During the night I woke up at silly o´clock, my body still not used to the time difference and it was wonderful to hear the sound of the sea. Bardsey Island sighs lulled me back to sleep. Another early morning start saw us waiting to board the speed boat to the Ballestos Islands, home to resident birds and sealions. As we got nearer to the islands more birds started flying by and I honed in on them with my binoculars spotting what I thought were gannets, but actually turned out to be the famous fnar fnar boobies! I also saw pelicans, cormarants and terns. Eventually the white, guano covered islands came into view and we arrived to a carcophany of sound from the mass of birds clinging to the rocky outcrops. We saw 3 different types ... read more

Pisco and Ballestas Islands Huacachina to Pisco The 5 hour stretch of Pan-American highway between Ica and Lima is served by a very frequent, fast and well used bus service run by Soyuz/Peru bus. The fares are cheap and it makes travel so easy. This is a less used tourist route as most people skip out this stretch. After a short taxi ride from Huacachina we were at the bus station in Ica and within about15 minutes we had a ticket and were on our way to Pisco. The journey takes about an hour and you then get dropped at the turn off for the town where there are lots of taxis to take you the next 6 kms into the town centre. We headed straight to a hotel with a pool which was 7 pounds ... read more

¡Hola!

So . . . Today we had a trip planned to Paracas to see the famous Ballestas Islands which are renowned for their wildlife and can only be visited by boat. We had an early morning bus to catch from Lima to Paracas-Isla Ballestas at 4am which meant us only getting a few hours sleep in our hostel reception before our 3am pick. The bus journey headed south down the coast and was probably the most comfortable bus ride ever with big, reclining seats which pretty much went into beds. All tours start at 8am and as we were running a little late on the bus, we only just made it with our tour guide trying to make us run with our oversized bags to the pier. The speed boat was FREEZZZZZZZZING - The first site ... read more

From Huacachina, we took a tour to Las Islas Ballestas, which means the Bow Islands. The islands are part of a marine reserve off the coast of Paracas, Peru. The islands are a popular tourist spot because they are full of different marine birds, sea lions, penguins, and dolphins. We got to see all three while we were there. From the port, we took a speed boat out to the islands. People don't get off on the islands like at Isla de Plata. We stayed on the boat and took a tour through the islands by water. It was really cool to see all the birds, sea lions, and a small family of Humbolt penguins. Industrial fishing is illegal in the reserve, but local fisherman are permitted to do traditional fishing, including diving to gather octopus, ... read more

martes, 22 de junio An amazing breakfast bap and into Ica to catch the bus to Pisco. We know it's not far but not quite where to go. It's okay the conductor knows he has our ticket. Oh. No. He doesn't. That stop half an hour ago was ours. And he doesn't speak English? WHAT THE F**K IS HE SAYING??!! Literal translation (or what we did anyway): "Get off the bus on the middle of a busy highway right in the middle of the desert, then try and run across the road with 2.5 stone backpacks whilst cars belt past at 60mph on the side of the road you are otherwise unused to, after which try and communicate with the ticket auditor (who also doesn't speak a word of your mother tongue) and explain the situation ... read more

Sarah and I awoke at 3am (well, Sarah did thankfully, as my alarm clock was still on Honduras time and we would have missed our bus!) then were off on our nice bus to Paracas. It was about a 3.5 hours from Lima to Paracas. The bus left at 4am. The bus was a company called Cruz del Sol and has NICE reclining seats. Our tickets were S55 (aprox $20). This is probably the most expensive bus line but has great comfort. We slept most of the ride but when we woke up we awoke to desert! It was crazy. The ocean was on our right and the desert to our left. Very cool site. When we got to Paracas, we booked a tour over to the Ballestas Islands. We had heard great things about it. ... read more

We had to see Isla del Ballestas before we left Paracus, I had never seen a penguin in the wild before and was excited at the prospect so we booked our tour at 40 soles each and eagerly arrived at the marina early next morning, We waited as the boats lined up waiting for us to board, we paid a habour fee (2 soles each) and boarded our open speed boat put on our very sexy life jackets and off we sped. Just a little bit out of the harbor a half submerged submarine sat sporting a peruvian flag, I didn't know Peru had a navy never mind a submarine, then across the bay several large war ships sat docked, don't mess with these guys eh? 20 minutes later el Candelabro came into view, this is ... read more
