Once again we voyaged across the rough seas to get away from “city life” for a weekend at Isabella. This time, we stayed with our Isabella volunteer friends, Heather and Daniel. Being able to cook our own meals strangely felt like a luxury! The goal of this weekend trip was to take the “shit your pants boat ride” to los tuneles. Heather had gone on this day trip before and said that it was amazing, but one of the scariest things she has ever done. Los tuneles, is a difficult area to get to, which is why it can be scary. It is about a 45 minute boat ride from the main dock in Isabella. Once you arrive to the area, your boat essentially has to surf the waves into the shallows waters of los tuneles. ... read more

ガラパゴスの島々にはそれぞれの特徴がある。 最初に行ったイザベラ島は面積は一番大きいけれど一番開発が進んでいない 「素朴」という言葉が一番似合う島だ。 道端をあるいていてもみなニコニコして「こんにちわ」と声をかけてくれる。 スリの多い都市キトで若干緊張していた私達も、ガラパゴスに足を踏み入れて３日もすると のーんびりとした空気に包まれてなんとも居心地が良くなってきた。 居心地の良さのもうひとつの秘密はエクアドル料理。 来てはじめてしったのだがエクアドルでは米が主食で食事はたいてい ライス＋肉か魚のグリル＋サラダやアボガド、バナナのあげたもの、豆のつけあわせだった。 素朴だが意外と口に合う。そして何より果物が多くとれるエクアドルでは 毎日絞りたてのジュースがセットででてくるのがうれしい。 マンゴー、パイナップル、グアバ、トロピカルフルーツなど、今日は何の果物だろう？と味を当ててみるのが楽しい。 イザベラ島３日目。 朝は民宿の前のビーチを散歩していると魚を食べているイグアナにであう。全長１メートルくらいの イグアナが食べるよこで、びみょーな距離でじーっとおこぼれをまっている鳥。 イグアナは気温の高い昼にならないとめったに動かないのだけれど、食べるときはやっぱり別なのだろう。 がつがつ食べる様子は恐竜みたいだ。 まずは「涙の壁」という元米軍基地に囚人がつくった石の壁を見に行った。 ガラパゴス諸島はつい100年くらい前まではなーんにもない島で、本土から囚人が送られてくる場所としても 使われていたらしい。第２次世界大戦時には日本軍からパナマ運河を守る米軍の拠点として 使われたという。住人が住みだしたのはつい最近のこと。赤道直下の国らしく強い日ざしが ジリジリと照り続ける。一面サボテンの草原が続き人が住むには過酷な環境にみえる。 ここに２００年前に来てひたすら動物達を観察し、進化論を生み出したダーウィンの情熱に脱帽してしまう。 汗をだらだらかきながら島を一望できるところにのぼる。青い空、青い海、草原、本当に自然の島そ... read more

Sierra Negra Volcano boasts having the second largest, widest, volcano in the world. The crater is perched atop Isabela Island in the Galapagos archipelago. The track leading to the cater is a few miles long, and instead of walking it, through the clouds and mud, we rode horse back. I am not in the least afraid of horses or the thought of galloping along atop the back of an animal, but it has been at least ten years since I last was on a horse. While the posture and commands came back naturally, the act itself made me doubt my physical endurance and ruggedness.
