When we found ourselves in the small colonial town of Barichara in the heartland of Columbia, we were so utterly charmed by the friendly atmosphere and scenic setting that we decided to stay a week longer than planned (really sticking to the plan of no plan!). Barichara is a photographer´s dream. Set high on a sloping hillside, whitewashed buildings line stone-paved narrow streets. The red roof t... Read Full Entry

Barichara sounds wonderful. The photos are great.I would love to visit in Holy Week one day.I've never seen The Passion of Christ as I'm sure it would upset me but if it sent James to sleep twice perhaps I should watch it !Miss you both, looking forward to meeting up in Rio.

Hi We are in Columbia for 3 weeks this Easter, visiting friends who live in Bogata. We are planning a trip to Barichara but it sounds as if we should aim to be there for Easter. Can you recommend a guest house/backpackers. Thank you Rachel

ACCOMODATIONS RECOMENDATIONS
Hi Rachel, We stayed in Posada Chia-Ty. It was a small basic guest house just one block away from the main square, a lovely friendly family run place. We had a double room with private bathroom for 30,000 pesos. No breakfast but having on-site the best 3-course set lunch in all of Barichara (usually about 4,000 pesos) made up for it! FYI almost opposite was a fruit place that did the great fruit salads with granola and yoghurt or ice cream. I don't think there are any backpacker hostels in Barichara. On the main square there was a place called Aposentos which was in the lonely planet guide (sa on a shoestring) but since that had been published the price had gone up dramatically, they told us a room would cost 80,000 pesos. Hope you enjoy your time in Barichara, we certainly did! Just drop us a line if there you have any other questions. All the best, Jess and James
