Hola dearest amigos! It has been a week since my last entry, and now I am in a new país, Peru! The past few days have been travel filled, because we Drew, Nate (see mitad del mundo, Nate riding the elephant entry) decided to cross into Peru at the most remote crossing (Zumba). Nate and Drew arrived in Cuenca on Friday night, and we left for Loja a town 7 hours south monday morning. The weekend was pretty mellow in Cuenca except for the Saturday when we went Cuy hunting. Cuy or guinea pig is a highland delicacy served in Ecuador, Peru, and I bet Bolivia. Pre-colombian peoples, the incans, to everybody living in the highlands today eats cuy--it´s kind of like turkey to us, people eat in at holidays. Luis, the dueño of the hostel ... read more

Chachapoyas is a little known name outside of Peru, and yet its place in the countries´ history is undeniably pivotal. We are now in the North of Peru, and the Chachapoyas culture thrived here in this fertile region - despite the modest elevation of 2300m, the forested hills are fed by the presence of cloud milked of moisture by the cooling of the ascending air stream from the Pacific some 200k´s away. In a process of brutal Darwinian selection, the million strong tribal population of aggressive discords earned their reputation for being tough enemies. The mighty Incas from the South felt expansive, and desired both the sacred coca growing regions of the Chachapoyas, and probably preferred to subdue a tough neighbour, rather than leave their expanding flank exposed. Suspending their internal issues to unite against the ... read more

So we got up at bastard oclock in the morning and were driven, along with a Canadian couple, to a picturesque river valley where another group of trekkers had been camping out the night before. The idea was for us to join them the rest of the way. A couple of times we had to get out and walk so the car could make it through a particularly nasty looking stretch of mud, but by now we had become accustomed to this. I slightly flipped my shit when I realised that the other group contained two 12 year old kids who would be doing the trek with us, along with their parents. Generally speaking I don´t like children, but these were well behaved and did not annoy me or attempt to communicate with me, possibly because ... read more

After Vilcabamba we wanted to head to Chachapoyas in Peru, because we´d heard that the surrounding area had some impressively jungly ruins to explore. The main border crossing is notoriously grim and dangerous, associated with much hassling and theivary and the like. Because of this, because it´s the fastest way to get to Chacha, and because I am difficult, we decided to go to this really remote border town and do the crossing there. The other, smaller crossings have only been open a few years because aparently there has been a long running border dispute between Ecuador and Peru, including a minor war about 10 years ago, and they only very recently signed a peace treaty. There´s the sort of information I probably should have been aware of before coming here, wars and stuff. Never mind. ... read more

Well, hello from Peru! Emma and I have finally made it out of Ecuador after spending nearly half our trip there, and must now hurry onwards to make it to Buenos Aires for our flight home at the start of May. This is fine, as Ecuador was amazing, but we may have tried to do a little too much in two months. Oh well, we plan to be back some day anyway as there are still lots of countries in South America we haven´t even got close to. I think my new criteria for judging the wealth or poverty of a country will be their roads. I came to this conclusion after spending two long, long fourteen hour-plus days on the road getting to where we are in Peru. The roads in Ecuador vary a lot, ... read more

He is sitting on two big boulders along a soggy dirt road waiting for his bus to pass. He is roughly an hour from Chachapoyas, the nearest town, on a dead end road in the Andes and it is sprinkling. There is a makeshift café next to him under a blue tarp serving various grilled meats, potatoes and coffee. The hood of an old blue clunker of a car is acting as a table. It is getting chilly and dark and he still has two hours until he is supposed to catch his bus. The reason for this situation is that he went on a tour of pre-Inca ruins in the morning and wasn’t going to make it back to town in time to catch his 6:00 bus. This intersection is the midway point between ... read more

Note that as is with anything, words can not discribe an experience, that goes double for this blog as I try my best to remember and recollect all that I have experienced while in the Chachapoyas area. My first memory of Chachapoyas is arriving in the morning before any light and talking to the kid who walked me to my hostal about the area, and hearing for the first of many times how safe and tranquil the Chachapoyan streets are at all hours. Needless to say this is a good sign, and the fact that I stayed at the nicest hostel I have been in for half the normal price was also a perk. Of course coming in the low season also can backfire, since this means lots of rain, but what is a jungle trek ... read more

I turned up into the mountains once again, heading for the little-known or at least lesser-known-than-Machu-Picchu ruins of Kuelap, ancient capital of the Cloud Warriors. The main town in the region is called Chachapoyas - my final choice as my favorite town in Perú. This decision was made as I groggily opened my eyes to a 5am entrance into the downtown area - and thought I was back in Cusco! The buildings are the same gleaming white with elaborate wooden balconies all along the second floors. Only, as I quickly realized, this town is much too small and friendly to be Cusco... When I got off the bus I saw the one other gringo asking advice of a bus station man. I inserted myself into the conversation, and we walked downtown together (after genuinely enthusiastic greetings, ... read more
