New Cathedral
The lovely new Cathedral in Cuenca Well, today was Cuenca independence day so we had a day off work. Unfortunately with load of our group ill at the moment, we didn´t get to go to Vilcabamba but i´m sure we will at a later date. Instead we stated in Cuenca and chilled out with some of the Quito girls.
Using our free morning to its best advantage, Kat and I got up bright and early and went and explored Cuenca and took some much needed photo´s of the place! We went to see inside the new Cathedral, which was really beautiful, although very over the top as most churches, which are mostly catholic, are here. We did however get stuck in mass (which we didn´t understand!) and then had to sneak out before it got to communion..! Never mind, it was worth the visit. After that we went to the little local craft market which sells mainly wooden items..all very beautiful and handmade in the most part. I don´t think i´ve ever seen so many spoons in my life..if anyone wants some bringing back just let me know!! We decided that we deserved some ice cream...however the waiter forgot us and we had to run
home to make it back for lunch! Well worth it though, that ice cream is amazing!!
Even though we had the day off from school in the morning, unlike the others who decided not to go to their aft placements, we went to work in the afternoon at the orphanage as we can´t get enough of it, and obviously they don´t have holidays and are open and need help every day.
After we got back from work we went into the centre for a salsa concert...however, the stage had collapsed and then the president arrived and waved at people for a while, so it was a bit mental and Kat and I just gave up and scrambled through the crowd to find the others. We decided it was time for some more food, or went to our friends restaurant and salsered (salsa-ed?!) away until the boys got bored...again! Seriously, with 5 girls I don´t know how its possible!!
Friday was a little more eventful, and we spent the day with the Quito girlies who had come up for the weekend. We met them at their hostal, and then went for some tasty tasty ice cream at Angelus in the main square, right next to the cathedral. We then took the girls for a proper look round the cathedral. Its really very beautiful, although ridiculously over the top inside! We went for a bit of a wander to the Museo de Arte Moderno after and then realised it was closed..! So we went for a little walk by the river, and ended up at a market where we spent a substantial amount of time buying scarves and rings! Some chillaxin in the park followed and then some tasty tasty food at Cafecito! After a brief stop home to say hi to the fam, we went back out...for more food!! Wohoo! Incredibly chilled day but really nice just to take some time out!!
Saturday was...well not so chilled!! We met the girls again at Cafecito, but this time they were joined by the lovely Sarah and Imogen, who were waaaay to energetic for just getting off a 9 hour bus ride!! Pretty much straight away we went to the Museo de Banco Central and saw the "art" and Inca ruins there which although small were really beautiful and quiet. Went for a bit of grub after (suprise suprise!) and then for a wander around the market, which is lovely. Went for a bit of coffee and cake at a little back street cafe after and then for a bit of shopping for the party that night!! I was very restrained and didn´t buy anything and was very restrained!! Went home and got dolled up and then went to meet the others at Cafecito!! Off we trotted to the difficult to find house of Roberto, one of our Ecuadorian crew out here! Much fun and laughter was had and as usual went home early at 4am...! And even then we would of stayed but I was ill 😞 The high point for me being the boys making us food at 3 in the morning! Full plate of meat, potatoes, scrambled egg (love that now mum!) and rice! Seriously, you English boys need to learn some things of these Ecuadorians, including Salsa and yogurting..although maybe not the latter!!
Sunday was a later starting and mellow affair...I got up at 12:30! Me and Kat went out at 2, abit of ice cream, flowers and black and white photos later and we went and met the others. Tried to go to the cinema but it was closed so we just went for more ice cream!! Went for a delicious dinner after complete with tasty red wine and mushroom spagetti!! Mmmm...
Bode farewell to the Quito girls and headed off home, happy that we have now seen at least a little bit of Cuenca!!
