Our tour of Cartagena, Columbia was via a harbor cruise on this sunny New Years Eve afternoon.

We had an excellent guide who is convinced that their current president (he’s been in office about seven years) is doing a great job. Among the accomplishments of the president is an agreement with the United States that will result in the US establishing ten military bases in Columbia in 2010.

Our guide told us several times that Cartagena is no longer a drug haven. He may well be right but a beautiful yacht anchored in the bay bore the name “Double Haven”. Modern Cartagena is a clean city with new high rises and lots of boats in the marinas. Maybe the coffee business really is good these days.

Cartagena is very much a Caribbean city both by culture and geography. It was the major port used by the Spanish to export New World gold and emeralds and import African slaves to work the mines. We watched a performance of folk dances that had significant African influence.

Pictures are looking good. And now a lesson in politics---by the end of your trip I will be smart!!Enjoy, you sure look like you are having fun--tough life. On another note Miss Sarah will probably be spending a night or two with Lola the end of the month. I'll put my money on Lola---she'll kick ass. XXOODeb
