Port 5: Sunday 29th. January: Easter Island:it was a rough sea with 1 1/2 to 2 meter swell that made it difficult for the tenders to come alongside the ship though we did make it to shore and onto our tour which took us up to the volcano crater with magnificent views around and then on to the Moai statues. Places we visited were Orongo, Rano Kau, Ahu a Kavi. We walked through the markets and mingled with the locals before heading back to the ship on a very rough sea. We had hamburgers on the balcony as we sailed away from Easter Island.
Port 6: Friday 3rd. February: Valparaiso, Chile: An early rise to watch as we cruised into the busy port of Valparaiso where we later had a shuttle through to the terminal to board our tour coach. we drove through the town stopping at a the Plaza Sotomayor and the monument of the Heroes of Iquique. From there we went up a hill and walked past many different styles and painted houses (some Victorian) and the Maritime Museum to Paseo 21 de Mayo for views over the city and harbour. A quick visit to the Fonck Museum
and onto Vina Del Mar past smart hotels, restaurants and beaches. After lunch Vera and I strolled along the promenade to view the many seals swimming or basking close by.
Port 7: Sunday 5th. February: Chile, Puerto Mont: Ashore today by tender for our tour to Puerto Varas on the most beautiful Lake Llanquihue with snow topped Volcan Osorno gleaming in brilliant sunshine. Driving on to a funda Olgita ranch for a show of Chilean horses, rodeo, traditional dancing and lunch including Pisco.
Port 8: Monday 6th. February: Chile, Chacabuco: By tender again to our coach for a tour through some lovely Patagonian countryside along the Simpson River to the Rio Simpson National Reserve named for Captain Simpson. Puerto Chacabuco is a town in Patagonia, southern Chile, known as a jumping-off point for the Aysén fjords (Google maps)
Wednesday 8th. February: Chile, Amalia Glacier and Fjord cruising: We were up very early this morning and wrapped up to keep warm as we cruised up to and stopped by the Amalia Glacier. Coming from a hot sunburnt country of Western Australia - it is really something to see glaciers and experience the cold and wilderness of a place
like this. Silence is a great option so after taking photos and videos from the top deck we retired to our balcony to absorb the atmosphere. Superb.
Port 9: Thursday 9th. February: Chile, Puntarenas: Arrived early and anchored off shore so in by tender this time on a calm sea. We had time to walk around town to the markets and town square before our tour with a visit to an amazing spot - the Museum of Memories - an outdoor museum with all the machinery and artifacts of antiquity being donated by members of the early pioneer families. it is one of the best museums I have visited. We then went to the Municipal Cemetery of Sara Braun- very different to those in Australia - this one having tombs and mausoleums in manicured grounds of Italian cypress trees. To another museum and up to a viewing spot at Mirador Cerra de la Cruz with fabulous view over town and harbour.
