WHALE HO!!
That´be a whale then. They really are rather big. My camera fails to do it full justice, but zoom in a bit and it looks cool. n this part of the world the sky doesnt lie flat against the land, creating a sloping sky effect as you can see hare hey there, it´s Rich
We departed the marvelous town of tena, after our marvellous kayak experiance, and trolled merrily off to the town of Puerto Lopez. This is described as a ´beautiful fish hoók bay´ where you can watch fshing boats and generally chill. This it sort of was, but the guide book made no mention of the open drains running down the dirt roads, or the twenty strong packs of ferel dogs roaming the streets and barking all nght. After being kept awake by the sam dog for two hours by its incessant racket, I tried to silence it by means of large rocks expertly propelled at (or in fact near) its head. Forced to beat a hasty retreat by the sudden arival of all its biggest most rabid looking mates though, so it was a bad idea really.
The main reason for the trip to this twn was a trip to the Isla del Plata, the silver island (so called because of the huge quantity of bird crap adorning the rocks). On the way out via a small and unstable sped boat laden with horrible and objectionable people, we did a spot of whale watching. The whales
WHALE HO!! AGAIN!!!
Another Whale!! Check out the size of the bugger compared to the boat! were hump backs, and it seems they dnt get the name for nothing, it was that special time when mommy and daddy whales who love each other very much have a special cuddle. I am glad to say that now have a library of photos of small black indecipherable blobs in the far dstance to rival even that of my father!! Predicatably the one whale that breached the surface very close to the boat did so while my camera was in my pocjket, in a dry bag, and totally inaccessable. Damn it! Simlarly two pairs of large rays who got airborne alongside were not photographed, but they were wicked. I had no idea that rays could fly. As far as i can determine this is what Mantas do, but these were no more than four foot acros, if anyone can shed any light (looking at Dom) then please do. On the island we witnessed much of the bird life people hope to see at the Galapagos, particularly Brow pelicans, Stormy Petrols of various types, Magestic and another type of Frigates, Blue footed and Masked Boobies, Red Billed Tropicbirds, numerous vultures (which, bizzarely, proved mot exciting to my utterly barmy girlfriend)
Magnificant Frigates
Frigates are bad tempered. They are knon as the ´piraates of the sky´for two reasons. Firstly their small oil secreting gland prevents them diving for fish, so they have to steal them off other birds, secondly they drink lots of rum.. I like rum and lots of other stuff besides. So, instead of a fortune on a whale watching holiday, and about $1000 for the Galapagos, we saw most of that stuff for about twenty quid. Brilliant.
We are now in Monañita, just down the coast, and i´ll stick a couple of photos from there on too.
For gods sake someone email me.
