Cali, one of the most racial diversity cities in Colombia -if not the most- is located between sugarcane fields and huge mountains in the southwest of our country. Quite far from Bogota (9 hours) and the Caribbean coast (15 hours), which may be the reason for not being on the list of the most tourist places of Colombia. For ages, the Sucursal del Cielo, as it is proudly called, has been an important city to the lives of many Colombians; many international sport competitions have been hosted here: the PanAmerican Games in 1971, the 1992 World Wrestling Championships and the World Games in 2013. If you are a night lover, this is the right city to be, specially, on a Friday or saturday, when the heat of the day is gone, and you are about to be more outgoing, even if you are not, of course. To tell you the truth, you can´t escape all the heat at the very heart of the Colombian salsa. And ladies, be ready for the Ladies´Night, which attracts lots of locals in what´s been called the most party-going city of Colombia.

I thought this cat would be called the Pirate or sth like that, but no, it is Seven Livespor no decir, la más diversa, se encuentra entre cañadulzales y enormes montañas en el suroccidente del país. Muy lejos de Bogotá (9 horas) y la costa Caribe (15 horas), lo que puede ser la razón de no estar incluida en la lista de los lugares más turísticos de Colombia. Durante mucho tiempo, la Sucursal del Cielo, como se le llama con orgullo, ha sido una ciudad importante en la vida de muchos colombianos, especialmente en el deporte ya que fue la sede de los Juegos Panamericanos en 1971, del Campeonato Mundial de Lucha de 1992 y de los Juegos Mundiales en 2013. Si usted es amante de la noche, esta es la ciudad perfecta, especialmente, en un viernes o sábado, cuando ya el calor del día se ha ido, y el que se encuentre allí, se verá a si mismo, volverse extrovertido, si no lo es ya, claro. Para decirles la verdad: usted no puede escaparse de toda esa rumba justo en el corazón de la salsa colombiana. Y las chicas, estén listas para la Ladies´ Night que atrae a un montón de gente en lo que se ha llamado, la ciudad más fiestera de Colombia.
My trip Hehehehe, as the plane tickets were skyrocketing, I decided to go by bus and do you know how long it took me? well, as I travelled during the night, it took me 16h from Bucaramanga, that´s something, right?, I left at 9:00 pm and got there at 12:00 m; on the way back, as I travelled during the day, it took me two more hours: leaving at 9:00 am and getting home at 3:00 am. As I bought both tickets separately on the same Espresso Bolivariano bus company, it was funny to notice that the return ticket ($131,000) was more expensive than the single ($122,000) ride. A long ride might be boring for lots of people but I don´t mind it as far as I have a confortable to sleep in; well, the only thing was that I was awaken more than once by the driver´s little skill in handling the judder bars so I jumped a lot during my sleep.

algo grande, o no?, salí a las 9:00 pm y llegué a las 12:00 m; de vuelta, como viajé durante el día, fueron dos horas más: me fui a las 9:00 am y llegué a casa a las 3:00 am. Como me compré los dos tiquetes por separado en expreso Bolivariano, la misma empresa de autobuses, fue interesante notar que el billete de vuelta ($ 131,000) fue más caro que el de ida (122.000 pesos); la razón, la ignoro! En verdad, no me importa pasar tanto tiempo en el bus siempre y cuando pueda dormir durante el viaje, esta vez, la pasé despertándome porque el conductor no era el más diestro en el manejo de los policías acostados de la carretera, así que salté mucho durante mi sueño.
Anyway, the trip was most pleasant, I can´t complain about the legroom I had as you can see from one of my pictures. El viaje fue de lo más agradable, no puedo quejarme del espacio para las piernas pues tenía de sobra, como se puede ver en mis fotos. Me asignaron un asiento con ventana y como no llevaba compañero de viaje, entonces tenía dos asientos para mí, todo un lujo, debo decirlo. Por lo tanto, tuve el tiempo para probar diferentes posiciones de sentado y acostado en ese largo viaje. Y lo mejor era que el pasajero de atrás, era solo un niño, así que me pude reclinar libremente sin molestar a nadie.

I know Chileans and Argentinians also say the same about their own land and here too, Caleños think their city is the best... but in Cali, the pride of being born in the city, is also sung and repeated by the mere Caleños who boast about their beautiful landscapes, friendliness and diversity. Personally, I know this is undeniable as far as dancing is concerned but I gather, this
saying refers mostly to the lovely shade trees adorning the main streets, which might be a bit of an appetiser for the hiking trails proposed for the visitor.
Sé que los chilenos y argentinos también dicen lo mismo, que sus tierras son las mejores y aquí también; pero en Cali, este orgullo de haber nacido en la ciudad, se canta y se repite por las mismos Caleños que hacen alarde de sus hermosos paisajes, de su amistad y su diversidad. Personalmente, sé que son los mejores en lo que se refiere a bailar pero me imagino que con respecto a esta afirmación, están pensando en los frondosos árboles que adornan la ciudad, lo que podría ser como un aperitivo visual para las rutas de senderos propuestas para el visitante.

Algunos lugares con vistas a la ciudad son el Cerro de las Tres Cruces y el Cristo Rey; sin embargo, corre el rumor de que este último es uno de los lugares que se deben evitar si usted no está acompañado ya que es frecuentado por ladrones. También, he visto algunas fotos preciosas del zoológico, donde se encuentran animales autóctonos y muy exóticos.
The city offers bus tours or walking tours so that you experience a short visit to the main tourist venues, believe me, it won´t take you long and you might end up spending most of your time in a salsa club or a shopping mall as many people do. But the view of the city is nice, some churches are stunning, well... you might find a great many cement blocks which are a sore for good eyes. The old churches are nice to see, though.

y seguramente, terminará pasando la mayor parte de su tiempo en un club de salsa o un centro comercial como mucha gente lo hace. Pero la vista de la ciudad es agradable, aunque... usted puede ser que encuentre bastantes bloques de cemento que no son bonitos para la vista, pero bueno, qué ciudad no los tiene. Las viejas iglesias, esas si que son agradables.
The Walk of the Cats You can stroll along the banks of the Cali river to find stunning sculptures of cats which has somehow become one of the most visited venues of the city. Hernando Tejada a ceramist, is the main artist. Apart from the beauty of the sculptures and the pleasant walk, it was quite entertaining to read about the meaning of every name for every cat, like Calida, was a pun of words for warm and Calin, I love it; there are also, the Diva, the Prisioner, the scholar, quite original I thought.

Colombian Snow Cones or Shaved Ice with Fruit, delicious! ciudad. Hernando Tejada, un ceramista de la ciudad, es el artista principal. Aparte de la belleza de las esculturas y el bonito paseo, me pareció bastante entretenido y colorido leer los textos sobre el significado de cada nombre asignado para cada gato, como Calida, que viene de un juego de palabras en CALI y DA, lo que significa que da mucha calidez a la gente, como su ciudad. También están la Diva, la Presa, la inteligente, me pareció todo muy original.
Where to dance Cali offers plenty of places to dance and have fun, notably Sambacaramba, Cucalaloca, Chango, the only thing is that you ask Colombians which places are safer or if accompanied, you can wonder at La Sexta to make your own choices. You will be happy to find, besides salsa, the best crossover music at your disposal for a taste of Latin-American music.

elegir por si mismos, el mas atractivo. Usted estará encantado de saber, que además de la salsa, puede encontrar la mejor música de fusión para que experimente gusto por la música latinoamericana.
You can see plenty of sensual salsa dancers during the dance performances in old inexpensive theatres. If you are more active, and it is your lucky Friday and Saturday night, you´ll find a high density of salsa nightclubs so that you understand that there are no Caleños without salsa, be it from very rich or poor areas, salsa is the language that moves them all. Bars are open till 2:30 but discos and nightclubs do not close until 4:30 or if you go with a local, you might stay there for a couple of hours more.

Salsa dancers dress quite lovely which might be a sight for your sore eyes, in fact, you will notice that women pay great attention to their looks and worry about their ways of dressing so being informal but well-dressed helps. Imagine the scene: attractive dancers as in an oasis in hot weather -not as much as the Caribbean coast but still.. . You might end up dancing with somebody else´s mum, mistaking her for a youngster, as some of the old ladies look quite young with their sport clothes, and what the heck, after some drinks, you will see everybody looking young and appealing.

Once the place starts filling itself up, you get in the mood, I am sure, you take to the dance floor by yourself. and hey, do not feel too apprehensive if you don´t know how to dance for there, you can take classes on the spot at any level from basic steps to the most difficult and acrobatic turns. The good news is, there is no shortage of salsa music there, so you are up for a great many hours of hips shaking. But if you are not into classes, just go to one of the salsa clubs and be very smiley, soon you will have a sultry dancer up for conversation or asking you to be their partner, if you are bold enough, that is.

Pero si no le interesa las clases, sólo vaya a uno de los clubes de salsa y luzca su mejor sonrisa, ESO SI, pronto un/a bailarin/a sensual le estará buscando conversación o pidiendole que sea su pareja de baile, así que si eres lo suficientemente valiente, dile que si.
And once you start moving, do not mind people´s laughter if you are not good enough as it is part of the entertainment, just, be ready to memorise the face of your dancing partner for there might be some changes of partners at some point in the dance floor.

Accommodation As for accommodation, if you are looking into cheap rooms in hostels, you might find $10 per night rooms, or you can find good hotels from $45US onwards, depending on what lifestyle you are used to. And guess what, most accommodation places offer one hour free so that you can try salsa
dancing, a great marketing idea, right? Well, be smart as them and use it; they encourage others to learn about their best export, salsa, so you encourage yourself to shake your hips nicely. The best bet is go to La Sexta, which is the city´s zona rosa and there you can find a plethora of places with different price choices.
En cuanto al alojamiento, si usted busca habitaciones baratas en albergues, es posible encontrar desde $10 por una habitación en la noche, o puede encontrar buenos hoteles a partir de $ 45US en adelante, dependiendo del estilo de vida al que está acostumbrado. Y adivinen qué, la mayoría de los lugares de alojamiento ofrecen una hora gratis para que puedan bailar salsa, lo que es una gran idea de publicidad, ¿no? Bueno, sea entonces inteligente como ellos y utilice el servicio; anime a otros a aprender a bailar lo que es su mejor exportación, la salsa, sacuda sus caderas bien. Insisto que lo mejor que puede hacer es ir a La Sexta, que es la zona rosa donde podrá encontrar una gran cantidad de lugares con diferentes opciones de precios.
Pricey? Nooooo And then if you find yourself short of money, you can then try to haggle... I have seen that happen even on buses so you might be surprised.
Y entonces, si usted se ve con poco dinero, puede tratar de regatear ... lo he visto incluso en los autobuses aunque pueda sorprender.
Food places As for food, the cheap snacks are a good bargain to hunt, the
pandebono and the
empanadas are a must and you can finish all up with a good
Cholado. Or there are also some good tapas that you find on the streets; as for popularity, many people talk about Baharoque, where I haven´t eaten yet, but they say that there you find good food at low prices.
En cuanto a la alimentación, se pueden encontrar cosas ligeras baratas, el pandebono y las empanadas son algo que se debe probar y se puede terminar todo con un buen Cholado. O también hay algunas tapas que se venden en las calles; de restaurantes populares, mucha gente habla de Baharoque, que no he visitado, pero se dice que allí hay buena comida a bajos precios.

CALI (Calidez) que se DA a todos los turistas A bit of history
Founded in 1536 by Sebastian de Belarcazar, the Spanish conqueror whose statue has become one of the emblematic sites in Cali. The statue overlooks the city with quite colourful views, specially in the evenings, when tourists gather and the lovely breeze whets their appetite. Luckily, on this lookout point of the city, you find local vendors there selling their snacks at accesible prices. You are to admire the past of the city visiting the historic churches and the Barrio San Antonio, which is great for a gathering with friends and lovely Costeñita beers.
Fundada en 1536 por Sebastián de Belarcázar, el conquistador español, cuya estatua se ha convertido en uno de los sitios emblemáticos de Cali. La estatua domina la ciudad, dándole al lugar una vista muy colorida, especialmente por las noches, cuando los turistas se reúnen y la brisa despierta sus apetitos. Por suerte, en este mirador, se encuentran los proveedores locales que venden sus productos a precios accesibles. También se puede admirar su pasado en las iglesias históricas y el Barrio San Antonio, que es ideal para encuentros con amigos mientras se sacia la sed con
una deliciosa cerveza Costeñita.
When to go? Any time is great and if it is for dancing, better the weekends, but now, if it is only one visit, make it on Dec 25th to 30th for a treat of salsa, that´s a great adventure. The Feria de Cali, to finish the year in a great way, dancing and watching parades of dances on the streets, a marvellous festival from 1957 onwards. And then, Cali is even more beautiful, I guess, during the December Salsa festival, you see, you can pity me down now.
Cualquier momento es genial y si es para bailar, mejor los fines de semana, pero si viene usted sólo por una visita, trate de hacerlo desde diciembre 25 a 30 para que se haga un regalo porque esa si que es una gran aventura. Vaya a la Feria de Cali, para finalizar el año en una gran forma, bailando y viendo los desfiles de comparsas de salsa en las calles, un festival maravilloso presente desde 1957. Y en este festival, Cali es aún más hermosa, supongo, si ven?, se pueden compadecerse de mí ahora.
