Let's go to Tolima Hey, my friends, I haven't written for a long while but I have been travelling, this time I visited what is called the Musical Capital of Colombia, Ibagué, just in the centre of my country, near the Andes, and some of its nearby villages.
The city, founded by the Spanish Andres Lopez Galarza is the headquarters for the main political, art and cultural institutions of the Tolima department. Mind this city, as its infrastructure and business ventures are ranked at the top of our country, in such a way that according to Wikipedia, the World Trade Center Association, the city, along with Cali and Bogota, was chosen for international fairs given its economic plans and potential for doing business and investments.
I have to say that after this introduction, I did miss everything for I didn't see that much to have the same perception, on the contrary, I thought that given the closeness to our country's capital, only 3 hours as well as from the coffee zone, the city was underdeveloped and I didn't find much to do.
That´s right, my friends, I suppose the
reason was that I travelled during the holy week and I couldn't even see the Conservatorio del Tolima which has coined the name for the city as the Musical Capital of Colombia. although you can say that I have no excuse as I could've visited other places such as the Botanical Gardens but hey, I've visited too many gardens and they are roughly the same, sorry.
I thought even the shopping malls such as Multicentro lack that capital touch, although I heard that they have invested tons of money in high technology, I must say that it didn't feel like it when I went there. Let's hope that the changes continue as I was told.
Was it entirely my fault? It is true also that I did not do what many people do when they go to Ibagué, I didn't trek or make use of the closeness to the Nevado del Tolima to admire the beauty of the Tolima's mountains. Now that I think, I could've climbed the snowy mountain, it seems that the waterfalls there are mesmerising, well, maybe next time. What is clear is that the beautiful places have
A bit of the little music I saw at the Musical capital of Colombia
Which is understandable as I travelled during the holy week and the Conservatory was closed to be found outside the city, I heard that places such as Tierra Caliente are really worth staying in.
At 4 hours by bus from Bogotá on good highways, the safe city enjoys a beautiful weather, 23 degrees celsius most of the time, and I guess, if you are looking for a quite place, without stress for hanging out and relaxing, this is the right spot to choose from. Therefore, it offers the friendliness of a seaside resort as most people are laidback, friendly and willing to give you information about the city.
"Is there anything I can see in Ibagué? well…"
Hehehe, an anecdote, trying to find something nice to see, i asked a native and he said, well, have you been to the park? and I said yes, so then, you have to go to Carrefour, it is still open. And I went: Ok, thanks. It was easier to get information about accommodation, which was okay, I found two hotels for two different nights, Bellavista on 19th Avenue and Acandi on Carrera 3
Or else, you can look out for Ibague's annual folk festival, a festival
Catedral Primada de Ibagué
I read that this church was built thanks to Monseñor Rodríguez in 1930 who almost paid the entire costs. that has existed for more than 50 years so you might as well like it, I heard it is quite good. If you happen to read this entry these days, it seems that the carnival is taking place right now, the Fiestas de San Juan are there for you to enjoy, those beauty contests, where you will see lovely couples dancing to their most typical dancing song: EL Sanjuanero, which I did dance plenty of times at school. yeah... good souvenirs.
But on the other hand, it is also true that the city is quite safe, not too many people so that you visit while being relaxed, there you find the warmth of its 500,000 inhabitants that matches well the peacefulness of the places; after all people are on holidays to enjoy what they do and not to be stressed, right?
What´s sure is that you´ll find symbols of music everywhere! and that is nice. Well, that´s why, I thought that there would´t be a better way to finish this up than by copy-pasting Ibague´s hymn for you:
Al aire de una guabina
mi voz hoy te quiere cantar; en una montaña tendida mil versos me inspiras, Ciudad musical Tus calles bordadas de flores son marco de un tiple cantor Un dueto con su serenata Me embriaga y me atrapa en tus noches de amor Ibagué, Señora del atardecer Cuando tu brisa corre por mi piel perfuman tus ocobos. Es tu sol de primavera un remanso en mi carrera;
…Tierra bendita
