Hola Amigos! I was a bit lazy about taking photos this past month. Thanks to Colin and Michelle for letting me use some pics they took. There are more pictures than there is text, so scroll all the way to the bottom and click on "next" if you want to see them all. Colin is a friend of a friend who has become a friend of mine...he comes to Ecuador every year to climb an Andean peak (or two) and occasionally he'll come and spend a few days in Baños as well. This time he was with his lovely wife, Lori and two of their friends. We went out for tapas at La Tasca and since there were 5 of us we ordered one of each thing on the menu. Delish!! After dinner, needing something sweet, ... read more

Friday 21stNovember 2014 On Friday we stood on the Equator! We didn´t think it would be as momentous an event as it turned out to be. It is just a line, after all, painted on the ground, near a rather grand monument, but it means so much more when one reaches it. This yellow painted line is merely the manifest indication of the zero; the zero. It is pretty awesome, as in “Wow, this is the Equator! We are an equal distance from Pole to Pole! There are very few places in the world where one can stand on the Equator, so few people have done so. We felt extremely lucky to do so. Ecuador and Kenya are the only two countries in the world with equatorial temperate climates. Elsewhere, ... read more

Another great day spent in Otavalo area. We went to Hacienda Cusin in the morning for horseback riding and an amazing lunch. The Imbaburra volcano was in the background. The country is dotted with gorgeous old haciendas, quite a few of which are run as hotels and restaurants. It was a little too fancy and white linen for us so we asked to sit out on the terrace where we were very comfortable. Fantastic lunch! I've never seen a soup tureen used. All the food was like art, beautiful & colorful, not to mention delicious. We managed to skirt the rain during our outing but as we waited for a driver the downpour started..... and ended about 30 minutes later.....just as we arrived in Cotacachi. Cotacachi is filled with store after store selling leather goods. I ... read more

I CLOSE the assemblage of barbed wire and rough poles that does duty for a gate and join the neighbours' children at the roadside. While I´m exchanging morning greetings with Doña Consuela, a camioneta comes along; she shepherds all of us up onto the truck floor. I am among a gaggle of primary school kids and three of the oldest people I´ve ever seen. One has rheumy eyes. On is bent over like an inverted L. The third is so frail he could vanish in front of my eyes. On the way we pass los orsos waiting for their bus. They´re not bears, just ¨bear volunteers¨ known as "los gringos de los orsos, the bear volunteers." They pay US$600 a month to live in a house in the village and participate in the Andean Bear Research ... read more
