Folklore, tourism and relaxation, that´s Chinácota, the place to be off line for a few days, only if you want!
Folclor, turismo y relajación, eso es lo que es Chinácota, el lugar para desconectarse de todo por algunos días, bueno... sólo si lo desea.
Indeed, going to Chinácota is like thinking of escaping from stress, anxiety and hard work. Don´t we all need that? On the way from Cucuta (Only 38 kms, translated into a 45-minute drive from the capital, or one hour by bus, at only 7,000 pesos, that is 2 dollars) and driving through a landscape of huts and lots of green, you will soon enjoy a pleasant climate and beautiful sights. Once you get into the village, you can taste some of the great snacks, like fresas con crema: Strawberries and Cream, or you can ask for the famous cucas con queso (pastry with cheese) or cachapas, which are like arepas and also a big variety of milk deserts or a melcocha which is even tastier than marshmellows; whatever you want, you find it at the small shops as a way to making the trip even shorter. That´s right, ask the cucuteños, who will tell you
that once they decide to vehemently fight the heat, they come to this village for a change of scenery.
Es verdad... ir a Chinácota es como pensar en un descanso fuera del estrés, la ansiedad y el trabajo duro. ¿No necesitamos todos de eso? La encuentran en la carretera que va desde Cúcuta al interior del país (sólo 38 kms, lo que significa 45 minutos conduciendo desde la capital o si en bus, gastas una hora con un pasaje que vale 7000 pesos: eso es $2), y manejando en un paisaje lleno de cabañas y mucho verde, usted pronto disfrutará de un clima agradable y vistas bonitas. Una vez que lleguen, pueden saborear algunos pasabocas como fresas con crema o pregunte por las famosas cucas con queso o cachapas y una gran variedad de postres de leche o las sabrosas melcochas; lo que sea, lo encontrará en las pequeñas tiendas que ayudan a hacer el viaje más corto. Así es, pregúntele a los cucuteños, quienes les dirán que una vez que deciden luchar contra el calor intenso, vienen al pueblo chitarero por un cambio de paisaje y un poco de friíto.

In the village, located in a valley within the eastern Andes built in 1533 probably by Spanish Christians, there are remains of colonial construction; some of the buildings have been compared to andaluz houses.
En el pueblo, localizado en un valle de la cordillera Oriental, construido en 1533 seguramente por españoles, se encuentran restos de construcciones coloniales; algunos edificios han sido comparados con casas andaluces.
Around 20 degrees Celsius, you can forget about the hot days of Cucuta and plunge yourself into a mixture of hot and high peaks resulting in a very temperate climate.

Chinácota, with its 15,000 inhabitants who happily live in the built-up area, used to be a simple village but given its diversified architecture and geographical contrasts, its neighbours didn´t want to waste the chance to spend some lovely days while enjoying the lovely weather and once the demand was there, the building of country
hotels started. The name comes from a tool used by the Chitareros -that is the Indigenous people from the region- to drink guarapo.
Esta localidad de casi 15.000 habitantes, solía ser simplemente un pueblo pero dada su arquitectura diversa y sus contrastes geográficos, sus vecinos no quisieron dejar pasar la oportunidad de pasar algunos días formidables en un clima hermoso. Así una vez que empezó la demanda, se empezaron a construir los hoteles de campo. El nombre Chinácota viene de un utensilio usado por los indios chitareros para tomar guarapo y bebidas fermentadas de chicha.

In 1532, Ambrosio Alfinger, the ambitious and ruthless German conqueror arrived in the area in his thirst of gold and land and the european dream of El Dorado, attacked and killed part of the indigenous population; later, he was given a taste of his own medicine as the genocide he provoked caused his death; indeed, the fighting Chitareros -the indigenous people- managed to kill him with a poisoned spear; legend has it that the treasure he found is still lying near the colonial bridge,
exactly at the spot where the conqueror was killed, but nobody seems to have found the treasure. you can understand then why he is not consider founder of the village... In fact, there are no other historic traces of the foundation of Chinácota -please correct me if I am wrong- as some claim that the founders were Pedro de Ursúa and Ortun Velasco but what people seem to agree on is that the building of the municipality started in Pueblo Paja, which is located in the south of the village.
En 1532, Ambrosio Alfinger, el ambicioso despiadado conquistador alemán llegó al área y como estaba loco -como muchos foráneos- por su sed de oro y la ambición europea del Dorado, atacó y produjo matanzas en la población indígena; sin embargo, los indígenas le pagaron con su misma moneda pues el genocidio que provocó le causó su misma muerte; sí señor, ya que los guerreros Chitareros consiguieron matarlo con una lanza envenenada; se dice que logró encontrar su tesoro y que todavía se encuentra allí, cerca al puente construido durante la colonia, justo en el lugar donde mataron al alemán pero nadie ha hasta ahora encontrado el tesoro. Es entendible
que no lo consideren fundador, así que sin ninguna otra huella histórica, -me pueden corregir si me equivoco- algunos dicen que los fundadores de Chinácota fueron Pedro de Ursúa y Ortún Velasco; de lo que sí están seguros es que la construcción del pueblo empezó en Pueblo Paja, al sur de la localidad.
The park houses a statue of Ramón González Valencia, born in Chitagá and president of Colombia from 1909 to 1910, famous for returning peace to our country and forming the department of North of Santander in 1910. Normally, in Colombian villages the statue that you commonly find in the central parks is Simón Bolívar´s or here in our department, by default, that one of Santander; so I was a bit surprised as I expected to find any Chinacota´s personalities contributing to the creation of the village or at least some chitareros. Anyone could tell you that the reason they had built Gonzalez´s statue was that he was the first famous tourist in Chinacota, but there is more that meets the eye, according to an old gentleman who seems to know more than the few books you can find about it. In spite of not
being from the village, the president seemed to cherish Chinácota as it was in his abode, where he planned the fighting for the war of the 1,000 Days; the gentleman also told me that the Colombian peace treaty was signed there too, that was in 1902; therefore, it is understandable that there are plans to turn the Hacienda Iscalá into a history museum. On the other hand, apart from keeping the house where Gonzalez Valencia lived, Iscalá also had Bolívar staying there around 5 times, from 1820 and 1826.
El parque tiene una estatua de Ramón González Valencia, nacido en Chitagá, presidente de Colombia desde 1909 a 1910, quien fue famoso por devolverle la paz al país y contribuir a la formación del departamento del Norte de Santander en 1910. Normalmente, en los pueblos colombianos, la estatua que se encuentra en los parques es la de Simón Bolívar o aquí en nuestro departamento, por defecto, la del general Santander; entonces, me sorprendí un poco pues esperaba ver la estatua de alguna personalidad relacionada con los orígenes o al menos, de algunos guerreros chitareros. Cualquiera podría decir que la razón de encontrar la estatua de González es porque se le
considera el primer turista famoso en Chinácota, pero es un poco más complejo, de acuerdo a un señor oriundo de la ciudad, que parece saber más que los pocos escritos sobre el tema. A pesar de no ser del pueblo, al presidente le gustó el punto estratégico del pueblo pues fue en su casa adquirida aquí, la Hacienda Iscalá, donde planeó la lucha durante la Guerra de los 1000 Días; el señor también me contó que fue allí donde se firmó igualmente el tratado de paz en 1902. Por eso, es entendible que hayan planes para convertir su casa en un museo. De otro lado, aparte de conservar la casa de González Valencia, Iscalá también le dio posada a nuestro libertador quien estuvo aquí 5 veces, desde 1820 a 1826.
Places of Interest
Páramo de Mejué, Monumento de la Virgen de la Paz y por último, el Cerro de la Vieja, donde se dice que vivía una chica hermosa que bajaba al pueblo para recorrer las calles de Chinácota; ella cargaba una canasta de oro y volvía luego al cerro; lamentáblemente, unos foráneos le robaron los contenidos de su canasta en una de sus caminatas y
ahora se ha convertido en un lugar turístico para recorrer. Ahí tienen una historia para atraer turistas, pero más que eso para incentivar las caminatas, me parece sensacional!
Lugares de interés
At the Cerro de la Vieja (the Hag´s Hill) where there used to live a mesmerising girl who would go down to the village to stroll the streets of Chinacota; she would carry a basket of gold and would go back to the hills where she lived. it seems that in one of her trips, three foreigners stole the contents of her basket. There you have it, a story to attract tourists but find a hill to climb instead, that´s clever!
Built in the XX century
Although its main economic activity is the agricultural sector, notably its well organised economic cooperatives, it is true that in the last years, tourism has played a vital role owing to its beautiful landscapes adorned by amazing huts and summer houses to spend lovely weekends; in effect, the city has a good hotel infrastructure and around 3,000 huts built in different European and American styles, that provides more than basic services. And they are all furnished, ready
to be rented. Therefore, you can see small and big groups of people drinking good beer, practising sports or simply enjoying the big swimming pools that most huts have. On top of that, the exquisite gastronomy of its restaurants is sth to look forward to.
Aunque su principal actividad económica se encuentra en el sector agrícola, notablemente por sus cooperativas agrícolas bien organizadas, es verdad que en los últimos años, el turismo ha jugado un papel vital gracias a sus hermosos paisajes, que son adornados por las bonitas cabañas y casas de verano para pasar fines de semana sabrosos. En efecto, la ciudad tiene una buena infraestructura hotelera con sus 3000 cabañas, que se han construido con estilos americanos y europeos, que suministran servicios básicos, equipados y listos para que usted los rente. Así, se pueden ver grupos pequeños y grandes de personas tomando cervecera en los patios, practicando deportes o simplemente, disfrutando de las piscinas, que la mayoría de cabañas tiene. Aparte de esto, la gastronomía exquisita de sus restaurantes es algo a lo que se espera con impaciencia.
Iscalá
Santamaría is a sort of emblematic area in Chinacota, featured by the rustic balconies communicating houses
and its colonial streets. It is my favourite spot to eat milk deserts, there you find nice places to sit down, quiet and peaceful but mind you... it can get noisy during the festivities.
Santamaría es casi un emblema en Chinácota; se remarcan los rústicos balcones que comunican sus casas y sus calles coloniales. Allí podrá disfrutar de muy buenos postres de leche; me gusta esa calma que se respira allí, aunque les digo que puede ser ruidoso durante las fiestas.
Extreme Sports
Paragliding is a must in Chinacota, I mean, for those not suffering from vertigo. By the laughs of some students from San Luis Gonzaga I saw, you can tell that it is a hell of a experience, they were not frightened at all.
Parapente es algo que se debe hacer en Chinácota si usted no sufre de vertigo. Vi a algunos estudiantes que portaban camisetas del Colegio San Luis Gonzaga y por sus risas y conversaciones, se ve que es una experiensota, es más, no se les veía ni un gramo de miedo, algo increíble para este prójimo.
Casa de la Cultura Municipal
Here, you can learn
to play instruments and contribute to the enchantment of chinacoteros, who during the festivities, enjoy strolling the streets while listening to some rhythms played by villagers with their colourful guitars, bandolas and other musical instruments.
En la Casa de las Cultura Municipal, usted puede aprender a tocar diferentes instrumentos de cuerda y así contribuir al encanto de los chinacoteros, quienes durante las festividades, disfrutan el caminar en el parque, mientras que escuchan los ritmos del pueblo interpretados por guitarras, bandolas y otros instrumentos musicales.
Fiestas de San Nicolás
For almost 50 years, in these local festivities -taking place in september and now called "International Festivities of San Nicolas"- the village has welcomed thousands of tourists longing to spend big party times. The parades, imitating Barranquilla´s Carnival, are full of troupes, floats, and feature dancers of multiple folk rhythms. Moreover, People who are fond of the Spanish Corridas attend the Plaza de Toros San Nicolás, where they enjoy the performances of bullfighters famous in the country like Cesar Rincón and Gitanillo de América. Although I have never been there, it seems that this arena can be compared to other famous in the country, like the ones
in Manizales, Medellin and Bogota.
Durante casi 50 años, en estas festividades locales de septiembre y llamadas ahora "Ferias Internacionales de San Nicolás", el pueblo ha recibido miles de turistas que quieren pasar momentos agradables de rumba. Los desfiles que imitan al Carnaval de Barranquilla presentan comparsas, carrozas y bailarines de distintos ritmos folclóricos. Además, a los que son fanáticos de las corridas españolas, tienen una cita en la Plaza de Toros de San Nicolás, para disfrutar las faenas de los toreros famosos en el país como César Rincón y Gitanillo de América. Aunque nunca he estado allí, parece que esta arena se puede comparar en calidad con otras famosas en el país como las de Manizales, Medellin y la de Bogotá.
With a view to involving countryside people, Chinacota organises a beauty competition inviting girls from different country houses to take part, which adds to the distinct character of the festivities. Also, as for the national beauty competition, after the swimsuit contest at the Islavita hotel, Miss Norte de Santander is chosen and will travel to Cartagena in November. For the record, Norte de Santander has only been crowned Miss Colombia once, that was in
1963.
Con el fin de incluir la gente de las veredas, Chinácota organiza un concurso de belleza invitando a chicas de las veredas a hacer parte de esta competencia, lo que le añade un carácter único a las fiestas. También se elige a la Señorita Norte de Santander que irá a Cartagena para el reinado nacional y los desfiles en trajes de baño se hacen en el hotel Islavita. Se sabe que sólo una reina de este departamento se ha coronado Miss Colombia y eso ocurrió en 1963.
You can also find nice souvenirs like wooden objects such as locks, keyrings, kitchen tools, Colombian chivas and the like, all made from natural products featuring the inventive of its inhabitants. A place people advise to visit is Aroma Café. So, if you think you deserve a good break, you can always come.
Se pueden encontrar recuerdos bonitos hechos de madera como candados, llaveros, utensilios de cocina, chivas colombianas y mucho más, todo hecho de productos naturales que muestran la gran creatividad de los chitaremos. Un lugar que se puede aconsejar en Aroma Café. Entonces, si piensa que se merece un buen descanso, allí está el lugar.
Oops, I forgot, the road is being repaired so that the drive will be shorter, so if you want to claim Alfinger´s treasure, you might have to rush.
Se me olvidaba decirles que la carretera la están arreglando para que el recorrido sea mucho más corto, así que si quieren reclamar el tesoro de Alfinger, les va a tocar que se apuren.
