We left early on Saturday to catch the bus up to Cusco where we had a trek briefing at 7pm. We'd been promised a very nice looking bus which would take 6 hours to make the journey in complete comfort and through beautiful scenery... After an hour we stopped at a place called Juliaca to find more passengers for the trip and ended up waiting there for an hour with passengers shouting at the driver that they wanted to leave and complaining that we were going to be late. Juliaca is described in our guide book as a 'seedy place full of contraband'. And it turned out to be true. Around 20 people got on at this stop and we soon had enough passengers for the driver to decide that we could leave. Little did we ... read more

Titi for Peru and Caca for Bolivia Another border crossing, another passport stamp, another country and yet another currency to get our heads around! Like Copacabana, Puno lies on the shores of Lake Titicaca. But there the similarities end. Puno is a far bigger city, which doesn't depend so much on the tourist dollar, yet, perhaps paradoxically feels like more of a tourist trap. During the bus trip from Copacabana a representative from the company started trying to entice us and everyone else to stay in a company owned hostel in Puno. They offered a free transfer from the bus terminal so we thought why not. About 10 passengers got off in Puno while the rest continued to Cusco. Nearly all 10 of us went to this hostel, where we negotiated a room for 35 Soles ... read more

I arrived in Peru again yesterday morning. My goal was to go directly to Puno, but there were no direct buses, so I spend the night in Arequipa with the 3 people I had been traveling with for several days. It was a good break, and the ride to Puno this morning was not too bad. Just a little over 5 hours. I am really treating myself here... I have a single room with a private bathroom and cable TV for $12 a night. It's a nice break from hostel dorm rooms. I'll be here tonight and tomorrow night, then heading the next day for Cusco. Right when I arrived today I went on a tour of some ruins about 45 minutes from here. It was really nice, but I was really feeling the altitude. Driving ... read more

Puno sits on the shores of Lake Titicaca, the highest navigable lake in the world, and straddles both Peru and Bolivia. Supposedly, "Titi" means puma whilst "caca" effectively means to go to the toilet and there is a saying around here that its "Titi" in Peru and "caca" in Bolivia. However, having been to both we can definitely say its the other way round. Puno is a bit of a hole, dirty and polluted no-one even goes near the water unless they are in a boat. img= http://photos-a.ak.facebook.com/photos-ak-sf2p/v252/145/67/223401787/n223401787_6227208_1897.jpg center A big pile of ´caca´. Not to say we didn´t have a good time in Puno. We did a half day trip to the Uros Islands (the floating reed islands famous to the lake), which although interesting, can only really be described these days as floating souvenir ... read more

Sunday 23rd March Easter Sunday, started 7am with firecrackers in the city. Meant got up in plenty of time to shower/finish packing. Ummed and arred about heading to Jacq's for that breakfast I never had, but go for the hotel one instead. It takes a while and I'm champing at the bit to get to the internet shop to back up my photos on DVD. The one I checked yesterday isn't open, but the next one is even cheaper. Whilst she is making my DVDs I'm uploading photos to the blog - computer's a bit slow so don't complete yet, but soon. Head out 1040 to get back to hotel for 11am charter bus. Rod is practically dancing in the street to get me to hurry up as our bus driver's wife has just died in ... read more

After the upset caused by the guinea pig photo Darryl is only eating rice and fish from now on. We have been very busy seeing some amazing sights, the highlight was our 4 day trek along the Inca trail to the holy lost city of Machu Picchu. We survived every sort of weather that the Andes could throw at us whilst walking and camping with 14 other mad men and women. The whole experience was fantastic though. After our extensive hiking in previous weeks the trek and altitude was not too bad for us despite the weather. We chewed coca leaves and drank Chica beer to keep us going. The fermentation of Chicha is started by saliva on chewed corn but it tastes OK (Darryl had 2 pints). Penny's boots fell to bits on the first ... read more

Heading up the long hill to Puno, Peru After a fairly short and beautiful 6 hour bus ride from Arequipa, we arrived in Puno (elevation approx. 12,500 ft) and found a nice place to stay, the Hotel de Los Pinos. We sure do feel the affects of the altitude, but are managing quite well. Those few days in Arequipa did us right in the acclimatization factor, as well as the Diamox and tons of water. Still, those flights of stairs are challenging for us lowlanders. We arrived Puno at the perfect time, late after noon on Saturday admist the Festival Virgen de la Candelaria, which lasted essentially all night as far as we can tell. This was an unexpected treat and made our decision to skip the the Colca Canyon seem not so bad after all. ... read more

Summary in English: We crossed border between Bolivia and Peru by walk. We did not want to pay lots of money for tourist bus and this was more adventurous :) We headed to Puno, another city on lake Titicaca. Peru is very similar to Bolivia, but more expensive and more touristic as well. People are used to tourists and they are trying to sell you everything, offering goods all the time. It was not very comfortable for us. The biggest attraction of Puno is visiting islands on lake Titicaca. We wanted to save a day, so we decided just for a one day trip to the islands. We visited the Floating Islands. It is very interesting. People wanted to separate from others living on the continent. So they built these islands from the reed which grows ... read more
