Cajamarca is another quite large town, set in the mountains and full of life. Steve from Washington DC, and Scott from Bosten both came with me to Cajamarca, and we stayed in a pretty cool hostel with a balcony over the plaza de Amaz. The first day we arrived roughly 6am and decided not to waste the day so firstly went to see the local hot springs - Los Banos del Inca. The springs were quite impressive, the actual springs you couldnt swin in because they were 70 degrees C - hot stuff! But we could swim in the pool which mixed colder water to make it a comfortable 28 degrees. After bathing for the morning, we decided to walk to a funery nich roughly 4km away. What seemed quite a good idea at first soon ... read more

after a 16 hour bus ride from guayaquil to chiclayo in peru i cant say that i was overly impressed! it was supposed to be 12 hours but problems with the road (this will become a common theme by the way) delayed us 4 hours including the border crossing. i arrived in chiclayo at 3 am! and was immediately aware of the difference in the countries. peru seems to be taking advantage of its tourists from the word go. everywhere i went, every taxi, hostal, everyone seemed to be trying to rip you off. it is no longer the cheap and easy place it was, ecuador is cheaper and you have to be very forceful and direct to be taken where you want or pay what was aggreed, which is a shame. chiclayo isnt the kind ... read more

Cajamarca merits a one line entry in a chapter preface in the Rough Guide to South America, an astounding piece of understatement for the city where arguably the most pivotal event in the modern history of the continent occurred. Try reading chapter 3 of Jared Diamond's "Guns, Germs, and Steel" for an excellent summary (even if you don't agree with the overall conclusions of the book). It was here that the conquistador Pizarro, with a small band of about 170 soldiers and cavalry, took prisoner the Inca emperor Atahualpa, despite the presence of an Inca army of tens of thousands of men. This unlikely outcome was as a result of a number of factors, including Atahualpa's complacency and the military advantage held by the Spanish courtesy of their cavalry and steel weapons. Atahualpa offered a ransom ... read more

I spent National Holidays in Cajamarca (July 25 to 29 July), i always wanted visit it... lot of people recommend me and finally i went there... i traveled with my best friends Sandra Torolira and Liliana Zeballos, 3 friends from work (Evelyn, Cynthia and Patty), Sandras ex-boyfriend and 2 friends of her. Looking a better short description of Cajamarca i found this, hope u like it... "The department of Cajamarca is characterized by slight slopes and highlands relatively low in comparison to the rest of the Peruvian Andes. The territory is made up of numerous valleys and gorges. The city of Cajamarca brings together three ingredients that make it an unforgettable destination: a magnificent Colonial architecture, beautiful countryside, and a rich history since it was the scene of an important episode of South American history. Here, ... read more

Day 323 - Monday 18 August A Peruvian girl had been sat next to me on the bus last night and she hadn´t stopped talking to me. It was obvious she liked me but I'd only just said goodbye to Yolanda a few hours before. However its good to know that my Spanish has returned and thankfully she wasn´t very good looking so I wasn´t tempted. I´d even managed to fiegn sleep for some of the journey to avoid talking to her. Like me shes also come to explore Cajamarca before taking another bus later tonight. She suggested we hang out together for the day. I tried saying no but she got really offended so I reluctantly agreed. I must admit it was useful having her around so I could sort out my bus ticket tonight, ... read more

Hello friends and family...it´s been quite some time since I´ve sat a this computer on this blog site, and lots have happened. First, a little bad news. I had taken photos of our first two weeks in southern Ecuador, and accidently deleted them, so sorry, not only for you all, but for Robin and I. Luckily we met up with a great cruising couple, named Terry and Tammy of s/v Secret o´Life, also anchored in Bahia Caraquez. I am using, with his consent some of his photos of places we both had visited. So mucho gracias to them both for their compaionship and many exquisite photos. We first headed back into the mountains to a town called Latacunga, south of Quito. We had hoped to get a more direct bus to Latacunga, but it was a ... read more

January 3 2008. Of the foodie vagabonds, Jose is doing this trip solo and much missing his partner in crime. After 40 years, I am in my dad’s hometown of Cajamarca. Yes, for those who know me I was three years old when I was here last and as hard as it might be to believe I still have memories of my time here. I have also heard so many stories from my dad, aunts, uncles, and cousins that although my memories are admittedly foggy, I cannot help but have an affection and feeling of knowing for this Andean city. The reason for my trip is that my cousins have sold the ancestral family home in Cajamarca and in a few days they hand over the house to the new ownership. Thus, this is the last ... read more
