After a big night Chris and I slept in for a bit trying to get to coffee country today will be a tall task, we checked out and took the bus to Armenia, we wer surprised to find out it will take 6 hours to get there, Luis my friend said only 4 hours, liar! it was a small bus and our seat is next to the toilet and it stunk. The roads are windy and the kids in the bus are throwing up. Occasional wafts of smelly toilet and a/c that barely worked was too much for a 6 hour trip. We had a break halfway and had lunch, i had a delicious fried mojarra fish and guanabana juice, very filling and quite tasty. Arrived in Armenia on a dark rainy eve, we noticed horses ... read more

Hola! Well I have had a crazy week in Southern Colombia. On my way to Salento (a cute colonial style town famous for coffee, cowboys and trout) I sat beside a beautiful young Colombian girl who did not speak English, but when she found out that I was travelling by myself she decided to take me to meet her friends, two of who could speak perfect English. I spent the afternoon walking around the town which was packed with Sunday Colombian tourists and I had a new fruit juice - Guanabana, absolutely delicious with milk. The next day I did a tour of the coffee farm owned by the hostel I was staying at - the Plantation House. Colombian coffee is so renowned because they only grow Arabica beans (more flavour, less caffeine); apparently it would ... read more

Despite traveling to 3 different areas, I had yet to take a long-distance busride in Colombia. Well, that all changed when Adam and I started our journey into Colombian coffee country! Naturally, Adam and I were running late for the bus to Armenia that we had planned to take. As we jog into the terminal, we are greated by literally every single bus company shouting at us in the hopes that we would make our travels plans with their company. It was truly a crazy scene! The next 7 hours were spent going up, down, left and right through the mountains. As the crow flys, Armenia is not that far. Only problem is that the crow can fly directly over the mountain whereas our bus (unfortunately) cannot. After another bus from Armenia, Adam and I finally ... read more

Our journey in to the coffee region was a long one, but well worth the trip. We were on the overnight from Bogota, this time we had a blanket that Deb had bought to keep us warm and it definitely did the job. The bus went over a mountain range of the Andes so it was very much a slow paced bus. Up an then down, and the rising sun on the way down also brought the towns of the coffee region below in to view, in Armenia we caught the colectivo bus to Salento. Salento is a much smaller town than the other coffee towns of Armenia and Manizales so we decided on Salento. It is a nice attractive town, very small but set in lush green and there is a lookout at the top ... read more

Monday morning we headed off early to Bogota’s main bus station, through some different neighbourhoods which were more suburban and more familiar to us. Very unlike the dusty chaos of the central area near where we were staying. Our bus journey started at 9am and lasted almost 8 hours, with only a 20 min break for lunch. It was exhausting to say the least, although Amy seemed to cope really well with it. Once we got out of Bogota, the landscape was beautiful, through the mountainous Andes, through plains and over rivers. At times it was a bit terrifying (for Fee anyway) looking over the shear drops from the side of the road. We changed at Armenia, straight on the next bus to Salento, only a short 50 min hop away. Salento is a pretty, rustic ... read more

Salento is a small town, population of about 3,500 people, in the Zona Cafeteria. You guessed it, the area which they grow coffee. Being a coffee lover, this was a must see place on my trip around Colombia. From Medellin, it would be a five hour coach journey through the Zona Cafeteria, climbing mountains, speeding down mountain roads to Armenia, and then it would be another hour by local bus to Salento. I met a group of travellers from the UK, Rory, Jimmy, Leonie, Katie and Leila from my hostel in Medellin and all decided to head down together. Well, Rory and Jimmy only decided 20 mins before we were due to leave. I tried to book us into a place called the Plantation House in Salento, which is the main backpacker hostel in the region. ... read more

We had two options - a thirty minute jeep ride at 7.30am or a three hour walk. It was a no brainer. Out came the boots. Yes, I would rather walk for three hours than get up early. Even missing the jeep, we still left Salento the wrong side of nine o´clock for my liking. And so we walked, winding down from Salento into the Valle de Cocora. After the steep twisty descent we crossed the Rio Quindio and made our way along country lanes lined with eucalyptus trees. Halfway to Cocora, a young lad was herding about ten calves down the lane behind us. James used his farming instinct and correctly pointed ahead at the field the cows were heading towards. The lad nodded. How James knew which one beats me - there seemed to ... read more

After finishing The Lost City treck we decided it was time for some R & R and headed for Parque National Tyrona on the carribean coast. Our time there mainly consisted of relaxing by the beach, snorkelling on coral reefs, cooking by the campfires and sleeping in hammocks. Before long we felt rejuvenated and hit Taganga, a Caribbean diving town with a party atmosphere. Dave took the opportunity to head out for a couple of dives at the nearby coral reef, while I chilled on the beach enjoying fruit smoothies. Luckily our stay coincided with the weekly beach rave located in a small bay reached only by boat. Our next stop was the historic town of Cartagena, which had some beautiful colonial buildings. We spent some time wondering around the old town and wandering the city ... read more

Day 726 (25.03.09) Having had some more leisurely starts to our days it came as a bit of a shock when we got up for the 7.30am jeep from Salento out to Cocora for another day of walking. With its huge, lanky looking rubber palms and stunning walking it is an obvious and not to be missed days walking if you're in the area and we set off excited for more exercise and fresh air. Cramming 12 (not including the driver) onto our jeep which has seats for only 6 we ended up with Mark on the roof and many more hanging onto the back and sides of the jeep. We took the stunning 20 min drive out to the start of the walk where with all the passengers getting off you could almost hear the ... read more
