Hey all! I had an amazing weekend and I thought I´d share a little bit of it with you. In Qosqo, all Saturday long I went on a ¨market walk¨. A ¨market walk¨is what happens who one leaves the house of one´s host family with the intention of reaching Mercado San Pedro (a centralized maket in Qosqo), and runs into a market on nearly every block en route! Being a curious person, of course I had to at least stroll around these amazing places, which bumb up there presence all over Qosqo on Saturdays. The markets here are part dream-come true (fruits, vegetables, and cereals in bulk, herbs, loose-leaf teas, local plants, traditional medicines, etc.) and part nightmare (how many little plastic trinkets, or plastic-wrapped items do folks seriously need? That goes for you too, Americans!). ... read more

By Tuesday, December 8th, we had seen most of what Cusco and the Sacred Valley had to offer and were making plans to head on. However, we were uneasy about leaving. After anticipating Machu Picchu for so long, our brief afternoon after the grueling Inca Trail did not satisfy, and we were already making plans to come back in a future visit - possibly with parents or an anklebiter in tow. Talking through our plans that morning, we finally asked the obvious question: why not return to Machu Picchu now while we were still in the area? Just like that, we made plans to return to the Lost City within two days, and to stop by Pisac to see the Inca ruins there along the way. So the next morning, Dec. 9th, we took a bus ... read more

We left Nazca on Thursday, November 26th, the night of Thanksgiving. Little did we know that it would be a sleepless night. The bus takes 13-14 hours from Nazca to Cuzco. We had bought semi-cama seats (reclining seats) from the bus company Cial, but when we arrived at 8 pm that night, we were told that our bus was canceled, but we were being put onto another bus from a neighboring company into cama seats, seats that fully reclined to approximately 15 degree angles. The seats were very nice, large, cushiony, and reminded me of first class in an airplane. They even had an angled piece for your calves. It was nice and comfortable in the begining, until the bus started climbing and the altitude sickness started to set in. It wasn´t as bad at first ... read more

Hi everyone, Ve here again. Yesterday we went to the market in Pisac and bought a whole bunch of stuff. We (mainly I) ate a whole bunch of empanadas and deserts. We took the bus for the first time and it made me really nauseous. The roads were really bumpy and it seemed as though there was a speed bump everyone 1/2 a km. They weren´t your typical speedbumps as it felt like we ran over some form of massive wildlife. We are still getting by with minimal Spanish but sometimes we really don´t have much of a choice as the locales will beginning asking paragraph-long questions. We usually look at one another hoping that one of us would have recognized a verb and then we say NO ENTIENDO. Overall things are going pretty well. The ... read more

Cusco itself is crowded, overpriced and absolutely rammed full of tourists.... no wonder it is overpriced as the locals have cottoned on to the fact that the many rich americans that come here can pay much more than they're used to. Unfortunately this has led to more street hawking than I've seen anywhere else in both Ecuador and Peru. You can't walk two steps without being offered the same hats, paintings, wooden carvings, massages and many more things that I really do not need, yet the locals insist I do! Thus we havn't had the best time in Cusco, the only great place here in my view is the Real McCoy (an English pub) where we were able to sample real traditional English food, a little taste of home, even with English music in the background! ... read more

Peru - There and back Again Sunday 19th July 2009 - Pisac Market Today we headed off to the tourist market at Pisac. Via public transport. And amazingly we all managed to get on to the same bus at the bus station. The roads in this area of Peru managed to make the really poor road conditions of South Lananrkshire seem pretty good!! The market was busy and bustling, and on one of the corners was a woman and her children all dressed in national dress. Purely for us tourists with cameras, in the hope of receiving a few soles (pennies) in exchange for taking a photograph. Well I never!!!! It was the same woman and her children that had been in the exact same corner over 18 months previously. I could hardly believe my eyes. ... read more

... read more

We got up early and caught a dirt cheap local bus to Pisac to check out the ruins there. We were the only non-Peruvians on the bus. Some would say it was a bit sketchy, but it really wasnt. After about an hour we got to the town and then I talked a taxi drvier into bringing us up to the ruins for cheap. There we hiked for a bit to see them. It was really amazing. The fortress is on a mountain top overlooking three sides of the valley. The views were incredible. We sat up there a while just taking it in. We were two of maybe 6 people at the ruins. When we left however there was a bunch of French people on their way up. then we went back to Pisac and ... read more
