My last day in Ecuador, I decided to take a day excursion to Cotopaxi. It was close enough to Quito, and I was rather curious about this volcano. I was really excited about getting up close and personal with a volcano, even though there were no lava streams flowing down the sides. On a clear day in Quito, you can see Cotopaxi. It reaches a height of 19,347 feet, and is the second highest summit in Edcuador. Little did I know that Ecuador has plenty of volcanoes (some active, others dormant). On our way, we stopped to take photos, before the clouds would move in. The snow and ice made this mountain majestic. We also got to see Illiniza which is a twin volcano, and is inactive. Our first stop was at Saquisili Market. It is ... read more

After a 2 hour journey in the back of a jeep we arrived at probably one of the nicest places we´ve been to so far. Our accommodation was officially called a hostel but as Vicki said, it felt more like we were invited into this family´s home for a few days. Called the Secret Garden Cotopaxi, it is owned by an Aussie guy and his Ecuadorian wife. They also own the hostel we stayed in in Quito and the advertisements for Cotopaxi were such a draw that we decided to give it a crack and in no way were we disappointed. Tarquin (I know!) started the Secret Garden in Quito and it went so well that himself and his wife were able to pursue their dream of opening and living in a place in such a ... read more

From the Andes to the Pacific coast From Baños we passed through Ambato Province into Cotopaxi Province, named after a volcano there which I had seen from Quito. Cotopaxi, in the Andes, is the second highest peak in Ecuador and one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. It has an almost symmetrical cone with a neat arch at the summit and it's this shape that gives it the name Cotopaxi meaning 'neck of the moon'. Early on in the trip up to the Andes I began to feel unwell. I had sharp pains in my stomach and a couple times on the journey along the winding mountain roads I had to get Omar to pull over rather suddenly. It's possible I had caught a stomach bug at the baths in Baños the night before ... read more

Hola again!! OK here goes the final blog entry and this really is going to be a short one because ive been sat in the internet cafe for an eternity now! :o( .... A group of us from the hostel got the bus to Cotopaxi (Patricia and I nearly bought some puppies on the way as there was a box of them, they were adorable and being sold for $5!!) and ended up going straight to the festival in town/mountains as it was their yearly festival and everyone from the hostal was already there! The festival was very funny mainly because the whole town (which was tiny!) was insanely drunk and the dancing was well under way (apart from a short break when the stage collapsed, the band fell through the wooden boards and the music ... read more

This past weekend we traveled an hour outside of Quito to the avenue of volcanoes. We were literally dropped off on the side of the freeway and following the directions we were given by the travel agency, we walked about a half mile up a dirt road, in the middle of no where and we found our hostel Papa Gayo. It is this really cute red farm house getaway, with stables, farm animals, including lamas, sheep, ducks, pigs and horses. There is also pastures where they grow food for the animals and the people staying at the hostel. They have a little disco tech in the back and a jacuzzi and comfy couches next to the fire. We got there on Thursday night and after a tour of the grounds we read and hung out and ... read more

Greetings Lovelies! Sorry for being a little late on the blog action this week and for having no pictures for the last entry. Two weeks ago, I was in a hurry and thus an idiot and accidentally left my memory stick with all of the pictures from my trip in the internet cafe. When I returned 4 hours later it was long gone (thank goodness I posted some on this blog!). Thus, since then I have taken to sketching (smartest purchase since leaving the States: a box of miniature colored pencils) the scenes which I refuse to forget, or describing them in my journal, and thus have been taking less pics. Also, last week volunteering in some pretty rough neighborhoods, I left the camera with friends further North, and thus will have to describe what I ... read more

hopefully there will be some photos to go with this! went to mitad del mundo! the center of the world, was cool very interactive. there were lots of experiments to do such as watching water go straight down the plug hole! balancing an egg on a nail( much easier on the equator apparently)! watching men lose all their strenght when standing on the equator line as opposed to a meter either side of it. that was wierd you lose muscle resistance and weigh about 3 kilos less on the equator than anywhere else! there was lots of native stuff there too because obviously they realised the significance of the place a long time ago. we saw the last remaining genuine shrunken head left in ecuador and how to make one!! then i went up a volcano, ... read more

This famous trek from El Tambo (near Papallacta) is being described as one of the most beautiful treks in Ecuador. And I must admit it was special. And I was lucky with the weather. While on the first day it was still foggy, the weather cleared when we were just in front of Antisana, and it was amazing when its snowy face, towering above Laguna Santa Lucia, opened just when we were sitting there for a break. And above all, a couple of huge condors were circling high above. The next morning was even more amazing. After a freezing cold night everything was covered in frost, but the sky was blue...bluer...bluest, as I had never seen it in Ecuador before. And on the one side there was the mighty snow-covered Antisana and on the other side ... read more

After the Galapagos trip we returned to Quito for two nights out on the town sampling some quality red wine, Tapas, traditional ecuadorian food and cocktails. I decided to book a tour to Cotopaxi National parkwith Gullivers travels after a couple of recommendations. Cotopaxi (5897m) is one of the highest active volcanoes in the world. Its last eruption was in 190. The land around it has tundra like vegetation, wild horses roaming around and the air is very thin at 3500m ! After an early 7.00am start it took around two hours to get to the National park where the guide recommended we purchase some gloves and hats as it gets really cold up at the refuge. The bus then took us to the Museo Mariscal Sucre where there are lots of maps of the park ... read more
