Hi Folks, Today was a bit more leisurely with the opportunity to do a few more touristy type things. Today was a trip to the Ballestas Islands just off Paracas on the coast of the Pacific. If you remember, I was also there back in 2005 with Pancho and the CCS crowd. It was a very different Paracas that I saw this time around. As a result of the earthquake that hit Peru in August last year, a huge Tsunami wave came from the Pacific and hit Paracas. The nice area where we had a lovely evening meal back in 2005 is gone, and the main hotel on the beach virtually destroyed. They are in the middle of reconstruction work there. I have attached some photos to let you see. The speed boats are still running ... read more

Hola Gringo´s Sorry its been a while but i´ve been ridiculously busy!! So this is kinda gonna be a bit condensed compared to my usual efforts! So we met up with the rest of our tour group last Wednesday and straight from the off its been busy, on the meet and greet night I tried roast Goat...tastes a bit like lamb and not chicken...makes a change eh! On the first full day of the tour first stop was the Ballestas Islands, home to dozens of species of birds including Penguins and Cormorants oh and plenty of seals too! After we finished our tour round there it was off to the Atacama Desert for a spot of sandboarding and sleeping under the stars! To get there we had an awesome dune buggy ride, then on with the ... read more

Today was another day of wonderment and fun here in South America. Starting off at the small village of Paracas, we boarded a speed boat to head out to the Isla Ballestas. These islands are essentially towers of rock that surge from the ocean and are home to thousands of animals, all of different types and species. Many types of birds, sea lions and penguins call these islands home and the volume of life present here is awe inspiring - I didn´t think any other nature experience would come close to the Galapagos, but this certainly did. After a couple of hours cruising, we headed back and set off for the region of Ica. The change in climate and topography was obvious as we left the coast and headed inland. Upon reaching the oasis of Huacachina ... read more

...though thankfully there are no actual médicos in this installment. So, Thursday morning I hopped a bus to Ica and from there a quick (and cheap) taxi to Huacachina. Huacachina is a very small town, literally an oasis in the middle of these crazy-high sand dunes. I had every intention of going there to sand board. I had been reading about it for months and was dying to try it, but it was not to be, and that’s okay. This town is so mellow, it was actually a big change for me coming from cities and big towns. The silence was kind of shocking. There was lots of hippy-like restaurants and everyone was just lazing around in hammocks reading and journaling. There was also some really unbelievable jewelry for super cheap. I had promised myself that ... read more

Our tour guide Mel joked with us as we left the dock to look out for the boobies! Huh, nudist beach, no Peruvian booby birds, and thousands of them. The Ballestas Islands are home to a great variety of wildlife. There are huge colonies of sea lions and unusual marine birds, such as - Humboldt’s Penguin, cormorants, Peruvian booby and Peruvian pelican. The islands surrounding seas are rich in creel, and associated upper food chain fish. They provide a safe breeding ground for sea lions, pelicans and a large variety of bird life. The tour enabled the gang to get up close with much of the wildlife on the island. An astounding amount of birds and sea lions were seen all over the island. The locals take advantage of the bird droppings by collecting these twice ... read more

Hi Folks, Final update re the remainder of the weekend!! We stayed overnight in Paracas and got up early on Monday morning to take a trip to the Ballestas Islands, just of the coast of Paracas in the Pacific. We boarded a 25 person speed boat for the trip. The water was pretty choppy to say the least and the ride was a little rough. Caroline and I ended up absolutely soaked from the spray, but it was well worth it for what we saw. Key highlights were the penguins, the pelicans and the sea lions. I´ve never been so close to them in the wild and managed to get some great photos (well, I think they´re great!!). On the way back, a pelican flew in front of the bow of the boat and over the ... read more

We figure we should get out and do one final tourist attraction (the wineries don't really count do they?) so we visit Ballestas Islands - referred to in our guide books as the 'cheap mans Gallapagos Island'. What they fail to mention is the fact that the pelicans we see are not a new breed of black birds, but are drenched in oil from the polluted sea! Once I got over this, the trip was enjoyable enough, as we viewed colonies of sea lions and thousands of birds from a speedboat. The birds droppings being a key export to many countries including Australia (?) The National Park is spectacular. The arid desert is a stark contrast to the lush Andes - these varying landscapes are what I love so much about Peru! We visit a museum ... read more
