This journey I have been on with my mother has, in large part, been defined by my father. It was, as you know, supposed to be his trip with my mother, not mine. And the trips my parents undertook whenever visiting my brother always had a certain unalterable pattern to them, no doubt borne out of experience. It was a configuration they used when visiting my sister as well. The pattern was a way fo... Read Full Entry

Family forever!
Your photos convince me that I must make this road trip--fab scenery! How wonderful to have your brother along on the final adventure of this mother and remembered-father trip. How wise to acknowledge the ebb and flow of grief, and best wishes discovering the gifts under the pain. Buen viaje!

Thank you Tara
Yes, do the trip, even without the scenery Ayacucho is worth the visit! The scenery is the added bonus :)

Those prickly pears hurt.
You can tell your mum that I bought one of those cactus fruit without spines and yet my hand was still full of them. I think there may be a knack some people have, I certainly don't! Loving the waterproof ponchos too. And I think your dad would greatly approve of how you have acted and how you have helped each other. I'm sending you all a big huge hug. Besos.

Thanks
Yes, sometimes you can even get thorns in your hand from the tuna you buy in the supermarkets... Bottom line is, you need to be careful with fruit that comes from cacti!

i managed it pretty good
in Tenerife i feast on them. I manage pretty good to pick that tuna fruit up, i brake one of big spikes and with it brush/poke out those small dots with irritating soft spikes out, even blow them off the fruit when they loose, but still some on the fruit, then i manage to peal of skin and really, very few are on my skin nor tongue, which counts as none :) its quite tidy and slow effort, but worth it! Thanks, i didnt know fruits called Tuna :)

Pisco to Ayacucho

Thanks
No, there are not many people living on the country side. A few farmers, but it hard making a living, so many farmers move to the cities.

no better
this is as good instructions as i can describe..may be better ways can be figured on your own :) the cactuses got to Canaries the same way as potatoes :) judging by areas they spread it was long time ago.
