So we were off on a 6 hour bus journey to begin our next trekking escapade. The journey in itself was an experience. This was truly a local bus. We stopped every few minutes to pick up people on the roadside. We had a comedian performing, a one man band of panpipes, singing and guitar (John bought his CD he he), the well-dressed local ladies with a new fashion of handmade embroidered skirts and waistcoats or sequined hats, every seat taken and every aisle space taken up even more and a smelly duck! At this stage 6 hours feels like nothing to us but the constant madness did feel a bit much today for some reason! We arrived as darkness fell on the town of Cabanaconde. This was to be our home for the night. A ... read more

The journey over from Puno to Arequipa was simply stunning, with the road rising to way over 4,000m and passing lakes and volcanic, snow-capped mountains one of which is known as "El Misti". There were thousands of Alpacas and Llamas roaming around and we were lucky enough to see some herds of wild Vicunas, like a cross between a camel and a deer but sadly now an endangered species. In what felt in the middle of nowhere is Arequipa, a sprawling city nestled inbetween mountains. Arequipa was just a stop off en-route to Colca Canyon but definitely worth a visit for the beautiful monastery built from white Volcanic stone and the sunset over the city is really something to see. At 3,181m deep, the Colca Canyon is the 2nd largest canyon in the world and the ... read more

After extricating myself from the clutches of La Paz, I made my way to Colca Canyon in an effort to purify myself by trekking in the wild environs of southern Peru. This canyon is actually deeper than the Grand Canyon and only plays second fiddle to one other canyon which also slithers its way through a nearby region in Peru, albeit a little more remotely located. Joining me on this trekking endeavour were some great people that I ran into whilst walking around the streets of Arequipa, recognising them as members of the bar staff from my hostel in La Paz. After a brief discussion, we all realised that we had the same aim of escaping party central in La Paz and restoring a healthy balance to our lives by going trekking. After having a conversation ... read more

One of the joys of travelling without a fixed itinerary, is taking a delightful side trip. Often these can be the highlight of a trip. So on the recommendation of our Lima travel agent, we departed Arequipa for a two day trip to the deepest canyon in the world at 3,000 metres (9,842 feet), the Colca Canyon. The drive out was interesting as we departed on the Interoceanic Highway. It stretches from the Coast of Brazil to the Coast of Peru and it cost of US$2,000 million to build. The first thing I observed was that for the first 10 kilometres out of Arequipa our bus had climbed, twisted and turned more than a 10 hour bus ride in Argentina. Our guide (Ebber) gave us a commentary of what we would see along the way. The ... read more

I am writing this entry sat almost alone in the worlds deepest canyon, the Colca. Valley, high in the Andres at 3500 meters. Snow capped mountains and volcanos in the distance. lush green valley wall and far below me a river of which I can just here its sound. Above me two Condors are circling, catching the thermals created by the sun and the valley. Thirty minutes ago there were over 200 tourists here.but they have now left and it's just me and the magnificent, butt ugly Condors. Oh and Peruvian women selling their wares, and they don't count. So what made me get out of my pit at the unholy hour of 2.45am following a great barbecue the night before? Condors and apparently ... read more

We've had some early starts on this trip, but this one really takes the biscuit. 2.30am, the alarm goes off and it feels like we've barely had time to fall asleep. Which might be because we barely have had time to fall asleep. Lying awake in the dark, I wonder why do we do this to ourselves. Wanting to make the most of our few days in Peru before we continue north to Colombia, we've arranged to go on a three day trip to Arequipa province's famous canyon country. I certainly hope it's worth it - I don't get out of bed at 2.30 in the morning for just anyone. Three in the morning and the streets of Arequipa are dark and deserted. Out of absolutely nowhere a minibus appears. We get on and sit down ... read more

Rushed through breakfast this morning as were unaware that plans for departure time had been amended and were leaving 15 minutes earlier than advised the previous afternoon. A two hour drive along a winding pass to Colca Canyon in the company of a Guide. The Guide talked to us about the area and the inhabitants who originally bandaged babies to either elongate and thin their faces or make them squat and fat depending on the area from which they originated. This mutilation was stoppd by the Conquistadors who enforced Catholism and the Spanish language on pain of death. The scenery was absolutely stunning. It is the deepest canyon in the world allegedly but not the part we saw. The deepest part would be a further 6 hrs driving and 9 hrs walking..... We hung around viewing ... read more

As it's understood we did not have access to the Internet or even phone because we were up in a canyon. The Colca canyon, which is even bigger than the Grand Canyon in the States. It's a really long way to reach it, imagine that we started at 8 in the morning and we reached the main town at 2 . Arequipa Arequipa andthe surrounding towns are build from volcanic ash, and it's needless to say that theyexploit it as. Est they can, the have their volcanic springs and even more they have a cementfactory that uses the white volcanic ash to produce their cement. This Factory is in Yura. Another interesting fact about Arequipa is that it was divided into 3 sub cities Arequipa and 2 others that were divided by Stradivari , namesakes are ... read more
