We woke up super early this morning with the hope of getting to the airport and finding seats on a flight to the Galapagos. At about 5am the cab picked us up from Hostal Mantesa and off to the airport we went. TAME and LAN were both open so we got pricing from them, but we had to wait a bit before AeroGal opened up (the normally cheapest option) only to learn their flight was full. So TAME it was for our trip to the Baltra Airport, the more popular of the two airports in the Galapagos (other on San Cristobal). Having been at the airport super early we had to kill a few hours before the special Galapagos security screening could occur where they check your luggage for any fruits, veggies, meats, cheeses, etc. At ... read more

The question of whether or not to visit the Galapagos if you are on a backpackers budget is very difficult to answer. Over on Lonely Planets website there are dozens, if not hundreds, of posts dedicated to the topic. And that is just one resource. Despite reading as much online as we could, we still did not find as much information as we wanted. This blog is intended to be another resource and will hopefully answer questions we were not able to find answers to online. I will touch on some of the basics, but this blog t is geared towards those who have made the decision to go to the islands and to go on a cruise. It is our story of our cruise hunt and the lessons we learned over a 3 week period ... read more

Saturday 1st October The week has flown and boy are we pleased to be back on dry land! We had quite a few choppy afternoons and nights and as a result I felt better laying on my back in my cabin. The days were fabulous though and its on this that we will focus :-) Our first day we boarded the Millenium Catamaran. Samuel picked us up at the airport and then took us back to the boat in zodiac. We had a nice little cabin with twin beds and a small balcony. I do mean small as only one plastic chair fits on it and if you sit on the chair you cant see over the top. We've met a great bunch of people and they have already been on board for 6 nights. John ... read more

So we have flown today to Baltra Island in the Galapagos, and from there caught a bus to the ferry, which really only transports you across the river, and then to another bus to Puerto Ayora which is about 50 mins away. This place is gorgeous. It reminds me a little of Inverloch 20 years ago, but with a little more charm. There are lots of nice restaurants and the pier area is nicely decked out and covered with little marine Iguana's! The rocks below are dotted with orange and red crabs called Sally Lightfoot that also run up and down the walls with the Iguana! Our hotel doesnt have a name yet because it isnt finished or approved by the tourism board, but it is really nice, and operates above the Galapagos Deli where they ... read more

Puerto Ayora er byen ... read more

Our transport to the airport was the hostel owners beaten up old shagin’ wagon. Didn’t feel the safest of rides, especially as we knew he was up until 3am at least, drinking and then took us to the airport at 6am. But like all our uncertain journeys, somehow we make it. Check-in at the airport was quite intense, not only were there security checks like normal procedure but you have to pay for all sorts of national park fees, quarantine fee, park tax etc. and then have our bags fumigated in case we were carrying something onto the Galapagos that would be harmful to the ecosystem. Surprised they let either of us in to be honest. It was quite a bumpy flight but it was over in less than 2 hours where we arrived at Baltra ... read more

Day 12. March 19, 2011: Puerto Ayora, San Cristobal, Quito Puerto Ayora, San Cristobal We spent the night on the boat in the port, and woke up early to get ready to depart. We brought our luggage out to the pangas, then headed in to see Lonesome George at the Darwin Research Center. Lonesome George is the last remaining tortoise from the island of Pinta. He was discovered in 1971 and they have been trying to get him to reproduce with any tortoise to try to keep a part of the Pinta line alive. He is like a gazillion years old and just isn't interested. We also saw baby tortoises that they keep until they are old enough to release back to their native island (they use unique numbers on their shell to keep track). Then ... read more
