The much anticipated Inca Trail was the only thing in South America which was booked before we left Bristol. It had been on the bucket list for a long time and this whole section of our trip was planned around it… so it kind of had to be good! Two days before, we went to the office in Cusco and were given a run-down of the trail and what we were to expect – this left us ready and raring to go! We learnt that the trail isn’t actually that long – it’s only 26 miles over 4 days – but there are two things which make it difficult. One is the altitude, and the other is the incredibly steep ascents and descents involved. We weren’t quite so raring to go at 4:30am on Friday but ... read more

Hello Friends, Family and blogger readers, 17th-20st June Over theses 4 days we embarked on the world famous Inca-Trail, to the capital of the Inca Empire. A total of 44km/27 miles, crossing 3 mountain passes, the highest of which is at an elevation of 4,200m (13,775 ft.). Day 1: Our group of 16 consisted of a family of 7 from Minnesota; a family of 3 from Chicago; a brother and sister from Sydney; and two male police officers from Australia. We were driven from our hotel in Ollantaytambo to Wayllabamba camp, which is at the 82km marker, which indicates the start of the walk. After having our passports stamped and tickets checked we then embarked on our first day of hiking. This first day was an easy 11km walk. We stopped off at a few small ... read more

Before we went on our trip, there were a few things we knew we definitely wanted to do. Of those, there were only two we had to book in advance: the Inca Trail and diving in the Galapagos. We are about to start on the second tomorrow, but this post will be about the first. To be honest, we didn't really know what to expect from the Inca trail. We knew it is a guided four day hike to Machu Picchu, and that it would be in a group, but that was about it. On arrival in Cusco we went to the office of the tour operator (Peru Treks) to pay for the trip and get the briefing. Our group would be 16 people in total. Also, it turned out that due to heavy rains we ... read more

The only other time I’d been close enough to clouds was when I went skydiving, when, you know, you expect to be falling from clouds. But that was a 15 second free-fall and all I remember from that experience is pure fear. Coming back to clouds though, we were actually in clouds—not mist, not fog, actual CLOUDS for at least a night and a day in Machu Picchu, Peru. After our two month training (relatively speaking) for the trek across the Inca trail to Machu Picchu, my husband and I were finally in the city of Cusco on Dec, 21 2014. We went with Gap Adventures for our guided tour through the Inca trail. By the way, we learned during the trek that a guided tour is mandated by the government, and later realized, it was ... read more

Back to civilisation after what should have been a 3.5 hour journey from Aguas Callientes to Cusco become 7 hours due to the Peruvian transport system ! The past four days myself and Mags have been camping in the mountains of the Sacred Valley on a 26 mile hike at an altitude of nearly 14,000 feet at its highest point while also managing to lug around sleeping bags, air matresses and camping rugsacks. Pretty tough going but well worth it as the scenary was unbelievable on the way as we managed to pass through about three different eco-systems before arriving in Machu Picchu. It was my first time camping it rough since myself and TK and some of his EPA mates headed to Duncannon beach a few years back but it went suprisingly well - slept ... read more

Buenos tardes amigos! After I published my last blov, I realized a part got cut out.. so I apologize for the quick ending on Nazca Lines, not that you noticed, but I did! And well.. its just gonna be forever lost. So, Cusco, Peru. I sold it quite short before, but again, the basic jist is.. should you go there, you'll like it. I actually really liked this city and its abundance of NorFake and outfitters shops. I won't go as far to say as stores, more of... "we have an overload of all this fake North Face stuff, so while we try to get you to book a trip with us, we hope you buy some our outdoor clothing" places. They have everything a camper or hiker could possibly need or want. Along with all ... read more

This is the longest blog I've done but we'll worth the read! We were so excited in the morning, but kind of nervous as it was going to be such a huge treck! We met up with the other people doing the Inca Trail with us which were a French couple and a Dutch couple. The first day was quite easy, we started late and only walked for I think only 5 or 6hrs (12kms) and it was mostly flat. Then when it was lunch time the Porters had already gone ahead and set up a tent for us to have lunch in and we had a beautiful three course meal! I don't think there is any other job out there that would be as hard as what the porters have. They end up running sometimes ... read more
