Our day in Lima was interesting. One thing we learned is that the people of Peru have to vote in public elections or face a huge fine. That idea might improve voting rates in the USA. The colonial buildings were beautiful but we were more excited to discover a pre Columbian archaeology dig just blocks from our hotel where within the last few weeks they found five more mummies, all young women, who apparently had been sacrificial victims. One of the most unusual places was the catacombs under the cathedral. The bones of 35,000 people are in bins and dry wells.

This morning we were up very early to catch the plane to Cuzco. It is located in the top of the Andes mountains at an elevation of 11,000 ft. They pass out cacao leaves at the airport to chew on to help people adjust to the altitude. We visited some amazing Inca ruins and explored Cuzco which is the historical capital of Peru. We saw llama grazing, climbed a lot of stairs, and had some amazing traditional cuisine 😊
