Suzanne here... Landing at Lima was an experiance. It was the middle of the night, and the city was lit up as far as they eye could see. At this point it dawned on me just how absolutely vast Lima is. We arrived at 1.30am. I'd wanted to save some money by hanging around the airport until morning. But David was keen to book a hotel. Given that we only had four nights / three days in Lima I did see the sense in not spending the first day grubby and exhausted. So we booked a hotel, and also their airport transfer service to avoid searching for a taxi in the middle of the night. Once we'd got through security there was Luis waiting for us with my name on a sign. It was nice to ... read more

So Lima has been delicious so far. The flavors in the ceviche are very special, it must be the peppers. The small ceviche restaurants always think I will start with ceviche and then have “segundo”. I have to make sure I say Solo or I get a huge plate of rice and meat. I learned this the hard way. A few older ladies didn't believe this was all I wanted, their faces reflected mild sympathy for my obvious mental disorder. Also, I am now in love with Lomo Saltado, beef and peppers in a succulent brown sauce served with rice and french fries, I know. Oh and the sandutches, pretty crazy sandwiches that always seem to include avocado. I went to the art museum here (MALI) and fell in love with a couple of the modern ... read more

Damn I love this this place! To my friends and family........you know I'm here for two months with an open invitation to return. It seems a crazy, want to be dictator has been elected president of my country. He is creating chaos around the world and hasn't been sworn in yet. Something is happening I never thought possible. The loss of liberty and freedom is something I traveled abroad in the 60's to defend. I'm leaving Barbara to solve this problem. LOL Back to Peru! Now this place is a third world country with beauty, charm, danger, intrigue and a feeling you have to experience. Here in Miraflores it never rains and the climate is for the most part acceptable, never cold. From my last trip here, you can see pictures of Machu picchu, the Andes, ... read more

CHANGE OF FOCUS Visiting the Nazca Lines After diving Costa Rica, Panama, and Curacao, I headed overland to Lima, Peru. Friends and strangers who talk to me about my travels always ask if I have been to Machu Picchu. I have visited temples and sites of ancient peoples, and exactly because it is so popular with tourists, I had no strong urge to put Machu Picchu on my itinerary, but I finally decided to just use it as a stepping stone to Chile, where I planned to take a plane to Easter Island. I had a couple of great days in Lima. I stayed in a charming small hotel, Hostal Kon-Tiki. The concierge was helpful, kind, and interested in the American. While in Lima I found a spa and had a massage and a manicure. I ... read more

Wow! I've been here ten days, time is passing to fast. I've been stocking my groceries, cooking, site seeing, visiting friends. I returned to Ians for a full day of cooking. believe it or not, Peruvians don't have biscuits and gravy or Cajun food. So for breakfast I prepared biscuits, gravy, chorizo, eggs with sliced tomatoes and fruit salad. The only sausage I have found here is chorizo? Of course Ian, being from Ohio loved the breakfast but Veronica and her family couldn't understand why I would make bread like the buscuit and gravy, whats that? While cooking breakfast I put on a big pot of red beans to boil and did the prep for red beans and rice. I brought spices from home but had to use chirizo instead of andouille sausage, Left cooking all ... read more

It's great to be back in Peru! I left home December 31st, I flew out of Birmingham, Alabama on Delta with connections in Atlanta changing airlines in Mexico city to Avianca. Bad mistake, when making plans, I was assured my baggage would be transferred without incident in Mexico city, WRONG. Terminal 1 is currently the largest airport terminal in the Americas and the fourth largest in the world, with expansion in progress it will be the largest in the world. Here's the deal, baggage is taken off and you must retrieve and get to your next airline (if your traveling on same airline, they transfer). Not only do you have to claim your baggage, you must go through customs with all baggage in tow and go through security check points along the way. So, here I ... read more

Hello everyone!!! We finally made it! - we had an awful journey here with a very long stop over in São Paulo! Celebrated new year three times but slept through two of them. Finally landed to discover- my boots have got lost in transit! We really aren't having the best of starts lol! I can laugh about it now but obviously wasn't amused at the time! They'd also stolen my cable ties from my bag too! We got a taxi from the airport into Lima- that was an experience in itself!!! They make the m25 look tame, cars nearly crashing into each other with about 15 people in 1 car- mental! We arrived at the hostel in 1 piece thankfully, our hotelier took pitty on us and let us have our room early. I swear to ... read more

Stage one is complete and it is time to move on to the main event . I have really enjoyed my time here and recommend this place to anyone . I have seen quite a bit of Lima , unfortunately not the central area for any real exploration . Maybe this is good given several friend{s concern about safety issues . I did think I might go to the Church of Santa Rosa but was strongly advised not to . I do follow that kind of advise. I have really been impressed with the range of things to do and the kindness and the friendliness of the people I have encountered . Not sure when I will have access to a keyboard again but will write when I can . Hope all is well .... read more

Third time I have tried to write this... ether ate the first . I hit the wrong thing the second ...third time is a charm ....right....RIGHT ! As I was saying ..taking the city tour the first day was a good idea . I thought it would be a good over view and I could return and spend more time later in the week . Not going to happen . I tried to return to the city center today and it is all closed off for security reasons . There is an international conference being held here so the area around the Plaza Major is not assessible . It is good that I saw the amazing Palaces built for the govenor and the archbishop in 16 and 17 hundreds . The moorish style is apparent in ... read more
