05/04 - Nazca Lines We used Cruz del Sur for the 13 hours trip Cuzco - Nazca and it was the best bus company ever tested. Digital screen on board, internet and Facebook available when cell-phone signal was available, games, movies, like on a plane. We also had a diner (you have the choice between meat or vegetarian when you book your ticket), and a small breakfast which was welcome. The seats are larger and more comfortable than in any other bus company we have been using so far. They offer a little cushion and a cover for the night. Cemetery of Chauchilla: We took the tour with our hostel Brabant to visit the Cemetery of Chauchilla where mummies have been found only 50 years ago. The site has been racked by unrespectful people in search ... read more

I still wasn't having any luck finding a tour to the aqueducts or for the sand dunes. As I sat doing my research and combing through my guide books, the phone rang. The tour desk here at the hotel had 4 people confirmed for the dune buggy ride out to the sand dunes and would I like to go? Heck yeah I would! All I had to do was show up in the lobby at 2:30 with my sunglasses, hat, sun screen and a jacket for the ride home. Sign me up baby, I am going boarding down the sand dunes in the Peruvian desert, something I really wanted to do. Since I had several hours to kill, I decided to take the bull by the horns and just hire a dang taxi to take me ... read more

The overnight bus ride from Arequipa to Nazca was not nearly as bad as I had anticipated. The seats were comfortable and reclined. The bad part is that when the person in front of me reclined all the way back, it crunched my knees so much that I couldn't sit with my knees forward. I used positions such as hanging over the armrest into the aisle, or propping my foot on the back of his armrest. One thing I thought was odd was that the driver videotaped each passenger while saying what seat number that person was in. I have no idea what that was all about. We left Arequipa at 9:30 and arrived in Nazca around 7. Although I was not able to check into the hotel until 2, they let me stash my luggage ... read more

Of laat ek dit so stel. Ek het dit alles gesien. Karein het dit gemaak tot by die spider, daarna was dit sy en George!! Die co-pilot het haar 'n watta gegee met chloroform of iets op om dit beter te maak, maar die het haar net weer vir George ... read more

When I initially suggested visiting Nazca to Nikki she said “But what’s there?” I showed her pictures of the Nazca lines and she said “Is that it?” IS THAT IT!!! I have been amazed by the Nazca lines for years and she says “Is that it?” as I wanted to see them so badly there was no way I was going to miss them out of my itinerary, I was going to show her how wrong she could be. When most men are in their late teens/early twenties there are three words they dread hearing from that special someone in their life. “I love you” As you grow older and mature (alot) there are four different words that you dread hearing from your wife/husband/significant other. Any ideas which four words I’m talking about? That’s right “I ... read more

Hey there!! so I've just done my flight over the Nazca Lines and even got another stamp in my passport from Nazca airport!! Once we'd seen all the lines, the pilot asked if we wanted to experience zero gravity...... erh yes....si por favour!! it was stomach turning but amazing to feel weightlessness for more time than on a rollercoaster!!! that and the g-forces in the tiny 6 seater plane left me a little light headed and sick afterwards but i was soon chugging coca tea and eating corn soup!! Me and my travel buddy Maddy had a most amusing conversation as to how they named all the lines. How did they know to call the astronaut such when he didn't exist, is it really an astronaut or a jelly baby?? Off for my first overnight coach ... read more

Well I didn´t do the flight! I started the morning off with "the boys" (Grant, Manny, Des, and Victor) to go and see the Nazca mummies at Chauchilla Cemetery. Not sure how safe the journey was - our speedometer didn´t work, but the car did overheat! The mummies are amazing. So many to see and so many burried yet (eventough grave robbers desecrated many tombs). All of them are burried in the fetal position so that they can be born again from mother earth. We also saw the lines! Well, in fact, I got to touch them! I was surprised that they aren´t actually "lines" in the traditional sense of the word. They are more like paths that have been scraped of the top layer of rock. The climate here has kept them intact for this ... read more

Day 285 Sunday 22nd July After a slight confusion because our names were not on the breakfast list, we enjoyed are last morning in Hauachina before packing. We left the hotel at 10.15am to go to the bus terminal we arrived way too early but that was OK and we checked our bags in and just read while we waited for our 11.30am bus to Nazca. At 11.30am a bus to Arequipa was announced and the people asked to board and we thought maybe it was ours, but were told no about another 5 minutes. Well our bus arrived at 12.00 and we were on the road soon after, this delay was a precursor to our stay in Nazca. The bus trip is only short and we arrived in Nazca about 2.00pm and walked the couple ... read more

Moved on from Huacachina after yet another wander around the lake. Hung around for those that sand buggied to return and have breakfast and showers and left around 9.30 am. Drove to a local market in Ica. The route was a little circuitous due to the recent earthquake which had broken a few sewers. Wasn´t us that blocked the toilets this time!! Shopped in groups of 4/5 to buy food for two to three meals over the next couple of days. Ed and I were in separate groups. It is really hard to calculate the precise quantities when cooking for 20 with a certain amount to spend (which came from the communal kitty). My knowledge of Spanish vocabulary is improving daily but Ed can still only say his name...... which is not particularly useful at the ... read more

They may be just lines in the sand, but lines that are believed to be 1,500 Years old and completely mystifying. The Nazca Lines are more than drawings that you need to fly over at 2,500ft to make them out. They are enigmatic art using the desert floor as a canvas creating one of the largest art gallery in the world high on the Nazca Plateau. They end up leaving you with more questions than answers. After leaving Cusco, it was the mad dash to the finish of my travels. I took a 14hr overnight bus ride from Cusco, Peru to Nazca Peru to see the mysterious Nazca Lines. I have to say this overnight bus ride was luxury compared to my other experiences. It had Wi-Fi and I actually slept. Although the fact that I ... read more
