Due to messing up the dates of our flight from Puerto Maldanado to Cusco, we ended up staying in this extremely humid rainforest town for two painful yet comical nights. Luckily, or so we thought, we ended up in a pretty nice lodge set on the river called Wasaii lodge. We were promised great views and best of all.... air conditioning!
Air conditioning was one of the first disasters we had. Our room we were steeply paying $60 per night for had air con, but it managed to conk out on our first night so we were literally sweltering in the morning as the heat quickly rose. Due to Puerto Maldanado having nothing to offer outside except aimlessly wandering the streets in unbearable heat, we knew we had to do something about this as we were planning to spend our time sat infront of the cable TV with the bliss of the cool air rather than brave the outside heat. It seemed cooler outside than in our room at this point funnily enough. The hotel gladly put us up in another room but this is where the real disasters started. They literally were piling up one by one.
Dad
sat down on one of the beds and the whole bed collapsed beneath him. Obviously I couldn't breathe I was laughing so hard, and so was he! Luckily there were three beds so I didn't have to seem like the nagging tourist and go back to reception yet again to ask for another room. But unbeknown to me at the time, I would have to do this yet again literally half an hour later. We left the room to pop into town and grab some food, to come back to find that we couldn't open the door with our key. Not only could we not open it, but the key had totally jammed itself in the lock! We called for one of the staff members who tried just as hard as us to get the key out only to find that it really wasn't budging. He called for his colleague, who would make up what I named the Peruvian duo of the Chuckle brothers, who helped him remove part of the door so we could get in the room. They then popped out to get a new lock to replace it, which took them literally half an hour to put
on and they didn't do such a good job either, the nails were sticking out all over the place. It really was very funny though, as they clearly didn't have a clue what they were doing, but did it with such grace it was sweet and endearing!
Then to top it off, the cable in this new room conked out a few times so our plan to occupy our time in this uninteresting town seemed in shatters! Luckily it came back so our night of american tv shows was back on track and I must say, it really was nice to just slob infront of the TV for two days after such a hectic 6 weeks!
Don't let this put you off Wasaii lodge though. We clearly just got the unlucky rooms, either that or we are just cursed! Luckily we were able to see the funny side of it, as could the staff! The best thing about this hotel though was the fact that they have a sloth living in their grounds. It is not a pet, it just has happened to call these grounds its home. We were lucky enough to spot him on the morning of our departure! I was stood literally a metre away from him as he extremely slowly worked his way around a coconut palm tree. He was incredibly adorable. Much smaller than the one I saw at Lake Sandoval. This in itself made up for the fact that the hotel was literally falling apart around us! That and the great views it has over the river Madre de Dios!
