazon River and then from the state capital of Manaus headed deep into the Amazon Jungle for a few days. This was my second foray into the Amazon rainforest (hence the title of this blog update. Click here for my Ecuador experience back in 2009 http://www.travelblog.org/South-America/Ecuador/blog-518952.html). Given the sheer magnitude of the Amazon, this was a totally different experience to El Oriente in Ecuador over 2000kms away. The Amazon is the largest and most diverse ... read more

A slightly misleading title because this is really things I've learnt in Venezuela and Argentina but it isn't quite as catchy a title! Also apologies for those looking forward to this last week but was travelling and from now until May don't expect much as I have a wedding to prepare for then recover from! Venezuela hasn't changed much in 4 years...apart from Chavez's grafitti which is much bigger and shinier than before Banking isn't easy in Caracas...it took my friend over an hour to withdraw about 100 dollars in cash, from his own bank account, involving numerous phonecalls and emails to authorise himself to take out his own money. The Caribbean is always warm...even on a cloudy day I was loving the Caribbean Sea more than the air around me! I love seafood soup...had it ... read more

This morning we arrived in Isla Margarita, a small island which belongs to Venezuela. Together with its neighbouring island, Isla Margarita (means pearl) forms the state of Nueva Esparta or New Sparta. We took a small trip all around the island and drove along the beaches but also into the cities and through the wilderness in the center of the island. We visited a museum which showed us the history of the island itself, we went to a beautiful church which is a pilgrimage place and saw the oldest church on the Isla. We went up to La Galera, a spanish colonial fort and from there we could see all of La Ascuncion, the capital of the island. Later we visited the Santa Rosa Fortress where Luisa Caceres de Arismendi, a heroine of the Venezuelan War ... read more
