The flight didn't seem long & the view of the islands was awesome with views of the beaches, dark blue water & cluster of islands. One thing that was a little bit frightning was the runway was short & the plane went all the way to the end, making a turn to go back up for the complete stop! For a few seconds it looked like we would end up in the ocean! We did land safely on SAN CRISTOBAL ISLAND. The airport was very small & we found the area to check in for our specific ship. The people that checked us in were our naturalist guides. All people waited in the same place no matter where you were going and it consisted of a open roof area with long benches. We were picked up ... read more

Hola Amigos! We just returned to Quito today from an amazing 8-Day cruise in the Galapgos Islands. It´s hard to summarize 8 incredible days, so this will hav eot be rather brief. Our sailing ship, the Sagitta, was outstanding, as was the captain, crew, and especially the cook. Our Guide was disappointing, but more on that later. All the other guests on the cruise were really cool and we all got along, which was a pleasant surprise. There were folks from the UK, Holland, Switzerland, Italy, and even other Canadians, who joined us on the second day of the cruise. Their original boat also had problems, then their agent booked them onto the Darwin Explorer, which they immediately refused when they saw how old it was and the bad shape it was in. It sank the ... read more

What an amazing place! Our trip to the Galapagos has more than exceeded our expectations. We had debated long and hard about the expense of this trip but it turned out to be worth every penny. The week was spent onboard the Aida Maria, cruising around the islands. Our guide was a local and also a qualified marine biologist, who was very knowledgeable and had an uncanny ability to make the wildlife ‘perform’ for us. Every day we were blown away by close encounters with the wildlife, which before this trip would have seemed unbelievable. We experienced enough in this week to take near enough 600 photos!! Unfortunately we can’t fit them all on our blog! On our first day we visited Ochoa beach and went swimming. In the water we saw turtles and some friendly ... read more

Hey, back from the Galapagos Islands and we must say it was the best trip we´ve had so far. We hadn´t done much previous research on the islands since we didn´t decide to go until a few days before we left...it was the best impulse buy ever. We were on a 14 passenger boat called the Beluga, which toured most of the islands for eight days straight. Nick thinks he´s just about to get his sea legs any time now, while Sarah keeps complaining that the land is rocking. Two things we didn´t think about before we left: that the islands would be volcanic and desolate despite the wealth of fauna, and that we would be on a boat that was rocking 80% of the time....oh well, nothing a little gravol and booze couldn´t cure. (Psst...don´t ... read more

#3- The Galapagos Islands- Thursday, September 1, 2005 Welcome to my new journal. This is my first entry for travelblog.org however it is my third journal entry since I began travelling in South America on August 4th. In the future I may add my 2 old entries to the travelblog in order to have a complete set. The Galapagos Islands…where do I start? How can I explain in words what must be experienced to be believed? It is truly a world of its own. It is so different from anything else that it will be difficult to describe. Here goes nothing… I organised my tour from Quito with a friend I met in the hostel El Centro del Mundo. Andrew and I walked the streets of the Mariscal Sucre area of Quito (a.k.a. Gringo Central) in ... read more

Arriving at the Galapagos Islands in the airport. The next thing to do is pay out $100 as a national park entry fee, supposedly to go towards conserving the islands, but i'm not so sure about that. Rather expensive beginning for my South American trip, but this place is changing so fast that it will likely be much more expensive and touristed in 20 years time, better to see it now. Because the airport near Santa Cruz was closed for tarmac repair, we had landed on San Cristobal, with a small town that wasn't geared up for tourism like Puerto Ayora. We were met by our boat tour guide (Jorge) and shunted off to the dock to load us onto the boat (The Guantanamera). Once there we quickly settled in and then went to the top ... read more

Back on main island again briefly today to visit the Darwin Research Station, where they keep the giant tortoises (and boy were they giant, apart from the babies, some of which were very small). Boring for you maybe, but I need a record of what I´ve seen. Now let me think: When first arrived at harbour to go to boat, sea lions and pelicans all lying around/standing on peoples´boats. Funny black seagulls. Then we went somewhere, an island, and on land for lots more sea lions (always one lying on the jetty as you approach), many feeding. Blue footed boobies, saw a female take over from a male in incubating the eggs but they didn´t "dance". They had no fear of us. Lots of red and blue crabs, the young ones are black. Then, some snorkelling. ... read more

Now, I can only be away from the sea lions and iguanas for a minute but I had to come on-line quickly to rave. I´m scrapping my no saying "You Have to come here" or "This is the Best ever" rule to say both those things and also would anyone like to sell their possessions, bar snorkelling masks and underwater cameras, and come and live against a cliff here with me? We can eat turtles and boiled bright red and blue crabs, and snorkel all day long. Then chat about how evolution is The best and most interesting thing there is. I have been centimetres from the face of a sea lion who bared her teeth in my face. Things are going to get better, too, I bet, especialy now I´ve bought tablets for the darned ... read more

After difficulty waking (Ana) up the next morning, we headed out to South Plaza Island. Ana (and Carlos, of course) napped on the bus and on the boat (good thing the boat had eight beds). Jorge was marginally easier to understand this time around as the group somehow convinced him to give explanations in Spanish at least part of the time. His behavior, though, was perplexing. Especially for a trained guide in the Galápagos National Park. Our group was enjoying the walk along South Plaza Island. The foliage formed a red carpet over much of the island. Cactus, land iguanas, and sea lions were plentiful. Then Jorge started explaining a bit about the land iguanas´diet. They eat the reddish vegetation and supplement their diet with cactus (for water). The iguanas do not climb and must wait ... read more

"Hello! Everybody ready?! It´s George, your guide. It´s time to go to Bartolomé! The bus is waiting!" boomed a man with an Ecuadorian accent. It was only 4:45 am. It was still dark out. We hadn´t even heard any roosters yet (they usually start crowing way too early in the morning). Though, our alarm had just gone off. No, we were not ready yet. We had been told that the bus would would pick us up at our hotel at 5:00 am. We had packed up our stuff the night before. All we had to do was get dressed, grab our daybag and head downstairs. Most of our group arrived downstairs at the bus at the same time. Except Carlos. Had anyone woken up him yet? How could he not have heard George? Wow, he´s a ... read more
