What an amazing day! Early this morning, 6:30am to be exact, we got on a bus to take us up the mountain to the Inca ruins of Machu Picchu. This site was built in the 1400-1500's. They worked on it for 90 yrs. and still did not finish it. It was built as a sanctuary for the priests and nobles. The people under the control of the Inca had to pay an annual labor tax, and it was those people who did all the hard labor. In 1911Hiram Bingham, a professor at Yale University came to Peru to find the lost city. When he arrived in Aguascalientes Calientes a local man told him about the site and guided him up to it. Restoration took many years. In 1948 it opened to tourism. Today it is considered ... read more

Hola from Aguas Calientes. Today we went from one adventure to another: 1. Went to an animal sanctuary and saw condors close up. A little too close for me! 2. We then learnEd about llamas and alpacas, and how to tell the difference. The llama's tail sticks up and the alpacas' does not. I am now an expert on Peruvian cameloids:). Feeding them grass was an adventure! 3. The bus drive into the Sacred Valley is not for the faint of heart. The horn got more use than any other part of the bus. 4. Sampling guinea pig, a favorite in Peru, was next. We came on a roadside bar-b-que with several roasting over a fire. The tour guide dubbed the head of one of them and we divided the others among us. I would not ... read more

Today had some high points and low points, literally and emotionally as we tackled our biggest hiking day yet up to Machu Picchu. Olly broke out in song the second earliest all trip, 3:55am!! I sprang out of bed in anticipation for the adventures ahead. Rach on the other hand didn't share my excitement, moving about the hotel room like a Galapagos tortoise. We had a carbo loaded breakie of muesli bars, bananas and a yoghurt drink and met the rest of our tour group at the hotel reception at 4.30am. We walked down through the town and along the river, joining fellow trekkers in the dark as we walked towards the entrance point. It was pitch black so we were guided by ... read more

Porters were up at 2.30 am and as our tent was only a couple of metres from them we were awake as well. We had to get up at 3.30 as we had to be packed up and had breakfast by 4.30. The porters have to catch a train at 5.30 from the bottom of the valley. We walked down to the check point were we had to wait until 5.30 until the check point opened. There was a very large group waiting to walk. We had our head light on to start the walk. It took about an hour to get to the Sun gate where we got our first glimpse of Machu Pichu. Some of the track was very steep. One section they call the monkey climb we went up using and hands . ... read more

We completed the 4 day jungle trek to Machu Picchu around April 22, including over 50km of hiking(22 on the Inka trail), downhill mountain biking, zip lining, and amazon jungle ending at beautiful Machu Picchu at sun rise. At MP we walked through the Inka ruins, trekked the Inka bridge, Sun Gate, and Machu Picchu Mountain. It was all a bit surreal! Enjoy..... GandR... read more

Cusco is one of the top cultural cities of Peru filled with quirky shops, huge markets selling everything from wellies (which we bought) right down to deconstructed cows heads and plenty of opportunities to get your photo taken with a lamb or alpaca. This wasn't our main reason for coming though, the main reason was to eventually work our way to Macchu Picchu via the Salkantay trek. Coming from Colca Canyon we had already done a good few days walking and we were now ready for some more. Our first day in Cusco though was utilised by booking the trip and also finding some very good places to eat and drink. So we'd booked our trip with Viajes Cusco, in the Eco Packers hostel and eaten and full English breakfast at a small place called Jacks ... read more

Best intentions of getting up early to catch the first sun rays on Matchu Picchu did not eventuate; the body was not responding after the prior days trek. The legs were surprisingly good when I finally got going. Attached photos describe the day in which the weather continued to behave.... read more
