After another incredibly mediocre breakfast (translation : we taste some of it) we spend the morning walking around the town. Our goals, once more, are to call our daughter in Israel, and mail a postcard. You would think these to be realistic goals, and youd be wrong. We fail hopelessly on both fronts agreeing it must surely be easier in Cartagena, our next destination. Its a beautiful day and the water looks magnificent, but we can swim. Yesterday, while at Johnny Cay, Benjy, our son, suddenly started chafing and hurting from the sea water. It happened a year earlier in Honduras and we didn give it much further thought, but here we are 50 meters from the most incredible water you can imagine, and we e walking around luggage and duty free stores. We went from ... read more

We fly early from Bogota to San Andres island. It's very straightforward, no hitches, so all my worries the day before were unnecessary. Bogota airport is busy but organized with lots of coffee and doughnut kiosks. For some reason someone feels it's a good idea to stock up on doughnuts before flying, but we resist that particular temptation. There are numerous security checks - my theory is that with a semblance of peace in the country, the government must find something for all the soldiers to do ( many seem to hang around the streets of Bogota, not really appearing to do much, but make tourists like us feel safe) and before the gate, the airline attendants actually collect boarding passes which they then give back to you at boarding time. it's an odd system but ... read more

This place is one of the most beautiful places I've been to. Definitely the most beautiful Caribbean spot I've seen. We just loved it! San Andres is an island that is closer to Nicaragua, but is considered Colombian territory. The people of the island are English speaking Africans, who are considered to be natives, and Spanish speaking Colombians. For years the natives have been trying to gain independence from Colombia. We spoke with several friendly natives and they sound defeated when they talked about it. Nicaragua and Colombia have a history of fighting for the territory. Unfortunately, there is a lot of poverty on the island, but the overall feel of the island is very upbeat. We decided to stray from our usual budget hostel stay and we stayed at the Aquarium (one of the Decameron ... read more

For a political cartographer, the island of San Andrés is Colombia. For some nicaragüenses, it’s Nicaragua, part of an archipelago unfairly allotted to Colombia by a 1928 treaty which Nicaragua claims was signed under duress during U.S. occupation of the Central American country. And for a tribunal in The Hague currently dealing with the dispute, it is… to be decided. The archipelago - which also includes the islands of Providencia and Santa Catalina, as well as a number of islets, cays and sand banks - is located in the Caribbean, approximately 720km from the Colombian coast and 220km from Nicaragua. Early inhabitants included Puritans and pirates, Jamaican slaves, and Spanish, British, Dutch and French colonists. North American Baptists brought their beliefs to San Andrés in the 19th century, along with the wood from Alabama which was ... read more

El Aquario is national protected wildlife area. It’s two very small islands in the middle of the ocean that are connected through a sandbar. We woke up early and ate breakfast; breakfast is a buffet style all you can eat. After breakfast out tour guide was waiting. He directed everyone to follow him he was going to take us to where the boats where launched. The place where the boats are launch is guarded by gates inside the gates there’s wooden benches to the left with people sitting down. And vendors to the right selling water shoes, and snorkel gear. We took a seat amongst the many sitting down. Soon enough there was many walking through the isle selling beaded necklaces, and bracelets ‘’yelling courtesy look.’’ After about half hour of sitting there stair at the ... read more

Andes is another small town, that surrounds Medellin. My dad was born there, and my cousin sandra's family lives there. In Andes her family has serval coffee farms. We left with Beatriz, sandra's mom early saturday august 11, towards Andes. The road to Andes has serval pot holes, and it's not fully paved. There was also sections were we had to wait for several minutes while people cleared the road, because rocks from the mountain fell along the road, and blocked traffic. Arrving in Andes we were immediately greeted by Beatrìz' dad, wh invited us to take a seat in the towns park. The park is the center of the town, more or less the place everyone hangs out. On the top there is a chruch and along the sides there are tables and chairs. it ... read more

Here are pictures from my trip to San Andres Isla. The island is actually next to Nicaragua but is claimed to belong to Colombia. This island is a relaxing get away for Colombianos (sort of like Hawaii is to the US). The people are so friendly. You will hear Spanish and Patwa (spelling error?) and see some really amazing ladies that vacation from Medellin, Calli, and Baranquilla.... read more
