Iquitos - Ron '....I was watching a pirahna swim along the edge of a straight razor......swimming back and forth, back and forth....' Adams! Patch Adams! Everyman wants a mission in his life. I was holed up in this god-forsaken town at the edge of the jungle...Pucallpa...waiting for mine, subsisting on platanos and guinea pig, just counting the days till i could get back into the midst of it all when the orders finally came! Sheeeeeeet! Adams! I was to be transported downriver to the edge of the known section of jungle in order to search him out. Sheeeeeet! He's pissed off a lot of the higher ups that they would go out of their way this much to get him! I boarded the old rusty tin can that was going to be 'home' for the next ... read more

Longing for some warm beach weather and a change of scenery we have changed our original route and made a sizeable detour into the Amazon in Leticia, Colombia; on the tri border with Brazil and Peru. From here we will head to the Caribbean coast and finally warm up. Leaving Paracas, the sky was still greyed out with the humid misty fog that had been with us since getting down to Sea Level. It was a 4 hour bus ride to Lima, the shortest bus trip in recent memory, and it wasn't long until we hit the outskirts of Peru's sprawling capital. We stayed in the suburb of Miaflores, Lima's most affluent area near the beach. Apart from housing Peru's elite, it is also gringo central with expensive hostels and restaurants aplenty. Despite being a bit ... read more

Wow! I almost dont know where to begin with this blog! I have done and seen so much scince I last wrote. I am right now sitting in Mancora a costal town on the very north coast of mancora enjoying a guilty beer and relaxing. But let me start from the start.... From Lima I had a very comfortable flight to Pucallpa. When I arrived I easily found an overpriced hostel, but late at night in a city I didnt know I decided to treat myself to some air conditioning. It was 7.30pm and I was sweating, the jungle heat was strong here! I had a restful night sleep and in the morning enjoyed a free omellete for breakest. I had checkout time of 1pm and wanted to get up early to try and organise my ... read more

Yurimaguas to Iquitos After a shorter than expected trip on the minibus (2.5 hrs) we arrived at Yurimaguas from Tarapoto, greeted by a number of motor taxi blokes plying for our business. The winner told us that there was a boat leaving for Iquitos tomorrow at mid-day so off we went. After a whirlwind 15 minutes we found ourselves booked on the Gilmer leaving the following day at 5.30pm, in a camarote (cabin) for S150 each. Spent the rest of the day watching some tough blokes heaving cargo on and off the boat. Sleeping was easier than expected despite the spiders, funny looking flies and our two cockroaches. Got a little cold in the night but apart from that all went well although Mrs P reckons her mattress could do with being a little bit thicker! ... read more

Day 262 Friday 29th June The room of our hotel in Tarapoto has windows opening into a light shaft and our window does not close properly and the air-conditioning cord comes through the window. This all would not seem a problem until someone turns the TV on full blast at 3.00am in the morning and then they proceed to have a loud discussion screaming over the TV noise. Every sound echoed up the light shaft but most you could sleep through but not this noise. To remedy the problem we turned on the air-conditioning which was louder than all that noise and at least had a constant sound one could not call it a hum, but at least being constant we went back to sleep. We slept till about 6.00am when someone started hacking up a ... read more

A life-long dream realized. I finally make it to the Amazon Rainforest and the mighty Amazon river. From the earlist days of watching Creature from the Black Lagoon where scientists were convinced that the earliest form of life appeared to reading in National Geographic magazine about this mysterious place that has gone largely unexplored for many years, I could experience it all from my base in Peru, by traveling to Iquitos by plane, just North of Lima. I love the idea of being able to enter the plane from the tarmack - is it called a tarmack? It's kind of a throwback to when traveling was an adventure, really classy, like the flight attendants of Peruvian Air. Wow. Anyway, it's only an hour and a half-long flight and seems to go quite quickly. I was met ... read more

Hola Todos! I have spent the last week in the Amazon rain forest. It was great! Although originally I had planned to go with my friend César, he couldn’t go at the last minute… But there’s nothing wrong with traveling alone. From what I have experienced, lots of people chose to travel that way (but not necessarily to the jungle, haha). The city I went to was called Iquitos. It is in one of the northern-most provinces of Peru and is adjacent to the Brazilian Amazon rain forest. Iquitos is the largest city in the world that had no land route; or in other words, you need to take a plane or boat to get there. Although the boat rides are dirt cheap, I chose to go by plane. The flight was only about an hour ... read more

After our amazingexperience of the Inca Trail we continued our trip to our last destination on Peru... Usually you say last but not least but in this case I´m afraid it was so. We arrived at the airpost and as soon as the door opened a guy called our names, he helped with our bags and then he escorted us out to our guide Luis. Luis had a friend with him, Marden and he said that he would join us on our expeditions in the Peruvian jungle. And why not, the more the merier... We went to our hotel for the night and in the morning this friend of our guide came to take us to Belen floating Market. The place smelled very bad. We had to breathe through our mouth but the smell was normal bearing ... read more
