But when you consider a really good weaver can only make 4 or 5 hats a year, you can see why the softest, finest Panama hats can sell for so much.I came away with one tho--didn't quite pay that much, but it's a cutie. Bob tried one on just long enough for a picture then wouldn't buy it. Says he wouldn't wear it. But I think it makes him one cute Chicago boy, don't you?... read more

Geo: -1.56124, -80.8072We were out to lunch today and met the neatest people. Being the shy person that I am I offered my wife to them as their photographer. This immediately created a bond between all of us. They took pictures. We took pictures. We laughed. The one man that spoke English tried to explain why they were there and his wife immediately started jabbering excitedly to Karen. It's always exciting to meet people who are thrilled to meet you. That was the experience we had at that moment. It was a brief encounter but as we left there were hugs and kisses for all. We'd taken a local bus to Ayampe, a small fishing village down the coast from PL and were wandering about trying to find a restaurant called the house of corviche (Cabina de Corviche), ... read more

Geo: -1.56124, -80.8072They'd all told us this was the most beautiful beach they'd ever seen. It's an unbelievable crescent shaped beach about a mile long that has not been darkened by shops or condos. Just simply beauty with no distractions of human structures. And no trash. This undisturbed white sand curve of natural beauty is anchored on each end by completely vertical cliffs and surrounded on 3 sides by an what for us is an extremely unique national park of dry forest. It was so beautiful, we had to climb to the viewpoint for pictures. On the beach were hundreds of these little red sand crabs that would scamper away (sideways) so fast that no way can you catch them--no matter how fast you run they stay ahead of you like it's some kind of game they're playing. But notice ... read more

Geo: -1.56124, -80.8072I know. I know. We haven't written for a long time, but we've been really busy having fun. Remember talking about going over to the main offices of our school while we were in Quito? Well Ligia the director, whose office is in Quito, is here in PL for the weekend with a student named Ensu (which probably isn't spelled right, as she's South Korean) and we've been having a ball.Ligia is such a kick! Saturday morning all of us went to the fish market--Raquel, too: Bob and 4 women. He loves being king--they keep telling him in this country the man is king and he seems to be adapting pretty well.Shawn, the fish market wasn't ANYTHING like the market in Chennai--you'll see in the pictures. Later Raquel made ceviche, as she said they ... read more

Geo: -1.56124, -80.8072If you've ever ridden a night bus in Ecuador, you know about the pat-downs. On the surface anyway, Ecuador is very concerned about security. We were all searched before we could board--one woman to search the whole load of us. Our bags, our persons--they patted down some people and did a cursory look with others. Bob was really hoping for a strip search, but I guess we just don't look suspicious enough. We could have had all kinds of nasty ammo on us; they'd never have known.I didn't do very good choosing the bus, I'm afraid. It was a semi-cama which means the seats lean back 3" more than an airplane's--not the nearly full recline plush leather seats of the full-cama buses we'd always taken in Argentina, Uruguay and Chile. Our knees were jammed ... read more

After our adventure leaving Peru, things returned to normal. As is our wont, we boarded a bus for the next leg of our travels. This particular bus was going to Guayaquil which happened to be where we wanted to go. Your correspondent was quite happy about this, but Ecuadorian buses are not to the same standard as Peruvian buses – a boneshaker would be an appropriate description. It trundled along through hundreds of miles of banana plantations and every time it slowed down, vendors would jump on selling water, fruit, cakes and even such much needed items as tape measures or nail clippers. The art of clipping ones toes on a bus has not yet caught on in the UK, but I see it as a potential way of raising funds to return to South America ... read more

Puerto López is a small coastal fishing town with a population of just 14,000 alongside a pleasant beach. Whilst not a beach destination for travellers, most head to Montañita in Ecuador or Mancora in Peru, Puerto López whilst lacking surf unlike its rivals, does have one thing that pushes it above its relative neighbours, Puerto López actually has plenty going on outside of it's beach, specifically in the shape of Parque Nacional Machalilla, the reason that we were in town. Our first day in town was following our first night bus experience in Ecuador, something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy. A war movie was put on for the first two hours and despite their only being a few gringos on the bus, the movie was put on in English, good for us, utterly confusing ... read more

Luckily we did manage to catch the bus to Baños that evening, and arrived at midnight. We were expecting to be dropped off in a bus station and instead it was the side of the street with groups of men lingering everywhere. We didn´t really want to be left there, but had no choice as the bus quickly sped off.. leaving us pretty scared. We marched to the hostel as quickly as possible avoiding eye contact, ignoring comments, and with our heads deep inside our guidebooks trying to see the map in the dark. Baños is Gorgeous! Lots of waterfalls everywhere, and famous for its thermal baths as well as its extreme sports. Unfortunately when we were there it rained non stop... it was pretty grim. Instead of cycling around all of the waterfalls we climbed ... read more

These were now my last days in Ecuador! I spent a week on the coast in a small fisherman´s town called Puerto Lopez. Now is the season for whale watching, so of course I did it! Whales are now in the bay to get their cubs and to eat enough to get the warming fat they need for their long and tiring journey to the cold cold north. The first day I arrived in Puerto Lopez I went on a boat and we saw a whole group of whales. I had a few glimpse of their enormous humps and I saw a tail. But unfortunately they were now too heavy to attempt any jumps from all the food they had eaten! The rest of the day I spent on la Isla de la Plata (island of ... read more

So we eventually left Mancora. It was hard but we did it (despite Eoghan trying to convince me to ditch our bus ticket and stay longer). I would have happily stayed there longer (a year maybe!) but time was running out before our flight out of Quito to start making our way home. And Eoghan was dying to see some turtles. So we booked a night bus for the Sunday night to Guayaquil, which we had heard bad things about so we intended to leave straight away to Puerto Lopez. That was simple enough once we navigated our way around the massive bus station in Guayaquil. We got a bus to Jipijapi and we were told we could get one to Puerto Lopez from there. It was all pretty simple. People kept getting on the buses to ... read more
