Before I start writing I have to ask myself, Who is reading this? What can I say that will (A) not scare my parents and (B) not bore other people? Is this journal for me? Is it for my friends? Is it for the curious, anonymous traveller who happens to find it? I'll do my best to please everyone, but I may fail sometimes. Actually, I'm probably about to fail right now. I got lost yesterday. After my morning Spanish class, I hopped three wrong buses and walked about a mile in the wrong direction. I know that’s not the kind of thing my parents want to hear. They probably REALLY don’t want to hear that I loved every minute of it. If I didn’t have that annoying voice in my head saying ‘Don’t be stupid,’ ... read more

Well, here we are. 6 years of dreaming and planning and we´re in Peru at the start of what is certain to be an amazing journey. Day 0 Our flight was long and tiring. A brief stop in Madrid before a 12 hour jaunt across the atlantic, over the amazon and dropping over the Andes into the fog of Lima courtesy of Iberia. The flight presented nothing of note other than the dissapointing viewing position for the poor selection of inflight movies, my scalded right thigh from the kind stewardess who poured tea into my lap, couldn´t manage an apology or a napkin and my curious walk and stretch routine to the cockpit. When I say the fog of Lima I wasn´t joking. Passing it off as an occasional occurrance, we have today established that the ... read more

I arrived in Lima on the 4th of June ... the weather was cold and cloudy, the streets buzzy, the trafic to die in but my compagny was great! We spent four days in this capital and I took the time to let my body recover from the exhausted trip. During the day we took our time to visit some places, to get my yellow fever cab, to arrange the next bustrip and to cook the most delicious meals! More than 400 years ago, the Spanish conqueror ("conquistador") Francisco Pizarro named Lima the City of the Kings ("Ciudad de los Reyes"). Nowadays, that same city, which rose from the lands of the native chief Taulischusco, is a metropolis of over 7 million people Lima is, in my opinion, a nice and pretty clean capital with lot ... read more

Greetings from Perù! It´s a sunny day in Lima, which apparently is a rare occurance, so we´ll be a little brief! Lima is wonderful, a lot cleaner than we expected. It´s right on the coast, and yesterday we saw the ocean, among other things. It´s most always very hazy and cool here, which is why we got excited to open the curtains and see sun this morning. Even at night, though, the temperatures are mild. We were out in the center of Lima last night trying to find a sweater store and a restaurant and we heard loud reggaeton music playing, so we went over to investigate and found a huge rally for one of the presidential candidates, Alan Garcìa. Police were stationed around in riot gear, and streets were blocked, but the event was peaceful ... read more

I started my exhausted trip from India to Peru at the 1st of June in the night. I think I reached the record of the amount of flights in 48 hours.I will write them down just for the statistics ... First an 8 hours flight from Chennai to Frankfurt and from there another flight to Brussels. My dear Kristine was there to pick me up and to bring me to my parents. It was a really strange experience: cold, expensive, white people, too clean... but it was great to see my family and some of my best friends back. My mom had ordered a " welcome home" cake and she made her lovely spaghetti for us. Really, never will a spaghetti taste as great as it did at that day! I used the evening to share ... read more

Twice in one day... don´t worry, we won't be this frequent in the future, we´re trying to get some photos off the cameras! Today we wandered around on the beach and in the city. The beach was much better than expected. It was all pebbles and had incredibly loud waves, but in a good way. We ate two delicious meals today, and both of mine had eggs! :) Tomorrow we will catch a bus to Ica, further south. Anyway, here are some pictures! Love, Mariel and Ben... read more

----Please note that the photos in this entry are extremely poor. Our camera was being repaired and we used a disposable, which obviously had problems as well. I think they will do the job though, and it will give you a better idea of the poor lighting conditions that the doctors were working under....read on... During my pre-teenyears, I was what some would call...well...homely. (My parents just read that and gasped, as they believed that I was nothing but beautiful.) Well, okay then, I was a "beautiful" awkwardly tall, uncoordinated, ruddy-haired, moon-faced girl, with very, very bad teeth. Although my parents saw me as a mini- Miss America, they too were aware of the fact that my teeth were in dire need of attention, and at the tender age of ten, I began my stint with ... read more

So, the foreseen problems predicted by the ghastly check-in wench in Australia?? Non-Existent! I knew I had it all under control. The arrival gate at Lima airport was up to its usual best: crazy and chaotic- I barely noticed, there was only one face I was looking for- the crows of people were thick but there he was, like a butterfly among a sea of moths- flying into my arms; forgetting all about mum and dad being left to the perils of taxi drivers, hostel peddlers, trolley pushers. Juan Elvis Negrón Baca, Elvis to friends and family, my soon to be husband, quickly brought things to control in search for out transfer driver to the hotel- who, typically, had forgotten to pick us up. The trip to the hotel was uneventful- but reflected in my parents ... read more

Well, I´m still here! Just enjoying the partying too much, I guess. I have decided to go to Nazca after all though. I´d met so many people that were disappointed, but the one person I met who found it absolutely amazing and incredible and spectacular was enough to convince me it had to be done. So some time this week I´ll get on with that. Anyway, I had a look around the old centre here, which was very pleasant. A surprisingly long walk away though. And I had a blind date! One of the guys in the hostel, Seb, met a local gal the other night, and invited her to the cinema to see the Da Vinci code. She said her sister wanted to come too, so he´d need to find someone else to come. For ... read more

So...onwards to Peru´s capital city. We stayed pretty close to the Plaza de Armas in the centre of the city, but Lima is a massive place with almost 10 million inhabitants and many varied districts. Wandering round the main square, which includes the presidential palace, it was very reassuring to see a myriad of riot police equipped with shields and tear gas guns, and there was even a tank peering round the corner. Great. At the time, Peru was gearing up for the election run-off between Alan Garcia Perez (former president from 1985-90, his term characterised by hyperinflation, devaluation of the economy and resurgence of the Sendero Luminoso - Shining Path) and Ollanta Tasso (radical nationalist, who by all accounts is a bit of a nutcase...promises to release the Shining Path leader if elected etc.). So ... read more
