Paraguay seems to be a bit of an enigma. I’m still not quite sure what I make of the place - certainly very different to all the other South American nations. Few tourists make the effort to visit the country, yet this is undoubtedly one of the main appeals for me. The lack of basic tourist infrastructure (hostels, public transport to the more isolated sites of interest) is a bit of an annoyance, but Paraguay seems to be more authentic than the more touristy areas nearby in Argentina or Brazil. It’s the only country in South America to have an indigenous language as an official language (Guaraní), and the towns (at first sight) seem less filled with American superbrands like McDonalds. The crossing from Posadas to the Paraguayan city of Encarnación was, as all border crossings ... read more

Hola Paraguay! People have questioned why we would choose to come here, especially considering it is the most corrupt country outside of Africa; one of the hottest countries in the Americas; the 2nd poorest country in South America; 85% uninhabitable; has a 1st language of Guarani; and - according to one of our guide books - sees more jaguars than tourists. The draw, all of the above. We are willing to endure the incredible heat to finally be back in a country that is cheap to visit, especially after spending the past couple months in Chile, Uruguay and Argentina. It is also nice to be back in a country that hasn´t been completely taken over (yet) by MacDonald´s or any other major American corporation that can be found in many of its Latin American counterparts.

The good, the bad and the downright ugly of Latin American buses: Bus 1: Sunday night’s departure from Buenos Aires was easily the most luxurious bus trip ever: “Cama suite” is Argentina’s road-bound equivalent of long-haul first class on the airlines: a private screen, meal service, a glorious view, comfy huge seat, legroom galore and - oh, joy of joys - a Laz-y-Boy style seat that actually unfolds flat into a bed with “walls” front and back so that, provided with blanket and pillow, one can while away a 12-hour trip with actual sound sleep. The bus station in BA is an enormous affair, with 60 or so platforms, shops and restaurants, and crowds to match. Our bus didn’t come up on screen as promised, but we managed with our pigeon Spanish to find the right ... read more

Everyone on the bus got off at the immigracion on the Argentine side, people were running out of the bus to be ahead of the queue, i just followed them, it took no more than 5 minutes for me to be processed, then boarded the same bus which luckily was still there. It was quite full and tried to get on it at the back door, a group of women were blocking the way up so i had to force myself at the door, polite words such as desculpe and por favor, did not work so i forced myself in and said excuse me , thank you! after, I heard someone whispering "mochilero". Those women were a bit rude, they wanted to be right out near the door to be the first to disembark at the ... read more

Today I visited the Jesuits Missions in Paraguay (Trinidad and Jesus). I decided that it´s time for an adventure, so I made my own way there. I could´ve taken a tour, but the tour was too expensive for what I thought it would be worth (70 euros), considereing Paraguy is just across the river. Of course, I knew better, and my guidebook made it look so simple. So off i went at 8am, took a public bus from Posadas across the river to Encarnacion, Paraguay. I have an EU passport which means I don´t need a visa, which made things simpler. At the immigration a gentleman next to me (who was very nice and spoke English) told me that I was crazy for travelling on my own. Nice. So after the bridge, and the hopping on, ... read more

The road less traveled....Paraguay. I have met 1 person in 7 months that has been to this country. I needed a $45 Visa to enter and Posadas, Argentina had the consulate office to get it done. It only took two hours... then I was off. I arrived in Encarnacion which is a border town with Posadas. I felt at home right away. On the bus ride into town you pass several markets that look similar to those in Peru. You can feel the negotiator in you get excited. It would not be like Argentina where prices are set. No no. This country is ranked as the second poorest in South America and you can see why....sort of at least. While it looks quite poor because of the streets and street vendors selling a variety of things ... read more

The Paraguayan consul in Foz De Iguazu informed us that we could obtain visas to visit Paraguay in Posadas, Argentina, so we hopped on the bus and went. We stayed at the Hotel Colon, whose owner, Monica, helped us out on the morning of Thursday, December 27th by taking us to the consulate, where we found out we would need three additional passport photos, and several copies of our passport. Thankfully, Monica took us to a place right next door where we could get everything - except of course for American cash - which the Paraguayan government needed as a fee (no, Argentine cash was not good enough). After attempting to take out American cash from at least 10 ATMs, I realized that I would then need to just go ahead and change my travelers cheques ... read more

A lot of people we met before and after our trip to Paraguay asked the same question "Why Paraguay?" After going there we were thinking the same. Once again it was the same reason why we went to Uruguay because it was so close and we are travelling South America and you can’t expect everywhere to be amazing! For me football reasons were also on the agenda as we tend to get drawn against them in the World Cup so for next time it will be nice to say, I’ve been there! We started the day fairly early as we were trying to get to Encarnacion about 8 hours away and few different buses to get there! We got a local bus from Misiones for the 30 min trip across the border to Ciudad Del Este. ... read more
