On Christmas Day...
...the LimeƱos head for the beach... And so did we! Two hours late to Lima from
Los Angeles, we finally arrived at our hostel in Barranco, Lima, by 2 am on X-mas Day. Barranco's Backpackers Inn can really be recommended: safe area/hostel with nice rooms and great breakfast. (we were fed even though we overslept by about an hour and a half the first morning!) Having wolfed down some lovely bread, hot chocolate and a banana we headed for the beach (5 minutes' walk, downhill) as it was really sunny, and besides, the whole town seemed to be down there as well... We only stayed for about an hour though, with pasty skin frying yourself 15 degrees south of the equator isn't a terrible good idea :/ Then we walked round the area for most of the day, before sitting down in a sunset-facing restaurant above the beach.
At 6.15 the following morning we were picked up by Alberto, who drove us to Waikiki Beach for some early morning surfing. Finally H got to try a longboard! The waves were just the right size, the water not too cold (even in a shortie), and Alberto was fantastic and gave us loads of encouraging comments about what we did wrong. (of course,
My name is Cookie!
This guy sat on a fence in Barranco. He chatted away like crazy until he was put on D's shoulder... we were fantastic, but still 😉 If anyone is looking for a surf (or fishing!) trip around Lima let us know and we'll pass on his contact details! Then back to the hostel for breakfast. Yum!
After breakfast we headed out again, and spotted a parrot called Cookie (or the Spanish equivalent) sitting on a fence talking loudly to himself. His owner sat him on Ds shoulder, but then he became quiet.
With some luck, and using our very poor Spanish, we managed to get on a bus that took us into the centre of Lima - and got off it at almost the right place as well - the bus drivers here talk very very fast but everyone did their best to help us out without us even asking! We walked round there for a bit looking at the beautiful architecture. However, we thought it wasn't too exciting otherwise so took another bus to Miraflores (the area next to Barranco, also by the sea). That was a lot nicer (and felt safer) and more tranquil than the centre, but not as laid-back as Barranco. Miraflores is a lot more tourist-oriented than Barranco, and we thought we'd picked

After dinner we headed back to the hostel as our flight to Cusco (
Qo'sqo: the navel of the world) left early next morning...
Tva timmar sena fran
Qo'sqo: the navel of the world) tidigt nasta morgon...
