We made a difficult decision to leave Rincon towards Santa Marta involving our first all day bus ride in Colombia. Santa Marta was merely a stopping point for a nights rest and to equip ourselves for camping in Tayrona National Park. Our hostal overbooked so we were put in the reluctant neighbour’s spare bedroom. They were clearly not thrilled with us being forced on them by the hostal owner, but they were still nice enough. Becky was still suffering from a dodgy tummy she now realised was a side effect of the amoxicillin she was taking for her chest infection. Nevertheless, she decided she was up for hiking and camping, so off we went with 8 litres of water and enough tuna and bread for 3 days. The walk to our campsite at Los Cabos passes ... read more

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jEPJ4FYwRVo Arrived by bus from Santa Marta. Similar to the crowded market. Amusement park vibes. Endless walk in humid condition. Destination reached, sigh of relief. Only to be spoiled by the herd. Invisible in a sea of bodies. Disruptive energy led to departure. Serenity under canopies. Cleansed of human stench. Middle ground. Last stop, all alone. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xpOcP4XosmI... read more

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LRrDLqboCvQ Santa Marta I stayed a Hostel Mangoes. It wasn't very welcoming. I had the dorm room to myself. The shower was pretty side alley next to the house with cheap wall coverings. I didn't feel very comfortable taking shower there, but did it anyways. The people that worked there were not very friendly. Except for the girl and the darker guy with tattoos. I had great seafood stew. It reminded me of Gumbo. Minca I visited Minca for a couple of days. I didn't book a hostel and just simply followed the road after the shuttle dropped me off. It was hot and I had all my equipment on me. For some reason I keep pushing forward, not knowing whether there would be anything ahead. Then to my surprised I noticed a small sign on ... read more

In December I went with my wife in taganga, it is a good place to rest, its nearby beaches are quiet and cold water because of the proximity to the Sierra Nevada. The prices of hotels and food are cheap compared to Cartagena, recommended site. In taganga I found diving schools and tour to nearby beaches.... read more

South America » Colombia » Santa Marta April 30th 2017

Geo: 11.2508, -74.2061Last night we went through some rough sea and strong wind that woke me up a couple of times. Although Philip and I had left our Fitbits on the desk, I had to hide them away, because the rolling motion of the ship activated them, and their green lights kept blinking. We made it through the night and woke up before the alarm went off.The ship docked in Santa Marta by 7 a.m., and Phil got up early to get online and check the status of his class and look for messages from students. He was able to get a lot of work done before we left the ship for the shore excursion. We took a half-day tour that went to the 16th century Santa Marta Catedral, which claims to be the oldest cathedral ... read more

Note to self - Do not try to book transport during a South American holiday week where no one has to go to work and the entire country is traveling. So my plan was to book a night bus to San Gil which left me with an entire day to kill in Santa Marta. I did this the best way I know how, by finding a local tienda with a chair outside where I could sit in the sun and listen to the loud music emanating from the establishment. After about 1 hour or so the locals, curious as to why I was there, invited me to their table for a few drinks. These guys were great and they quickly shared all of their wares with me including Colombia's finest. Things were good. Hours later and ... read more

Note to self - Do not go to a National Park during a South American holiday week where no one has to go to work. I went to Parque Tayrona in hopes of hanging out on the beautiful beaches for 2 days or so by renting a hammock and setting up camp. In the morning I went to the grocery store and loaded up on fruits, water, and sandwich material which were to be my supplies for the trip. I then walked to the bus terminal and waited for the bus to arrive for transport to Parque Tayrona. There were quite a few of us waiting around and when the bus pulled in it was total chaos. There are no lines down here nor any concept of first come first serve. It is every man for ... read more

South America » Colombia » Santa Marta » Ciudad Perdida April 1st 2016

Ciudad Perdida, or The Lost City is the ancient political and manufacturing capital of the Tairona people. This site is believed to have been founded around 800 A.D. I read that this is about 650 years before Machu Picchu in Peru which to me is pretty impressive. Not much is known about the Tairona civilization, but they were expert craftsmen that made beautiful and intricate gold ornaments and jewelry. Something I have seen in the various gold museums in Colombia. This probably led to their demise once the Spanish arrived. The Ciudad Perdida is thought to have been abandoned by the Tairona during the Spanish conquest in the 17th Century. I was to go there and see it for myself. One four night, five day guided tour including food and water - $335. One pair Merrell ... read more

Quick post about the past few days before I leave for the Lost City and the isolation of the jungle. I'll have no Internet or any connection to "the grid" for about 5 days. So, friends Michael (Swiss) and Amis from Cartagena arrived into Santa Marta along with Mitzy and Michael (Holland). The latter two I had no idea were coming and it was a great surprise. I was ecstatic to see them all including my English buddy Richard who had made his way back from his trek to the Lost City and it was nice to again be surrounded by friends. We once again had a crew although sorry to say we were minus our better part; the fantastic Canadian Amy. Nothing really new to report. I've just been hanging at the beach in Taganga ... read more
