Day 751 (19.04.09) Our adventure to Cotopaxi was to start at a leisurely pace with a tasty market brekkie and a bit of CD burning. We had teamed up with a couple from Holland who were going the same way and opted for a bus and taxi to our home for the next couple of days, the Secret Garden in the foothills of Volcano Cotapaxi. With a little pallaver in terms of meeting the taxi driver (where our instructions were to meet by the horse statue on the roundabout ... found the horse statue but no roundabout in sight) we made it along the bumpy cobbled road to the hostel. Our first impressions were that this eco-hostel was going to be a great place to stay. Warm and welcoming it felt like a home from home ... read more

Thursday and Friday (April 9 and 10) were vacations from school because of Semana Santa, so Nicole, Troy, and I took advantage of the days off to climb Cotopaxi! It is a volcano south of Quito, the second highest in Ecuador at 5897 meters, 19,347 feet. Almost as high as Denali but definitely not as difficult! Wednesday evening we took a bus to Quito, had some dinner (a Thai restaurant!!!) and then went to bed. Thursday morning after an amazing pancake breakfast (they have every kind of food in Quito!) we went to the Moggely Climbing office to pick up our gear and meet our guide. We got everything loaded up and then jumped in Jaime's car (our guide) and started towards Cotopaxi. We had lunch at the company's hostel just outside of the park and ... read more

Uf oepe 5650 m.ue.M. han ig leider muesse ufgaeh. YEEEAAA!! Whilst in my first week at spanish school I was talking to a Norwegian guy about what he did on his weekend. "I climbed a volcano with my friend who is a guide," he was telling me whilst we had a cup of tea and munched down the free bread that they provided for us at morning tea. "It was horrible weather, very tough and not much of a view at the top because of the weather. But I would do it again." This guy was crazy...he would do it again?? "I will check it out," I told him in a blase kind of way. I had just arrived in Quito the previous week and was still adjusting to the 2850m altitude, so climbing a 5897m volcano seemed quite out of my reach at that stage. ... read more

Andean Ecuador - From Cotopaxi down to Vilcabamba Sometimes I wonder if Im actually in Scotland and not in Ecuador at all. The scenery here is gorgeous - dramatic isolation and quite spookily barren in places, very Scottish, and some parts of would even remind you a bit of Ireland. That is, apart from the fact that every time you try to climb a few steps or a go up a wee hill your lungs fail to work properly and your heart feels like its about to burst through your ribcage. Altitude and me are not friends! The further south you go, the more beautiful it becomes and the more 'South American' it feels - the jungle aside, of course. After Sani Lodge, we headed to Cotopaxi, an active volcano about 1.5 hours south of Quito. ... read more
