Last night we went out for a while to get some dinner with Richie, Lauren, Kevin, Brett, and myself. We went to a place called Lido Bar which was pretty solid food, I had a hamburger and fries which was probably the best hamburger I have had in South America since I have been here. It was chilly at dinner! We were all bundled up and this was definitely not what Asuncion was supposed to be like! I thought it was hot here. We went back to the hostel so we could get some more warm clothes on and so Kevin could grab some more money and then we set off for a bar a few blocks away called 904 which was supposed to have 2 for 1 beer however they did not, the promotion had ended by the time we got there. The place was pretty cool, packed with local Paraguayan youth and some foreigners you could tell. We got a tower of beer and finished it quickly. I wasn’t feeling very good. I haven’t had a cigarette in three days and my body is doing that thing where it is coughing up all the nasty shit I have put
in it for the last three months. I started an antibiotic regimen because the last thing I want is to be sick when I start work! We went to a bar called Britannia bar afterwards and I had a whiskey which made me feel better and we had a couple beers and chatted for a while. Around 2am we came back to the hostel and passed out. I woke up around 10am and checked some email and had breakfast and then Brett and I headed out to a market about a half hour walk from here. It was really cool but also madness. It was probably the most “South American” experience we have had thus far, Peru being a close second. The streets were filled with cars and people, smells were abundant and not all of them were pleasant. We walked around for a while and Brett purchased a thermos for his mate and I found a tailor where I got two dress shirts for less than $35 US. That’s a hell of a deal and just what I needed, some cheap clothes, and they even say Asuncion, Paraguay on the tag. Haha. After I bought the shirts we made
our way up another street that was just packed with people, I bought some “stunna shades” as Brett calls them because they were only like $3.50 US and I figured why not. I mean why not. We were hungry and there were all kinds of street vendors selling what smelled like delicious food on the corners. Brett and I stopped at one and got two skewers of pork and some manioc, which is like a yucca or potatoes vegetable that was filling and very nice. Eating on the street amongst all the Paraguayans and the noise and the smoke from the grill was a truly great experience and something I won’t soon forget. I bought a lot of wares on the street and this market was just massive so I properly could have bought everything I wanted in the world at this place. They had everything from fresh fish to perfume, to running shorts, sports jerseys, fruits, vegetables, socks, watches, phone chargers, soft drinks, shoes, dresses, underwear! Anything you can imagine was at this place. It was a sight to behold. After we spent all our money on wares in the market we made our way back to the hostel
and on the way saw the first train ever brought to Paraguay which was kind of cool, except there was a book fair in the building and it may have been the most boring place in Asuncion today. We’re now watching the Champions league game between Barcelona and Manchester United, let’s go Barca. Tomorrow I go back to Buenos Aires, kind of sad to leave Paraguay but hey it’s been a good run.
