- FOOD: Generally excellent food on the tour - breakfast of fruit, juice, herbal teas, BROWN toast, crispy bacon, ham, cheese, cornflakes, muesli and yogurt. Lunches and dinners served with soup first, always different. Nice deserts too. - AREA: Heaven. WOOOOOOOW. 1st class yacht, volcanic islands, totally unspoilt and animals, birds and fish galore that are super friendly. Such a nice break from the general hassle of Quito and so nice to be looked after and have the decisions already made for you. - PEOPLE: Nice tour mates although slightly irritating American family with 4 kids and a very moany NZ woman. Informative guide even though he wasn't a barrel of laughs. - WEATHER: Quite a lot of wind and rain but occasional sun bathing sessions. Some choppy seas! First of all a bit of back tracking... after Cuzco I cheated like mad (so much for busing around this continent) and flew to Lima. Stayed in Miraflores which is the posh part of town and quite frankly was characterless with lots of the usual US branded restaurants etc. Had my first cebiche (seafood marinated and cooked by lime juice) which was rather lekker and then spent my afternoon in these little minibuses whizzing around Lima trying to get a ticket out of there! Next day and off it was to Ecuador. 27 hour bus trip (an additional three hours due to several breakdowns) and I found myself in southern Ecuador. I had met two other Gringas mad enough to do the same trip in one go and spent a couple of days with them in ... read more

The first thing that I noticed was the smell. A unique, arousing blend of sea spray and jet fuel, whipped along on the hot afternoon breeze. As I followed the orange safety cones across the tarmac, that scent carried a strong feeling of segmentation. Like a Russian Doll, this was to be another holiday from the business of travelling. I had flown out of the cold bustle and smog of Quito and escaped to a paradise. Admittedly, it seemed like everyone else had done the same, and there was a stiff USD100 Park Entry Fee but neither of these issues could detract from the excitement of finally arriving at The Galapagos Islands. Clearing the khaki shorts and tanned legs of customs, we formed back into the little group of four that had been broken up by ... read more

Galapagos is one of the coolest (not cold) places... on the main island of San Cristobal, there was dessert, rainforest, farmland and beaches.... obviously full of some of the wildest animals (mostly birds, , tortoises, sea lions and reptiles). Here are some of the pics... cheers.... read more

After the Encounter overland trip finished in Caracas, I was convinced by Brian to join him in the Galapagos . He, along with others left for Quito on a different flight pre booked by Drago as they continue their trip from Ecuador, meanwhile I was booked on another flight. I asked Wilma or Brian if they can buy me Colombian coffee when they make a stop over in Bogota, which they did thanks so much, meanwhile my flight left Caracas and then turned back due to mechanical problems and we were so delayed I didn't get to Quito til midnight, by chance a Danish couple is staying at the Secret Garden like me so we carpooled and hire a taxi together. Got a dorm room and slept, next morning met up with the guys in their ... read more

So a week and a bit ago I bought a tour and plane ticket for galapagos. I left it to the last minute, thinking and hoping that I´d receive a bargain, o I went to a few travel agents last monday, who all told me the ´last minute price´of 650 dollars, so I used my incredible haggling skills to lower it to 630, and left feeling rather pleased with my efforts. To be told by the landlady in my house on my return that I paid WAY more than I should have, more like 500 would be appropriate at the last minute. So if anyone reading this is going to go to the galapagos and is going to buy a last minute price, please fleece (timar) them as they fleeced me. The tour was for eight ... read more

I've just spent the past few days sailing around the Galapagos Islands. We visited the islands of San Cristobal, Esponola, Floreanca, and Santa Cruz. I think the lasting memory of the islands that I'll take back home with me is going for my first swim at a beach in San Cristobal. I hadn't been in the water for more than 2 minutes when I noticed a dark shape in the water nearby. It turned out to be a sea lion pup who had swum by to say hello. "Got any spare fish on you, mate?"", it asked. "Sorry, buddy. I don't eat seafood", I had to reply rather regretfully. Luckily my new mate wasn't too offended and let me take several photos of him when he later went to do some sunbaking on the nearby rocks. ... read more

Post Office - Floreana Puerto Ayora - Santa Cruz Our last full day in the Galapagos. The morning excursion had us visiting the island of Floreana at Post Office bay; this is where whalers used to leave messages for home in a barrel. Anyone passing by heading in that direction would pick up the letters and deliver them personally. This tradition continues today. The mailbox itself now is covered with bumper stickers, graffiti, and messages scratched on driftwood, it's quite an amazing sight. We shuffled through the postcards, and actually found one for Austin that had been left just that morning! Since we would be home in two days, it would probably get there earlier had it been sent via the regular mail. Several other passengers picked up postcards and left their own (ours STILL hasn't ... read more
