Hello, Ok so I have been very lazy and not entered a blog post yet even though I have been here a month now. And yes, that means I have forgotten loads and such but oh well.... Ok so first of all I've gotta explain my mix-up with Para La Tierra (PLT). So I emailed Karina (the girl who set it up) the day before I left saying that I was leaving and that I'd see her soon... The she replied saying that I had said I was leaving on April 12th, not March 12th.... I don't know how the hell I managed that!! I was always emailing her in work when I wasn't paying attention so... Aw I'm silly! But yeah I freaked out a bit because I didn't know if they'd have space for ... read more

Ate too much Chipa Guasu...now I'm Paraguayzed. Or, if you prefer: Now that I've been there, I'm the Para-guy. For some reason, not many people include Paraguay on a South American itinerary. It may be down to its relatively nascent tourist industry, and the fact that there is very little information available online about what to do there and how to get around. Paraguay is on the way up, though, and for me, the lack of detail was an incentive to visit. Officially, Paaguay is the second poorest country in South America, which is the second poorest region in the world after Africa. Unofficially, it is nothing like that in appearance. The distribution of wealth is pretty limited, true, but much of Paraguay is quite up-market and modern. The countryside away from the important routes is ... read more

And so we ventured off to a land less well travelled. Taking the bus from Puerto Iguazu to Ciudad del Este via, briefly, Brasil and the Amistad (friendship) bridge. The bus driver failed to stop at immigration (think we were the only foreigners on the bus) so we had a trek back to the border to get our entry stamps, the immigration officer had the personality of a breeze block and is our current leader of our most miserable person in South America award. Ciudad del Este is just one big supermarket, we're not saying it's a dump or anything, far from it, but it's absolutley manic, in your face wall to wall shops. You name it you can buy it cheap here, from knock off footy shirts to piglets. Hotel was a pleasant surprise though ... read more

So, with one horrendous bus ride down in order to get to Argentina as cheap as possible, we were quickly onto the next one. The destination of this bus…..Paraguay. Now, Paraguay was never really on the must do list when we planned out possible routes in South America, and therefore we never really looked much into it. This wasn’t because of any particular reason other than not many people had travelled there, and therefore we didn’t really know much about it. What we did know was that it would be cheaper to get a bus to Asuncion (Paraguay’s capital), and then another from there to BA than it would to fly from Bolivia to BA, and therefore we thought ‘What the heck, Paraguay here we come’ The bus that we got from Bolivia pretty much summed ... read more

Hello all! This time an update from Encarnacion, Paraguay (Now in Buenos Aires, Argentina), where the people are friendly, Guarani is the shared first language with Spanish, Terere is commonly drunk, horse-and-wagons roam the streets in tiny villages, things are generally cheap, and bribes can be necessary when you´re in the country illegally. Please, walk with me as I explain... I finished my last entry in Porto Murtinho, where I planned to take the boat. Locals told me the boat was to leave on saturday sometime between 6 and 7 in the morning, but that it would be good to get there sometime before in case it arrived early. Accordingly, I got up at 4, took the boat to the Paraguayan side of the river, and sat waiting. As dawn approached about an hour later, a ... read more

We left a stormy Santa Cruz early in the morning and after a bag search (everyone gets searched) and a little scratch for Stuart's guitar we board our flight and before we know it we are in Asuncion. We spent the next few days enjoying the pool, the weather, tea of courtesy and the plazas in Asuncion. We also visited the train museum, which was the original building for the old train station, and also houses the first train in South America. After enjoying Asuncion we headed to Encarnacion. We hopped aboard a local bus to take us to nearby Trinidad to visit some Jesuit ruins (the only information we were able to get about them!). After missing the stop by 6km we had to get the bus back down again. However the journey was worth ... read more

Across the river Paraná - nearly a mile wide at this point - from Posadas, in Paraguay, lie the crumbling ruins of missions founded in jungle by Jesuit priests in the 17th and 18th centuries. Here, in the baking heat and sweltering humidity, thousands of indigenous Americans, mostly Guaraní, lived in large communities presided over by Jesuits from Europe. Descriptions of the missions vary considerably depending on the viewpoint taken (from paternalistic Christianisation to philanthropic assistance) but the oddity of finding intricately carved baptismal fonts and large, red-brick churches bang in the middle of the Paraguayan forest is undeniable. The two 'Missionary Reductions' (their official name in Colonial times) we visited - Trinidad de Paraná and Jesús de Tavarangüe - are now part of a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The ruins are well preserved but, unsurprisingly, ... read more

I finally left Brazil! I was a little bit scared to travel alone and not have any plans but Ive since realized this is the best thing I have ever done. I am staying in a hostel in Iguazu, on the Argentinian side. It´s the first hostel I´ve ever stayed in and it´s really nice!!! I flew to Iguacu, Brazil from Campinas. My Brazilian horoscope the day before said that it would be a really bad idea to fly which was actually really quite rude of a horoscope if you asked me. Anyway, I didn´t really think about it but the flight was the scariest flight I´ve ever been on it was very very turbulent and as we were taking off ice was hitting me from the ceiling. But I survived thanks to the ¨It´ll be ... read more

Arriving to Asuncion from Horqueta Friday morning brought me into my last week in Paraguay. I worked from home on the list of confirmed participants for the Conference during the day after getting some rest, and met with Martin that night to say goodbye and thank him for all he had done for me. That night I ate at a crepe restaurant with the interns. It was really cute! On Saturday, I decided to wake up early and hop on a bus to El Centro (downtown) to buy some last souvenirs and gifts, and to see downtown one last time before I leave. I walked around all morning until the early afternoon and walked down the Paseo Artesanal (artisan walk). Also, there happened to be a parade with people dressed in “typical dress” outfits who were ... read more
