Las Chicas DunningLas Chicas DunningLas Chicas Dunning

Shari, Ansley and Marleigh at the 'Rainbow Cafe' in Antigua, Guatemala (August 2008)
Hmmm -- where has the time gone? I can remember when we first conceived of this idea, many, many, months ago, and wondering whether it would be possible. How we started squirreling away some money, little by little, then started holding some fundraising events (and people scratching their heads wondering why we were trying to raise funds for a trip so far in the distance), creating summer camps and wondering how it was going to come together.

Well -- here we are with plane tickets in hand, reservations for 2-weeks of language schooling, a month of volunteering at the 'Fundacion del Arte Mundo' in Banos, Ecuador and 6-weeks in Trujillo, Peru, with places to stay. We are still working on trying to put together an opportunity for the girls to attend school in Peru, and wondering whether we can get ourselves to Machu picchu.

We still have some need to 'beef up' (so, do we vegetarians say some need to 'tofu up'?) our travel fund, we need to purchase travel supplies and the appropriate luggage for this trip. We have a few more innoculations to get (at this time, we have opted not to get the typhoid or yellow fever vaccine) and we also still need to find the right person or persons to stay in our house.

Yes, much remains to be done in the next two months, and before you know it, it will be time to leave.

Two months to go
Hi Shari, Sounds like things are moving along well! Good for you. Your family must be getting very excited. I know that we are! Our Spanish is so rusty though. I guess that we should start looking at all those irregular verbs again. It'll be good to be back in Spanish speaking countries again. We have a friend who took 10 ukeleles to Guatemala and is teaching the kids in Xela how to play them. Imagine ukes in Guatemala. The kids LOVE them. Hope that you got my previous email and good luck with your fundraising. We did okay with a little puppet busking during the month of October! Connie
