Leaving Ecuador behind we entered Peru at the town of Tumbes. The border crossing was pretty quick and easy, a few forms to be filled in, queue up at one desk to be stamped out of Ecuador, go to a second desk and hand your passport in to be stamped into Peru. Back on the truck it was another long and dusty drive through Peru to the coast. Straight away Peru felt different, louder, dustier, more of the South American chaos I’d been expecting but not really encountered in Ecuador. Punta Sal was the first stop, arriving at the campsite in the early afternoon we set up the tents under bamboo gazebos - using bricks to secure the tents as pegs and sand are not happy bed fellows – sand instantly fills the tent and all ... read more

Taking a break from Tumbes, we caught a minibus down to Mancora for two nights and three days. Mancora is a popular beach holiday town with a huge number of resorts and hostels and a large tourist turnover. Arriving, we caught a mototaxi towards our nominal destination, but the driver convinced us there were better places to go, as the one we had selected was too far removed from the beach. After checking out a couple of resorts that charged way too much, we arrived at El Refugio (the refuge) where the rate was more reasonable due to off season discounting, though still expensive by general Peru rates. So, for US$80 per day we got a bungalow next to the pool and beach, including breakfast and lunch. Best of all though, because we were here during ... read more

After out first night of bush camping with little to mention except the marsh mellows we had over the open fire we woke in the morning of the 18th November and headed to Punta Sal which was our honme for the next 3 nights and we were camping on the beach. After setting up our tents Stefano and myself headed into the water which was still kinda warm at 6pm and together with the rest of the group we watched a really nice sunset which made for a beautiful evening. That night we stayed in the bar on the beach and enjoyed a few beers with the group because we knew that day 2 was the party day... Day 2 and we all headed into Man to do a group shop and get some local currency. ... read more

Gestern fuhren wir dann ... read more

Up we go again: to Huaraz So onwards we drove from Lima and it was again another trip up to altitude to visit the city of Huaraz. The journey was pretty long and very bendy and unfortuantly it was raining and overcast so we didn´t get to appreciate much of the views either. We eventually arrive in Huaraz however to another cute little hotel where we got divided into our rooms and I was with two other girls but in a bedroom with five beds so we weren´t complaining! The hotel also had a tv room with lots of dvds which I made full use of especially as most of my time spent in this city involved me being ill with a stomach bug! The city itself has quite a lot to do for the adventurous ... read more

So after travelling for 6 months thru the caribbean, we decided to check out the beaches on the north side of the coast of our own country. We were born here in Piura, but never really lived there except for very often visits to our aunts and cousins during summers while growing up. We had a great time once we arrived to Punta Sal in Tumbes, this beach is just a few minutes away from the famous Máncora, but during the high season, the summer months from Dec. to Mar there is a great difference. No kids beggin, no risk of food poisoning (and I was born with a tough stomach!) and not having to freak out at the barbarity of ppl throwing plastic to the sand and water.... We stayed at a hostel very much like ... read more

Its been an interesting week since Banos (and if anyone noticed my facebook page, I wrote that "Matt is feeling pretty relaxed chilling out in Banos", however, banos means toilets in Spanish which is perhaps a bit too George Michael, so I've quickly changed that!). On our way to Cuenca, we stopped off at Ingapirca, the most important Inca site in Ecuador. It was pretty impressive and we had a wonderful guide who was on turbo, as she was trying to avoid the gathering thunderstorm (three years ago a German tourist was killed by a bolt of lighting whilst standing on the main monument). We spent a couple of days in Cuenca, a town full of colonial buildings, which was our last stop in Ecuador. It was pleasant enough but one of our party got mugged ... read more

Up early this morning for Steve, Ross and myself to go out on a fishing trip with one of the locals. The sea was so rough though that we all thought we might capsize at any time. Once we got further out though, it calmed down and we got down to business. From memory, I think Ross caught 3 big ones and a small one, Steve caught 3 small ones, and I caught just the one medium sized one. However, I did catch possibly the biggest fish in the world at one point, but it bit the line in 2 and escaped before I could get it aboard. Ross also caught an eel, which the fisherman then proceeded to beat with a big stick on the basis that they have sharp teeth. So did David Bowie ... read more

Arrived at the Punta Sal beach resort yesterday at around 9, after suffering a puncture roughly 10 minutes after we left our hotel in Huanchaco. Our spare was also kaput after it blew on the drive to Lima, which could have left us up shit creek, were it not for another Dragoman truck which was following on behind. After a detour to a tyre yard, we got back on the road after about 2 hours, arriving at Punta Sal in our Halloween costumes to the general indifference of everyone there. The next morning saw scenes reminiscent of Saving Private Ryan (or at the least, Shaving Ryan's Privates). The other Dragoman group had turned up late last night. I hadn't mentioned this before, but they got off on the wrong foot with some of us, mostly because ... read more

On the way to Punta Sal we stopped at the Sapin museum. It contained all the artifacts found at an intact tomb. Grave robbers had already got to others in the same area. It was a fairly good museum in terms of content. Great pottery and gold and displays of how they were found in the grave, but nothing in english and it was really dark which made us feel dizzy and headachy. Not that fantastic. We arrived quite late in Punta Sal. While the others put up the tents on the beach with the crabs we upgraded to a second floor room overlooking the beach. The restaurant was on the sand. It was lovely to eat and drink lots of beer with your bare feet buried in the sand. Only the occasional crab tickled ... read more
