Friday, 2 April 2004 So this is it, I am finally here. I met some nice guy on the plane to Satiago and he gave me a ride to the city. I didn't know that Santiago is so far away from the acutal airport. The ride in the plane was pretty strange because it was the first time for me to go somewhere without any serious goal. Actually I felt pretty bad and the only thing I could think about was, what the hell am I doing here. Well, on some corner in the city center they let me out and I was on my own. Hit by a humongus jetlack and without any clue what to do, I took off. I checked into a nice Hostal, called Hostal Indiana which was really cool. Little rabbits ... read more

Greetings. Nothing really out of the ordinary for the last little bit. Started work at an English Language institute a few weeks ago, working with business professionals. Next Monday I start working at a private school, 3 days a week. www.colegiosdiaconales.cl I´ll be working here until the end of November. I´ll continue working for the institute the other 2 days to make some extra cash. Its good to hear that all the Canadian NHL teams will make the playoffs (assuming Edmonton can hold their ground). Whats crappy though, is that is unlikely that I´ll be able to watch any of them. If we are lucky I may be able to catch the odd game on ESPN espanol, but it wont be the leafs. Today is a huge day for soccer in Chile. They play Bolivia in ... read more

This is the trip report from my trip to Chile back in 2004, before I started blogging everything. Cliff Notes Chile is a country of spectacular scenery, friendly people and excellent food. My three weeks there were quite amazing, and I hope to go back. I will try to describe in words and pictures the adventure, but it really can’t be done. I expected Patagonia to look a lot like Alaska. Simply stated, I was correct. However, when I was taking in my surroundings I never thought: “yeah this looks like Alaska”. One main difference is the number of fjords in Chile—many more than I saw in Alaska. Other than that the differences are almost too subtle to explain. So you should go to both and compare. Chile does have an abundance of wildlife, mostly birds. ... read more

Hola Amigos Here's the next update: If you are into mullets, you´d love it down here - i´d say at least 30% of the population has a mullet - and half of them are really greasy. The 30% doesn´t include the 10% who have rat-tails. Yes, rat tails. I thought they disappeared in the 80´s, but not here. I´ve even seen a few people with multiple rat-tails. Come to think of it, there entire culture is stuck in the 80´s. I´ve heard more Michael Jackson in the past 3 weeks than I have in my entire life. Other popular groups include: Culture Club, Elvis, Bon Jovi, Cyndi Lauper, Queen, old school Madonna. 80´s music blares on the buses, the bars, the dance clubs, just about everywhere. I found an apartment yesterday. There was a teacher at ... read more

Hola! Here's my second update. I'll start it off with what everyone calls me... 'Gringo' Gringo means foreigner here in Chile. The word originated in Mexico, meaning Greens go home - green referring to the US Dollar. So basically everyone from Europe or North America is considered a Gringo. Everyone knows I am a gringo as my complexion is very different - not many people have blond hair and blue eyes here, so its a dead giveaway. Last weekend was a lot of fun. Friday night I went over to Pato's friends house (Pato is the 36 year old who lives at my house). There was another Gringo there, so he acted as the translator. After the house party we all went to a Karaoke bar. We got home at 5:30 am! Saturday me and a ... read more

Hola, I arrived in Santiago 4 days ago. When I got to my host families house I quickly realized that the lady did not speak ANY English. I had no idea what she was saying. Later I found out that they weren't expecting me until the 6th of January! The lady seemed Ok with it though. The house is small, but fairly modern. All the houses are gated and locked. The windows all have bars on them, and every house has a security system. The area I am in (Vitacura) is very nice and appears to be safe. I have been told it is one of the wealthiest communities in Santiago. The language barrier is a problem, but i am finding that my Spanish is quickly improving, and I can now sometimes understand the lady. Its ... read more

Arriving just after noon time at San Pedro de Atacama in the north of Chile, went through customs and immigration at the town itself, the customs guy upon seeing my passport told me he has lots of Filipino friends and that there are many Pinoys in Chile, did not really meet anyone my whole time there but it's a long country(geographically speaking). we were all put into a room, lined us up and have us put our backpacks on the table and they did a quick search, asking questions if we brought drugs, meat, fruits etc. It was done in 3 mins. we were dropped off in the center of town, it was unpaved roads and it's very dusty and dry, we decided to leave our packs at the bus company office while we search for ... read more

I was looking forward to a change in travel destinations, to new experiences and new horizons. It was time to get out and explore a different culture, and a different language. Suddenly everyone was talking about South America as the place to be, and who am I to argue with the collective wisdom of my esteemed fellow travellers. So I was excited to board a flight from Sydney to Santiago; with Chile the first destination on my inaugural visit to South America. A Sydney couple who are great friends from home were winding up their Latino trip as mine began, so when my flight arrived I caught a bus to the hotel to greet them in downtown Santiago. When I went inside I was very impressed to see my mate talking to the staff in spanish, ... read more

San Pedro de Atacama (San Pedro for short) is a small village located in one of the many oases which are founded in the altiplano of the second region of Chile. Along this geographic zone rise some of the highest volcanoes of the Los Andes cordillera. Formerly the center of the Atacama culture, nowadays this small town has a big importance and it is considered as the archeological capital of Chile. But it is important also because of its extreme geographic position, the beauty of the landscape and its eternal blue sky. Due to the amazing landscape of this zone, San Pedro has turned into the start point of the touristic activity and the excursions around the region. Here you can find a big variety of services for the visitors such as lodging, restaurants, tourist ... read more
